How would you feel after climbing six flights of stairs?

I had to climb six flights of very steep stairs quite quickly today.

I’m quite unfit but have been trying lately to eat better, lose some weight, and move more.

Just wondering, how you would feel after doing that and what’s your general fitness level?

I’m 40, for reference.

I'd definitely be out of breath. I'm 37 and overweight.

IntheSnowySnowyMountains · 22/09/2023 22:48

I'd be very out of breath and would probably have to stop for a rest, but I'd make it. In my 50s, not at all fit and need an ankle replacement... am I allowed to use the handrail?

In my 20s I had 75 steps from the street to my front door. I could just about do it in one go if I took it steady.

Flossflower · 22/09/2023 23:22

Fine. I am 71. My hobby is hill walking.

I do eight to my office if the lifts are busy/broken, and am generally a bit puffed by the top in the morning - however I have walked in (30 minutes) and am carting my laptop etc. Fitbit also has my heart score as excellent for my age (50) and I think I am pretty fit.

KohlaParasaurus · 22/09/2023 23:30

My legs might grumble towards the end but I'd only get breathless if I ran up all the stairs. DH would race me. He'd win.

(59, I do a fair amount of exercise including hill walking.)

aurynne · 22/09/2023 23:33

No problems at all. I went up 3000 steps recently for a hike. I'm 47, normal BMI, do a lot of walking and hiking.

hopsalong · 22/09/2023 23:52

Fine. I do it multiple times a day every day at work, and we also have four flights at home between the kitchen and our bedroom. I am not super fit but I would be worried if I was huffing and puffing after a few flights of stairs.

StarlightLady · 23/09/2023 08:52

How would l feel after climbing 6 flights of stairs? It depends who or what is at the top 😂.

PoseasRadicalActuallyMisogynistic · 23/09/2023 08:55

60’s women, I’d be fine. I’ve walked up four floors twice yesterday, to stretch my legs after driving for hours. And it wasn’t enough exercise

margotrose · 23/09/2023 08:58

I'd be okay fitness-wise - but I have sacroiliitis in my back which would definitely cause me some pain.

LIZS · 23/09/2023 09:00

A bit out of breath, heart beating noticeably, maybe tightness in hamstrings.

EarringsandLipstick · 23/09/2023 09:03

I'd be completely fine, though I'd obviously notice I had done it!

But I'm pretty fit, run or train every day.

PenhillDarkMonarch · 23/09/2023 09:11

Ok. Probably have quite a high heart rate by then and would be breathing quite hard but clear headed and would be able to go on and do another six - though probably at a slower pace than the first six Grin

43ontherocksporfavor · 23/09/2023 09:12

My heart would be working harder and I’d be a little out of breath at the top but only briefly. I’m 52 and walk miles with my dog daily.

I’m intrigued - was this a hill challenge of some kind? Am always on the look out (see username 😂)

A beautiful track that takes you to stunning views of one of my favourite mountains in new Zealand: Mount Taranaki.

I think it's about 3,200 steps.

Mangorei Track to Pouakai Tarns

On a fine day enjoy spectacular views of Taranaki and the Pouakai Tarns on this day hike or overnight tramp.

😍 that’s stunning - and the reason I enjoy maintaining my fitness to be able to do things like that.

dikwad · 23/09/2023 10:06

I'm 40 in two weeks. I'd feel fine, but I do a lot of peak bagging so there is that!

AnonAnonandAriston · 23/09/2023 10:48

DewinDwl · 22/09/2023 16:16

I am anaemic at the moment so even one flight of stairs leaves me slightly breathless with legs heavy as lead. 6 flights would be unthinkable without stopping often. I have learnt the hard way that pushing yourself while anaemic will take you exactly nowhere.

when I'm not anaemic I'm pretty fit. My parents live on a seventh floor and I would normally start getting out of breath on the 6th floor

It's awful isn't it? At my worst my ferritin was 0 and my hb was 76, I was breathless walking across the kitchen! Even when my levels were higher you just don't realise how heavy your body can feel when you don't have enough red blood cells circulating

Florenceatemycake · 23/09/2023 10:59

OK I think but a bit breathless. I'm 38 and 28 weeks pregnant. Try to exercise fairly regularly including HIIT.

Bubbles254 · 23/09/2023 13:14

Just ran up and down the stairs at home 6 times. Felt a bit breathless and heart rate went up to 86 from 55. Might have been lower if I had walked though.

Mid 40s and don't like cardio. Only do strength training.

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/09/2023 13:15

Ok if I was just walking. Running, would be a bit puffed.

FallingAutumnLeaf · 23/09/2023 19:58

We've got 2 flights of stairs at home (13 steps each).
I've just jogged up/down/up/down/up had a conversation with DS and come back down.

So, not 6 straight flights of stairs and I got some easier patches.

I was breathing harder than normal - but able to talk to DS without issue.

40-something. Obese, but working on it.

Mylobsterteapot · 23/09/2023 20:03

Fine, but post-covid lungs would be protesting. I do this multiple times a day at work and sometimes it’s ok, but sometimes I need my inhaler at the top. It’s worse if I’ve eaten a meal.

ImBrian · 23/09/2023 20:13

I’d be fine, if I ran up them I’d get a bit out of breath possibly. I’m 43, healthy weight, cycle 3 or 4 times a week and weight train 4 times a week so I’m a lot fitter then I was this time last year.
