Dentures/crap teeth.

No idea where this should go so I'm posting here for traffic.

Does anyone on here have truly awful teeth? As is falling apart, breaking, lots of fillings etc.. I'm 44 and my teeth had a shit start in life, didn't get taken to the dentist regularly and then once I hit 16 and had to pay I didn't get taken at all and I couldn't afford it. Ended up having two teeth removed when my aunt took pity on me and stuck the cost on her credit card.

I had a tooth break last week and a temporary filling put on so I need to go back next week but I'm just sitting here and thought a different tooth felt odd and that's broken as well.. So I now have one on the left and one on the right broken, the one on the left already has a root canal.

So to get to the point would dentures at the age of 44 be an awful idea? My husband thinks it would be terrible 🤣 I don't have thousands of pounds to get them sorted but I'm so genuinely fed up of constant horrible, weak teeth and pain.

I have a partial denture, I had to have 5 teeth removed from front top due to a tumour. I've had 5 surgeries now in 18 months for removal, bone grafting etc.

What I will say is, if there is any way to save your existing teeth please consider that first.

I loathe my plate. I am still in the process of having implants but I can say that I could not live the rest of my days wearing this plate. It is not comfortable, I am limited to what I can eat, I need to have it adjusted often. Your mouth changes so it's not a case of here's your denture, and off you go. It's something that needs to be checked and adjusted regularly. And lets not even go there about how it's affected my self confidence. I am single and there is no way I would even consider letting someone in close enough to see me without my plate. Keep in mind as soon as a tooth is removed, bone loss occurs. If you decide years down the line that you may now want an implant, chances are you won't have enough natural bone to hold an implant.

There are so many cosmetic options now. If you are honestly considering removing all of your teeth (which is how I understood it) please think some more about it.

I second this, i had 2 teeth removed and have a partial denture, not even a massive plate . It looks perfect but i had the whole thing, it destroyed me mentally, i never want to go out fof a meal as the food doesn't taste the same. I had no choice but had to have them removed, but if you can somehow save your teeth do it.
Mine was fitted a week after the surgery.

Lovemusic82 · 22/09/2023 21:38

My teeth are pretty bad, I have had a lot of extractions but not been offered dentures (I can’t afford them, I don’t pay for the dentist as I am a carer). I am 42, my front teeth are ok but most of my back teeth and wisdom teeth have been extracted 😬. It’s probably the one thing I hate the most about myself. I am hoping one day I will be able to afford dentures or even implants but I’m not getting my hopes up.
my teeth started crumbling when I was pregnant with dd1 at the age of 21.

Exactly, the mental side of this, I think has been the worst to deal with.

I also had one of my bone grafts fail. And it had to be redone. To have been through what feels like the most, to find out then that it was in vain, is not great. Then to have to go through it all again.

And I have had physical pain, as I am sure you know, coping with stitches in your mouth is not a walk in the park.

I was wondering if your user name was in jest 😄. As I cannot even bear to eat yoghurt anymore. Ok it's probably kept me alive this past year, but I cannot face any more yoghurt or soup or custard, or baby food.

Eating out...yes completely with you here. I cannot bite into anything. I have to cut everything into bite size pieces. So feel like I'd look like a right plonker cutting up a pizza with a knife and fork if I ate that out. I had to ask for a knife at McDonald's...to cut chicken nuggets. 🙈. FML.

I really was not prepared for a lot of what I have had to deal with.

ToxicPositivity · 22/09/2023 21:56

I left home at just shy of 16, no bother with my teeth beforehand but my mum had swapped us into this Q10 healthshop toothepaste. Shortly after moving out I needed a filling, filling fell out, another filling and on and on until I said OUT. I was 16, I had no idea. The dentist took it out and left a permanent scar right across my right cheek where he split the skin being so fucking rough.

I didn't go back until I was 29, in that time I had cracked a front tooth in labour (tongue piercing and forceps pain don't mix). Had 5 upper teeth out, 4 pre/molars and my upper right front.

I have never felt so ashamed in my life. Had the bone graft just incase, my bone was ok at the time but the dentist recommended it so did do, had a partial front tooth for about 6 months at most, one single front tooth that was a pain in the flappy arse, it literally hung off the two next teeth, it's a wonder I never choked on it.

Getting my front implant was one of the best things I have ever done in my life. My only regret is colour, I went with their recommendation, It's whiter than white, it's a couple shades too bright for me.

BakedTattie · 22/09/2023 21:56

could you ask to be referred to the closest dental hospital to you?

I got front top and bottom veneers and back crowns through my dental hospital. So it was free. But it was dentists who are further training in cosmetic dentistry. Not sure if this is the case throughout uk but defo was for me (I’m in Edinburgh).

I had awful teeth beforehand with no structure. So I had to have my teeth build up beforehand. So worth it though as my veneers should last 10-15 years and can be fixed at my
local dentist. And it was free.maintenance isn’t but is a lot less than private dental veneers.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 22/09/2023 21:57

@HappiDaze
I have a partial denture fitted after having had some teeth extracted due to severe gum disease. First couple of teeth I lost were at the back and I just left them with gaps but when one of my front teeth became very wobbly I was fitted for a denture which was fitted the day I had my tooth out.

However, I have subsequently lost a couple of additional teeth and have been advised to wait 3 months before fitting of additional denture because of gum shrinkage .

@frecklejuice even though I think now it's inevitable I will at some point lose the majority of my teeth, I will only be having them removed as a last resort and on an individual basis .

Yes i was not prepered for it either, after years of failed root canals, root resection, cyst removal nothing worked so at 40 years old i had to have it removed . I was really looking forward to getting it done and be over, but little did i know that it was only the beginning of my nightmare. I can't wait to get my denture out as soon as u get home. I am pretty sure my long term relationship will be over soon because of this.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 22/09/2023 22:04

I have full dentures and have done since 27.

I had horrendous teeth due to neglect and my mother drinking and taking drugs while pregnant.

By 25 I’d had 6 teeth had to be removed, 3 that just crumbled, numerous root canals and crowns. I was in almost constant pain with one tooth or another.

I hated speaking. I never smiled. I often had swelling. And after the fourth lot of antibiotics in a year for an abscess I was referred to the dental hospital. They went through all the options, but we came to the conclusion that for me full dentures was the best option.

They take a bit of getting used to, and the ones made before my surgery (I had remaining teeth and broken bits taken out under GA in one go) didn’t fit well while I was healing. But I’ve had a new lease of life since I got my new ones after three months.

Dentures aren’t better than decent teeth, but they’re vastly better than horrific painful teeth.

Don’t be talked into getting bright white ones though. My first set were bright day-glo white and very obviously false.
my second set were not perfectly straight and not dayglo white and it’s not instantly obvious they’re fake.

NamechangeForthisquestion1 · 22/09/2023 22:13

For those who had the singular Valplast denture, how much did it cost?

Do you think part of it is because of a knock to your confidence?

Are implants an option? If it's two side by side maybe one implant with a bridge may be possible. Again, the bone loss may be a factor though.

All of my issues stem from a failed root canal. Never again.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 22/09/2023 22:23

@Ilikewinter I had the mold for my initial denture taken before my front tooth extraction - I guess they used the tooth that was planned to be removed as the model for the tooth on the denture plate. It was then fitted about 10 mins after the extraction.

Pushpull · 22/09/2023 22:24

I understand this. Tooth pain is the worst. I have no reason why my teeth are terrible. I really look after them but they just are. I'm waiting on a wisdom and molar coming out under GA (I've been waiting 3 mths and had 2 infections in that time) and then I'll need to decide what to do as I'll have no back teeth on one side. I sometimes think I'd be better to pull them all out, I know I probably wouldn't but the tooth pain is awful

sadaboutmycat · 22/09/2023 22:25

Look at the FB site Dentures at a young age. People in their 20s there. The sheer relief they feel from no pain, no infections etc.
I have partials upper and lower. Only my family know. They're easy to care for, and I am very happy with them. I sleep with them in and have no problems.

sadaboutmycat · 22/09/2023 22:26

Raera · 22/09/2023 19:30

Waiting 3 months after extraction is not true.
I have gum disease and have had to lose some teeth. Partial denture was in place before I left the dental surgery

I didn't at all. Got mine immediately. NHS too. Customer facing time so no possibility of a wait.

Oh yes, I call this the movie star glow white look. My first plate was also a bit on the bright side, so with my 2nd one now I asked the technician to tone it down a bit. I don't even understand how that happens as they took a colour match from my bottom teeth.

I was glad to read that you are getting on okay with them now. It sounds like you have been on a long and trying journey.

I do wish though, that medically dental surgery could be treated as medical. So many people on this thread alone have been through a lot, yet things are left to such a late stage where the worst case scenario is the only option in the end.

All of my surgeries I have been awake for. As dental surgery here doesn't quality for general anaesthetic like any other surgery. Most of the time they just assume it's for aesthetic reasons. It's so very wrong on so many levels. I can have a general anaesthetic to have a Mirena coil placed, but not for a bone graft into my jaw, for which they are taking my own bone from another area.

It's mind boggling.

No definitely not thinking of this because of two broken teeth, I have 3 missing all on the bottom that I lost through decay when I was younger. I have had multiple broken teeth, 4 crowns, root canal on various teeth and fillings on others. I've just had enough tonight with being in pain and having to worry about what I eat in case another tooth breaks.

I hate my teeth they are weak and horrible and I'd love them all to be gone!

The 3 month thing has scared me though, surely they can't expect you to not have any teeth for 3 months? I'd look like my Nan!!

I have teeth like this. They drive me fucking mad. I honestly spend about £1000 a year min on NHS treatments.

Bridges, crowns, casings, more crowns. My teeth break and snap all the time. Including one of the front ones. Just broke of at the roof when l bit into a lolly.

l have 4 molars on top and 5 on the bottom. I have 4 crowns and waiting for another. I’ve got a bridge and a porcelain casing on the front. They cost a fortune and still don’t look great. I hate them all. Teeth like chalk😰

My confidence wasn't there to start with, i tried not to smile for years because of my teeth but now its even worse.
Implants may not be an option as i have no bone left because of years of infections, my teeth are very weak ,most of them have root canals ,few were removed and replaced with bridge on one side.nmy front teeth are not strong enough to support another bridge so i have only this bloody denture left.

I feel for you, sounds like mine, literally one front one broke of a few years ago biting on a Magnum.

Mintyt · 23/09/2023 07:16

Haven't read all posts.
I had 3 teeth removed and had a denture straight away. It was a difficult week!
Nobody would know I had a denture and I was very upset about it, I told my TL about it and she said she knows load of people with dentures but no one speaks about it, so I do.
With all of my heart I hated it but loves it more than a big gap.
I've had another two teeth out and have had another must better denture made. Which fits lovely, you would never know, the only thing I can't eat is chewing gum. I now don't want implants but really I couldn't afford them anyway

sarahh96 · 23/09/2023 10:06

@NamechangeForthisquestion1 mine was £700 for one tooth about 6 years ago. Knocked me bandy when he told me the price but I couldn't put up with the alternative. My Husband is having a full bottom set of Valplast and they're coming in just under 1K. I've no idea why I was charged as much as I was for just one. I suspect dentist put they're own mark up on top

NamechangeForthisquestion1 · 23/09/2023 11:22

@sarahh96 ooh.. that sounds very expensive. I'm considering a denture if I'm told I have to have a root canal. (Really don't want one) I no longer have an NHS dentist and can't find one 😢

sarahh96 · 23/09/2023 11:38

@NamechangeForthisquestion1 it was, horrendously expensive!!! Can't help thinking I was ripped off. I think I'm the only person left in the country that has an NHS dentist, although he's totally unreliable. If you're in Sussex I could point you in his direction. He's very good.....when you can actually get to see him!!

NamechangeForthisquestion1 · 23/09/2023 11:41

@sarahh96 ahh unfortunately I'm nowhere near (in the North) and don't drive. I did find an NHS dentist in London who offered me an appointment straight away, trying to decide whether it's worth it.. will be a 4 hour journey - around £150 on the train.. cheaper than £1000's if I need treatment.

Lollygaggle · 23/09/2023 13:35

The laboratory fee on valplast type dentures are high , starting at £400 ish. Then four plus appointments when running a room in a private practice will start around £200 an hour.

Normal acrylic denture lab fees start at a lower price but top quality dentures the laboratory fees can go up to £1500. It's a very skilled job to make dentures and laboratory technicians are still underpaid bearing in mind their skills and investment in new technology.
