Bloody dogs everywhere!

AIBU to think there's been a substantial rise in dog owners in recent years?
I live by the coast with a fantastic beach and lots of nature to walk in so perhaps it's just my area and similar areas around the UK.

I am an animal lover including dogs but even I'm getting mildly annoyed with constantly having to dodge them on the footpaths near me. (I walk 3 miles every day to the gym). Some owners don't give a toss if another member of the public is walking towards them.

Dogshit everywhere.. It's an increasing problem here.. Not just dogshit.. but black bags of dogshit on the floor 😂

I suspect many of these dogs are not truly loved - They play in with the British obsession of 'showing off' to the world with designer brand named clothes and flash expensive cars on finance. These fancy expensive breeds are just for the owner to ponce around with outside and show off.

Can't stand the ugly types.. Staffies and bulldogs.. orrible demon creatures.

Oh and another one who doesn't understand the cockapoo/sproodle love. I've met a few in the flesh and they've failed to endear me.

I work with dogs and the amount I meet whose owners have absolutely no idea what to do with them or how to read them is staggering. And that goes for nutrition, socialisation, dog-on-dog interaction, everything.

Most other dog professionals I know daren’t touch a dog born during lockdown as they’re usually ridden with anxieties because people bought them as they’d finished Ozark and Couch to 5k and didn’t know what to do next.

It should be made much harder to own - and breed - a dog. They’re animals and need to be understood and treated as such.

oakleaffy · 21/09/2023 15:17

I own a well behaved small dog and completely agree with you, OP.
So many appalling owners about.

Yesterday a Working spaniel puppy was being a complete arsehole- why the heck do people get working lines as pets!
Growly snappy thing- Horrible behaviour .
Too many people get totally unsuitable dogs for their lifestyle.

I totally agree with this.

I was reading the other day that dog licences were mandatory here until 1988 and apparently still are in NI. I would love to know if this weeds out the irresponsible owners and if it has any impact?

DiscoHippo · 21/09/2023 15:37

Working Cockers are hard, and people then make the mistake of over-stimulating and over-exercising them so they never learn how to relax, that it’s okay not to have to perform calculus or Latin verbs or parcour every two mins

Absolutely agree.
Every dog I have owned, I received a hard grilling and multiple interviews from either rescue centre or responsible person who was breeding a dog for their own lines and wanted good responsible homes for the others.

Each time it was a long planned litter and a waiting list was done long before female met the male.

These also offer lifetime support for any dog they bred, and will take them back for any reason at any age.

Also gave a complete money back guarantee for a month- and money back on sliding scale for a year.
A contract signed by both parties .

But too many people breed their female thinking it’s easy money- and will sell to anyone.

Huge sums were made in lockdown.
£22k from one litter bred specifically for colour. Recessive trait, so hardly a good thing.
Temperament, health and conformation are not considered with puppy farmers.

It definitely needs to be impossible to sell puppies online via ads and farcebook.

And the importing of overseas dogs - It’s a racket.

Staffies and bulldogs are not demon creatures.Bit daft saying that imo.

gogomoto · 21/09/2023 15:43

I've had dogs my whole life. The main difference now is the rise of untrained dogs who are treated like babies, I have no issues with trained dogs in places, it's the ones that bark and jump up that annoy me. My ddog loves the pub and I take him regularly, always have, but he's content to snooze until there's food around unlike this hyper breeds

ClaraBourne · 21/09/2023 15:43

I hate people calling them 'fur babies'. Of carrying them around like a handbag.

There used to be just one dog left at school gate, now there are hordes of them, barking whining and shitting. One on particular is the size of a small horse and the smell of him is just foul.

Fishandchipsatthebeach · 21/09/2023 15:45

I agree OP

MrsRachelDanvers · 21/09/2023 15:48

I heard someone refer to them as grandogs the other day-accompanied by a tinkly laugh as of they’re embarrassed to be using such a phrase. Looking after their kids’ dogs. Wtf?

Monkeybutt1 · 21/09/2023 15:48

Totally fed up with them, I can't go for a run without a dog jumping up at me or almost being taken out by the extendable dog lead stretching across the path, they are invisible trip wires. I like dogs but I don't want them jumping up at me when I'm out.
I'm the villain of the family at the moment as my brother has a cockapoo which is badly behaved, jumps up at everyone and on furniture etc, I will not allow this dog in my house so I am comparable to Cruella De'Vill according to the rest of the family.

DiscoHippo · 21/09/2023 15:53

In response to @oakleaffy Totally agree; breeding should be done to give back to the breed, not to make a quick buck. The damage that the resulting animals then have to live with is horrendous - see most French Bulldogs, for example
