Could you do this at 50+ ?

Made a complete fool of myself trying to climb up on a inflatable like this and failed miserably and repeatedly despite trying from all sides.
What could I do to improve my fitness to succeed ?
Legs were like jelly and I just slipped and fell.
I'm a active person, play sport , spin and do yoga ..not light and lean but relatively strong.
My kids hopped up like mountain goats 🐐

Hahaha!! I'm 52 and managed to fall over my own feet in a supermarket yesterday - for the second time in a week 😆

So in answer to your question - not a chance!

BellaAndDave · 25/09/2023 12:40

I did! Don’t get too excited though, DH was shoving my arse from the back and DS was pulling the rope from the top 😂. It was so slippery!

CharlotteBog · 25/09/2023 13:02

I like to think I could at 52 (53 tomorrow!).
I am lean and muscular (run, swim, bike, weights).
To date I am the only person in my household who has been in the loft, as it has no ladder and involves standing on a chair and hoisting myself up.
Tbf I think both my sons could do so now - maybe I'll ask one of them to get the Xmas decs down in December!
I'd love to have a go at the inflatables!

Fifiellz · 25/09/2023 13:58

I'm 48 and on holiday this year found I cannot haul myself up and out of the pool anymore. Had to use the steps or get DD to hoist myself up.

I def couldn't have done that inflatable.

But of a wake up call as to how fat and unfit I am going into middle age and need to make changes now.

Milksheikha · 26/09/2023 04:29

I'm definitely going to make changes. I don't mind looking old but don't want to feel old and not do things because of physical challenges . Scared I'll get injured was probably my mental block on the inflatable.

Go you OP! I'm 48 and would give it a shot, then likely disgrace myself in a tremendous way.

I'm all enthusiasm, no skill 😂But am good for spectator value.

SueDonnym · 26/09/2023 05:36

Maybe in 10 years time when you are lifting and carrying grandchildren regularly you’ll be able to do it.

floofbag · 26/09/2023 06:08

Yep , there was a video on fb recently of two women around 50 who couldn't get off a giant deck chair . Every body was laughing , I found it really sad ..

I'm afraid of old age and want to be fit and healthy . I'd be embarrassed if ( obvs disability aside ) I couldn't get up that !

MsFrost · 26/09/2023 06:33

Don't forget kids are small and so it's much easier for them to balance and throw themselves around - and they spend half their lives on climbing frames etc! You can't compare your agility at 50 to that of a child.

I'm mid 30's and think I would struggle with it. Even though I do strength training twice a week, I don't think I've developed enough core strength yet for something like this. Tbh I probably wouldn't attempt it and would just be paddling around in the water!

I also think it's harder than it looks on first glance, as you have to remember it's slippery and steep and you're having to move your hand away as your foot comes up, so you need balance too. Is the thing wobbling around a bit in the water too? I imagine that would make it harder!

SummerLightning · 26/09/2023 06:46

I've done one of these, I did get up but remember it being hard, I think there was only a rope side and a vertical side like the man is on. I rocked up with great confidence and tried the vertical.side and couldn't even get out of the water! I was only 45 ish at the time though. I remember lots of people sliding down and failing (me and some kids included!)
I do some climbing (badly) and that might help. Definitely partly a confidence/technique thing

hidinginthegarden · 25/09/2023 07:41

If it's any consolation I tried this with my kids a couple of years ago (when I was 50). Not on this but on the stepping stones thing I couldn't balance, tripped, flew through the sky, battered my face and fell in.
They had to send the lifeguards to get me out! Ended up with a black eye and blood running down my face. The kids were dying of embarrassment.
The mind was willing but the body not so much. Blush

Christ!!

You're all very brave just having a go! It sounds hideous and I think I would completely wimp out and stuff what anyone else thinks about it. Grin

hotdog74 · 26/09/2023 06:59

Did you have bare feet? These things are much easier with a pair of grippy socks so you don't slip so much (and is therefore much safer!)

littleblackcat27 · 26/09/2023 07:04

@floofbag

Send us the video when you scoot yourself up there as you think it's dead easy!! And I disagree that anyone needs to feel embarrassed for having a go.

Maybe the 50 year old plus people were having fun and a laugh?

FrenchandSaunders · 26/09/2023 07:04

I like to think I could but in reality I would prob struggle a bit. I’m 55. Go to the gym, weights, classes but about 1.5 stone overweight.

I recently tried paddle boarding on holiday. It’s hard! Took me ages to get from all fours to upright with a lot of encouragement from adult DD …. then I got a round of applause from the beach 😳🤣. I’d never have done it if I knew I was being watched like that.

MiniCooperLover · 26/09/2023 07:08

We went on holiday and tried a big water park like this, I was so excited to do it .., lasted all of 5 minutes and left the 12 year old to scoot off followed by DH desperately trying to keep up. I couldn't cope with the bulkiness of the life jacket they insisted people wear and just kept thinking don't fall don't fall ... felt rather pathetic I'll admit. Am 50.

ssd · 26/09/2023 07:15

I'm later 50s and looked at that and thought what fun, I'd love to have a go, the reality would be i'd slip on my arse at the start and not get on with it too well. And all that water would make me wee myself.

floofbag · 26/09/2023 07:54

@littleblackcat27 I said I would be embarrassed not anyone else .
I know I could do it because I look after myself and keep my weight down which is 100% a choice .

DreamItDoIt · 26/09/2023 07:58

I couldn't do that, those things fill me with fear. Whilst I am strong I am carrying too much weight. When you see kids doing it, it's the overweight ones that can't.
