Does anybody actually sleep the full night through?

Every night I wake up multiple times, so I feel knackered every single morning and I don't know much that I can change to stop this from happening.

I'm pregnant at the minute (17 weeks) and I'm waking up for a wee about 5 times during the night. I've decided that I need to reduce my fluid intake significantly at night as a solution to that. But even before I was pregnant I was still waking for apparently no reason.

Do I just need to accept that I'm not ever going to be one of those people that can have a full nights sleep?

I would if DS didn't wake me up once per night for absolutely no reason whatsoever. But then I'm not sure what difference it makes because I'm always tired. The other night I slept for nearly 12 hours and still needed an afternoon nap.

It's totally normal to rouse more than once during each night. Everyone has sleep cycle periods of deeper and lighter sleep and during the lighter times your body will subcobsciously do a quick self-check of are you too cold, too hot, are there any noises or other evidence that there might be danger nearby, and do you need the loo. If the answer is yes to any of these you may wake up briefly enough to resolve the issue and for most people the waking is so brief that they have no memory of having woken just long enough to steal all the duvet/kick off the covers/stumble to the bathroom. Those of us with insomnia are waking more fully and for longer, and forming more memories. Part of living well with insomnia is learning how to incorporate a brief wake into your sleep expectations and not get stressed by it but have a plan for how to move smoothly back towards a sleepy state of mind.

Always. I'm asleep as soon as my head touches the pillow and I wake just before the alarm 8 hours later. The only exception might be mid summer when the daylight wakes me earlier. I feel I've had a horrible night if I get disturbed at all, but even then I'll go straight back to sleep. I don't know how people who don't sleep well get through the day 😪

Never ever have done. Always woken up, a few times, now I get up for the loo at least one of those times. I average 5-6 hours sleep a night.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/09/2023 15:20

Rarely. Usually get woken up by the cat wanting a cuddle.

Dentistlakes · 25/09/2023 15:22

Since having kids I’ve never slept through. i always wake up at least twice. It’s a pita.

TheLurpackYears · 25/09/2023 16:09

Oh god yeah, if nobody wakes me up I definitely can. But they all wake me up. It was a bit dicey for a while untill vaginal atrophy was sorted, but fine now.

SoRainbowRhythms · 25/09/2023 16:10

I genuinely can't remember the last time I slept through the night. And I don't have pregnancy or kids to blame it on 😴😴

Abeli · 25/09/2023 16:12

Never since my first pregnancy in 1995.
I have learned to go for a wee with my eyes half closed.

ActDottie · 25/09/2023 16:15

I didn’t wake up during the night until I was pregnant! So pregnancy definitely plays a part.

MsFannySqueers · 25/09/2023 16:19

I have had terrible trouble sleeping right from childhood. I used to sleep walk and have night terrors. I have only once as an adult gone a whole night without waking. About 20 years ago I was on holiday on the Isle of Arran. I don’t know if that had anything to do with it😂. I woke up the following morning feeling absolutely fantastic. I realised that this is what people who sleep well must feel like every day! Unfortunately it has never happened again.

blueshoes · 25/09/2023 16:24

If I am tired (as in sleep deprived), I will sleep through. But even if I wake up a few times a night (like when my dcs woke me up every hour to breastfeed in bed!), I should still be alright in the morning. Last night I only managed to fall asleep at 4 am and woke up at 10 am and am fine.

I can sleep through noise, any manner of mattress or even mat and lighting.

Sleep is my super power.

OooohAhhhh · 25/09/2023 16:29

Do I balls.
I have a 11 month old that wakes for feeds in the night still.
Oh how lovely it would be tho!

Olika · 25/09/2023 16:34

I haven't slept full night since I got pregnant in August 2021.

Wotrewelookinat · 25/09/2023 16:50

Always used to sleep a full night before children. Then did again when children slept through. Now it’s all ruined by the peri-menopause 😡. If you Google ‘sleep hygiene’ there’s lots you can do to help…mediation, dim lighting, no digital devices an hour or too before bed, no caffeine after midday, getting outdoors every day. Dr Rangan Chatterjee is a good source of information.

Favouritefruits · 25/09/2023 16:56

Sorry to say I’ve not had a full nights sleep in 9 years, not since I was pregnant with my first!

Bloop1986 · 25/09/2023 17:20

If you suspect gestational diabetes i would recommend saying it to one of your medical team because i was diagnosed at 18 wks with GD and it made all the difference (especially considering i also had hyperemesis gravidarum)

MrsMitford3 · 25/09/2023 17:32

I never sleep through-it's very depressing. My DC are in their 20's now so you'd think I'd sleep better but am post menopausal and just so restless and worrying about sleeping makes me not be able to sleep!

My fluid intake doesn't seem to matter -I often get up 3 times for a wee-the problem is I am a light sleeper and as soon as I wake I think I need the loo.

I am working on all the good habits-fresh air, long dog walk, lots of steps, no caffeine after morning coffee.
I do fail at the screen time as I do watch relaxing things to sleep-like Downton Abbey Season One episode Two! It never fails!!

Noseyoldcow · 25/09/2023 18:43

I don't so much sleep as go into a coma. I can sleep through all kinds of noise, thunderstorms etc. Fortunately for my kids, they had voices like foghorns which did (eventually) stir me. But ever since my first pregnancy over 40 years ago, I need to get up for a wee. That side of things is getting worse, these days it's at least 2 or three times a night. But pretty much as soon as my head hits the pillow again, I'm out like a light. Feel free to hate me as much as you like......

UsingChangeofName · 25/09/2023 18:56

Yes, I do.

I mean, I am a late to bed , late to rise sort of a person, but always sleep through until my alarm wakes me - even if I set the alarm for a couple of hours later than my usual wake up time.

Oh, I tell a lie. I also get woken up by the bin men that collect the recycling having a party outside my house between about 5.40 and 6.10 once a fortnight. Angry

WeightoftheWorld · 25/09/2023 18:58

No, I almost all wake multiples time. This has been the case my whole life to some extent but definitely worse since I became a mum.

TribeD · 25/09/2023 19:01

I wish...I am constantly knackered because of long covid and menopause. I always feel like I could fall asleep, but when I do go to bed, it takes me around an hour to drop off.

I wake up two or three times a night, but on the odd occasion I take a sleeping tablet like Nytol I feel bloody awful the next day.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 25/09/2023 19:02

Yes, but only recently since twatty neighbours decided to move out. Fingers are crossed it’s a permanent move.
