To be annoyed at DS?

Hey all,

Am I being reasonable to be annoyed / wound up at DS(14) - since last week, he's decided that he no longer likes wearing socks - and has been going without (apart from to school where i've been insisting).

DS is a bit of a sneaker head - and we bought a few pairs for his birthday (including some Vans and nikes dunks) - he's been wearing these without socks as he says he finds them more comfortable and prefers the way it looks (with his ankles out)

Am I right to be annoyed - socks were always mandatory when I was younger and is good for hygiene? Is this some kind of new trend / style?

I don't know if you've ever heard the phrase 'pick your battles', but this is exactly the scenario it was made for.

If he wants his ankles out, buy him some trainer socks and see if they're more popular.

Bagheerabaloo · 24/09/2023 23:50

Not sure it's something I'd be annoyed at him for but his trainers are going to end up stinking!

GladTidy20 · 25/09/2023 06:50

@NuffSaidSam he's already got some trainer socks - he said he's not a fan as they can still be seen above his trainers which 'ruins the looks' according to ds

Apparently one of his friends is doing something similar too? is it a new trend?

You can get socks even smaller than trainer socks!

MidnightOnceMore · 25/09/2023 06:58

I'd buy some cheap thin inner soles you can wash/swap so his shoes don't go so smelly.

I wouldn't be annoyed about this. I'd tell him if he wants to go sockless he'll have to accept the smell and if he wants to replace shoes more oftenas a result he'll have to help pay for that.

socks were always mandatory when I was younger Was your upbringing quite strict?

1099 · 25/09/2023 07:03

I'd just get him some spray for the trainers when he takes them off, sell the idea to him that nice smelling feet is a thing nowadays.

NerrSnerr · 25/09/2023 07:06

At 14 just let him get on with it. Maybe buy dive spray/ powder or something for stinky shoes.

SanFranciscoCalling · 25/09/2023 07:06

Honestly, let him get on with it. Buy him some insoles/spray and then leave him be. It's obviously fashionable for him and his friends, absolutely nothing to be annoyed about. At 14 he has many many years ahead of him for making fashion choices you aren't going to like!

Changingplace · 25/09/2023 07:06

You can get socks that are lower than trainer socks that can’t be seen, bought some in Tescos yesterday.

But overall I’d pick your battles, it’s not really that big a deal.

TeddyBeans · 25/09/2023 07:06

I have some absolutely tiny socks to wear with my slip on shoes, none of which would be visible inside a trainer. Socks were mandatory for me growing up as well but I could never get trainer socks to stay on my feet! These little socks have silicone grips on the heels which help a lot.

Doesn't wearing shoes with no socks just create extra stinky shoes?

WombatSocks · 25/09/2023 07:07

I actually hate socks.
I can't bear the feeling of them so I probably haven't worn them for over 20 years.
I just wash my feet and deodorise my walking boots and occasionally my trainers all my other shoes are fine.

Donotshushme · 25/09/2023 07:08

Why the fuck do you even care?

PerfectMatch · 25/09/2023 07:08

Honestly this isn't a big deal OP compared to what some 14 years olds are doing!

southernlife55 · 25/09/2023 07:09

Surely this isn't real? Your 14 year must be an absolute angel if you're worried about him wearing socks. I genuinely couldn't care less.

Lana12345 · 25/09/2023 07:10

My step son doubles down his socks so you can’t see them.

but I’d just leave him to it and he’ll have to accept his shoes will stink quicker unless he sprays etc to make sure they don’t smell too bad

koalaknickers · 25/09/2023 07:14

AT 14, he's old enough to have some autonomy over what he wears or doesn't wear.

If his trainers end up smelling, his peers will soon let him know (if he doesn't notice first) and he'll then find out what he needs to do to prevent that.

It would be a good learning experience for him. That's how people grow and become independent.

Blinkinbloodyhayfever · 25/09/2023 07:15

I wear my sketcher pumps without socks and the dc have Nikes that are worn with socks but get grubby. I just bung them in the washing machine on a 30c delicates wash.

Brefugee · 25/09/2023 07:33

Put washable inserts in and let him get on with it

autumnmakesmehappy · 25/09/2023 07:35

I'm sorry OP but if this is the worst thing your teenage son is doing to annoy you then you are one very, very lucky parent

Babygirl888 · 25/09/2023 07:44

Get him no show socks. Some of them sre in that tights material and dont feel like you're wearing anything and they def dont show

AuntieDolly · 25/09/2023 07:45

Leave him be! His feet, his trainers. Why on earth does it matter to you?

fernsandlilies · 25/09/2023 08:00

Get him invisible socks from ASOS, they are cut lower than trainer socks

romdowa · 25/09/2023 08:10

Do these actually stay on people's feet? I've tried these a few times and after a couple of steps they just slip down

margotrose · 25/09/2023 08:13

Invisible socks don't work for me - they don't stay on my feet long enough to even put my shoes on, let alone walk!

BarbedButterfly · 25/09/2023 08:13

I don't wear socks at all as I hate how they feel. I can't see the problem. It's up to him out of school.
