What are these tweezers for?

Looking through a late family member's things and came across these tweezers. Never seen tweezers like them before and am wondering what the purposes are of the holes in the tip and the grooves. They are 11.5cm long and the tip is 1cm long. Any ideas?

Are they maybe for removing bones from fish?

C1N1C · 24/09/2023 10:01

Pure guess... I'd guess sewing tweezers. There's a groove down the middle and a hole, so maybe for holding the eye of the needle flat, making it easier to guide thread?

Modeling. Dh used to do it and has all manner of weird looking tweezers and sticks.

That should have said modelling? I don't know for certain!

WildCherryBlossom · 24/09/2023 10:11

Do you mean model making?

WildCherryBlossom · 24/09/2023 10:11

Or fashion modelling 😂

I do hope someone recognises them. The person they belonged to worked in demolition for a while and had a treasure trove of stuff he'd collected, so I'm guessing that's how he came to have the tweezers, but wondering what they're for is driving me mad.

The groove and the hole are interesting aren't they. I've never come across anything like that for sewing, although I wouldn't rule that out. How about fishing? Somehow could that hole be used for threading fishing tackle?

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 24/09/2023 10:23

@WildCherryBlossom that's an interesting idea. I know nothing about fishing, though.

Me neither. I just googled tweezers with a hole and found this

Hmm, 'tweezers threading fishing tackle' doesn't bring up tweezers like the above. Back to the drawing board.

Not quite the same though

Eek!

I did the same and there are a lot of weird and wonderful tweezers out there, some with holes in the tip, but none quite like the ones I've got here.

Those are Hunters splinter forceps, we use them (urgent care/A&E) to remove splinters and other things stuck in small places which shouldn't be where they are.

WildCherryBlossom · 24/09/2023 10:29

Ooooh!

Thank you, that's fascinating.

Ooh cross post

WildCherryBlossom · 24/09/2023 10:32

Now I want some in my medicine cabinet @ChocHotolate

INeedAnotherName · 24/09/2023 13:23

I'm always getting splinters...maybe I should get some 😯

@ChocHotolate why are these better than normal ones?

ChocHotolate · 24/09/2023 13:38

I actually have no idea what the holes are for, despite using them for years I have never wondered about them.
They're good because they're sharp and pointy and (in hospital) sterile. They're not necessary better than a decent pair of home tweezers but they're what is provided here so that's what I use

Thanks, ChocHotolate. I do get splinters from the work I do, so they may be come in handy. They'll go in the first aid kit.

When I came across the tweezers, the first thing that came to mind was 'What is the purpose of those holes?'. Are you also wondering that now?

OP posts:
INeedAnotherName · 24/09/2023 13:59

Perhaps the pointy part is to get to the splinter without damaging the wound too much if it's in deep and the hole is for the blood, pus and other liquids to get out of the way so the grip on the splinter is better?

Idk but it is interesting.
