Could you do this at 50+ ?

Made a complete fool of myself trying to climb up on a inflatable like this and failed miserably and repeatedly despite trying from all sides.
What could I do to improve my fitness to succeed ?
Legs were like jelly and I just slipped and fell.
I'm a active person, play sport , spin and do yoga ..not light and lean but relatively strong.
My kids hopped up like mountain goats 🐐

There's little hand hold bits?
I like to think I could do it.

Freddiefox · 24/09/2023 19:50

Those things are really hard , you slip and slide and the jackets are cumbersome. I couldn’t do it , didn’t have the grip or strength in arms and legs

GreyBlackBay · 24/09/2023 19:53

You sound really fit, can't imagine why you couldn't do it. Try to analyse what happened and that'll tell you what to work on.

My grip and arm strength has gone completely but legs are still good. Think I could get up the sloped side.

Milksheikha · 24/09/2023 19:55

It was bloody slippery as well as being very hot underfoot. The hand hold bit were also where you had to put your feet. I managed to get almost to the top and the fall was horrible.

Probably not without pissing myself.

MartyFunkhouser · 24/09/2023 19:57

You sound fit and strong. Lose the excess weight. It’s hard to pull yourself up if you’re heavy.

vipersnest1 · 24/09/2023 19:59

Bloody hell, @MartyFunkhouser! Where did OP say she is overweight? 👀

pompomdaisy · 24/09/2023 20:02

Nope no way. I tried paddle boarding and my core was jelly.

windysocks · 24/09/2023 20:10

I did this a couple of weeks ago - in a wetsuit with knee grips which was the only way I could get out of the water - I nearly dislocated my elbow and it was a real wake up call about how weak I have become possibly due to age and menopause. I have been thinking of what tondi about it ever since !

I did this aswell and realised I didn't have a core ! What have I become ?

Justcallmebebes · 24/09/2023 20:16

Yes, late 50's and I can do this but I work out a lot, play a lot of sports still and always have. I can climb, swim and run better than my GC's

I should add I'm 50

cptartapp · 24/09/2023 20:28

I'm almost 52 and tried to do this two years ago on holiday. Not a chance. I nearly put my hip out. Still a family joke.

Ooh meow, what a twatty thing to say.

mirenableeding · 24/09/2023 21:28

I had a go on an inflatable obstacle course with my kids last year and ended up mainly I. The water swimming after them no was so embarrassed that I had no arm strength to pull up. I had dislocated and broken my shoulder 2 years prior but still. I felt pitiful - and was scared to jump on off the jetty when we first went in too. I didn't like how I felt but ultimately enjoyed it. DH wouldn't countenance getting in so I was top mum anyway

hidinginthegarden · 25/09/2023 07:41

If it's any consolation I tried this with my kids a couple of years ago (when I was 50). Not on this but on the stepping stones thing I couldn't balance, tripped, flew through the sky, battered my face and fell in.
They had to send the lifeguards to get me out! Ended up with a black eye and blood running down my face. The kids were dying of embarrassment.
The mind was willing but the body not so much. Blush

lljkk · 25/09/2023 07:48

I wasn't keen climbing down these 8' tall groynes yesterday at Cromer (DS got down easily), but ascending the inflatable looks fine. I don't have the upper body strength to climb down the groynes very safely.

DotStripe · 25/09/2023 08:12

I think it's about technique as much as about strength and fitness. If you're trying to do it in front of other people perhaps you got a bit flustered and weren't thinking properly about how to do it. I'm younger than you but occasionally have to haul my 1yo up an indoor thing like this and you do have to put your weight a certain way, make use of all the different bits to get yourself up...definitely the kind of thing I'd fail at with any kind of audience!

Edit: contrary to how the woman in the pic is doing it it's much easier if you turn your body and feet sideways and hug the wall as much as you can. Kids have more freedom to not do this as they're lighter and more agile!

This made me PSML

Chiaseedling · 25/09/2023 08:26

Absolutely not!! I have no core or arm strength!!

Fifthtimelucky · 25/09/2023 12:24

I'm early 60s and reckon that I could do the side with the handholds in the first picture, and the side with the rope in the second picture. It would depend how slippery it was though.

I doubt very much if I could do the front bit in the second picture though.

floppybit · 25/09/2023 12:27

You sound fit as a fiddle, but a lot of your exercise is cardio, if you lifted some weights that would probably help

lemmein · 25/09/2023 12:29

Wouldn't even attempt to.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/09/2023 12:31

Yes. Scrambled about soft play with little grandson a few weeks ago (nearly 60).
Can’t honestly say it would be my activity of choice, though!

Strugglingtodomybest · 25/09/2023 12:32

The last time that i attempted one of those water park obstacle courses was when I was on holiday when i was 47. I also consider myself to be fit but I found it really hard due to the slipperiness and the constantly having to haul myself back out of the water. I was like jelly afterwards too! DS made me go on it twice in one week 😭
