Why on earth was I so drunk last night?

LaDamaDeElche · 24/09/2023 10:39

I went out to celebrate my birthday last night and drank what would normally be not too much alcohol to be really drunk and I was absolutely smashed! DP is angry with me for being annoying and super drunk. I had two small glasses of wine with a big dinner and lots of water too, then afterwards over a period of around 3/4 hours I had a gin and tonic, a glass of cava and a champagne cocktail. I've woken up with the worst hangover I've had for years, had a complete blackout of the end of the night and am in the doghouse for god knows what. Has this ever happened to anyone else? I've just hit 45, so is this my body telling me I just can't drink any more. I'm about to come on my period, so I don't know if this is something that would affect tolerance. I've never had a massive tolerance for alcohol as I'm quite small and slim, so am generally careful to stay within my limits these days. I was ok at the bar, but just lost the plot on the way home in the car 😟

This has happened to me before when I had not long begun a new diet. The carb heavy food we had combined with alcohol (in line/less than I would usually have), had me passed out and ill. Thankfully just with friends but I was so so poorly and don't remember much

Tonight1 · 24/09/2023 10:48

It can hit you differently at times.

Apologise to DP but it isn't that big a deal :)

pizzaHeart · 24/09/2023 10:55

It would be a mixture of different things for me. I don’t cope well with it, especially with gin and tonic in the mix. I can’t do even Prosecco and wine at the same day.
I’ve also read that the component in tonic water often triggers migraine for some people and sweeteners can do this too. I’ve noticed the difference myself how I feel depending on which tonic water I’ve used.

I haven't drunk g&t for ages, so that could be it.

I think being due on your period seems to make us more susceptible to getting drunk

Wishitsnows · 24/09/2023 11:01

Well your DP is very lucky he doesn’t have to worry about hormone fluctuations

I'll be careful around my period in future! I feel absolutely terrible, like I was doing shots or something!

I haven't drunk g&t for ages, so that could be it.

I also noticed that i became not good with white wine with age (mine not wine’s) I always liked it in my young years but now moved on red.
And don’t even start me on the topic what did they put into a cocktail!

BoatsAndHoes · 24/09/2023 11:18

Is it possible your drink could have been spiked...? Unlikely if you'd been with your partner all evening, but maybe?

blackpinkinyourarea · 24/09/2023 11:23

I agree this sounds like one of your last drinks could have been spiked?

OnAFrolicOfMyOwn · 24/09/2023 11:23

In middle age, it seems almost to be random how drunk you get and what level of hangover you have (leaving aside extreme drinking). I suppose there are numerous physiological factors in play and, the older you get, the less natural resistance you have.

DelphiniumBlue · 24/09/2023 11:24

All of the above, but also did the champagne cocktail include other alcohol? Lots of cocktails contain 3 or more measures of alcohol so can take you a bit by surprise.
Ive found my alcohol tolerance has dramatically decreased- I used to easily be able to sink a bottle or more of wine over an evening with little ill effect, but these days 2 glasses will send me to sleep!

Bouncyball23 · 24/09/2023 11:28

I used to find am ok and don't feel drunk inside but once I get outside into the fresh air it hits me I go from being fine to drunk in seconds I no longer drink tho.

rcat74 · 24/09/2023 11:29

I think it was probably mixing. There is brandy in a champagne cocktail. They are very strong but yes, my age has massively affected my tolerance to the point that now at 48 I get a racing heart after a couple of drinks.

PuppyMonkey · 24/09/2023 11:48

Never mix, never worry. Particularly a mix involving champagne - which for some reason can go horribly wrong ime.

anyadvicefor · 24/09/2023 11:49

Mixing, never ends well

Definitely not, unless by the bar staff, which is very unlikely as I’ve been to that place before many times.

Could be this. I usually only drink red wine, so maybe my tolerance for everything else is shot. Probably mixing isn’t a good idea these days, although I drank cocktails on holiday in the summer and was fine. Many more than I did last night. Perhaps it’s a mix of age, g&t and hormones!!

I’m normally ok with wine and cocktails. The only thing I did different this time was the g&t.

NunsKnickers · 24/09/2023 11:58

My alcohol tolerance has definitely changed with age. I would be wasted if I drank what you had these days.

Hope you're feeling OK. Hangovers are just awful and your partner being cross is probably not helping.

Yes probably this combination!
Although DH should give it a rest- one drunken night to celebrate your birthday doesnt justify anger/sulking

PixiePirate · 24/09/2023 11:59

I’ve experienced that a couple of times before too and there seemed to be no rhyme nor reason. Hope you soon feel back to normal.

What did you do when drunk for your husband to be so upset? If there’s nothing specific and no big back story, then perhaps he just needs to wind his neck in!

Could have been the brandy. I drank them on holiday in the summer, but possibly they were stronger at this place than where I had them on holiday.

I thought I'd been rude or something, but apparently was just annoying and kept bothering him when he was trying to sleep, which is irritating. He's not British, so probably approaches the whole drinking thing from a different angle. He's Spanish and they don't tend to drink a lot or ever get out of control when they do. He also comes from a family who barely drink, so annoying drunk behaviour that would be something a British couple would probably laugh about the next day is a bigger deal to him. He's not raging or anything, just a bit irritated.
