Wales 20mph massive confusion.

We've got drivers so scared they're doing 16 mph. We've got drivers gesticulating and swearing at drivers attempting to follow the rules. We've got road signs going from 30 to 20, then 40, then 20 on the same stretch of road.

1.1 million people voted in the 2021 senedd election. There's 1.6 million registered drivers

We’ve a 3 mile stretch of road crossing over from England to Wales which changes speed 6 times (I counted today) 30 to 20 to 50 to 20 to 50 to 20 again. We have the 20mph and old 30mph signs on display next to each other and traffic lights which seem to now need adjusting due to the 20mph limit which haven’t been. This is by all accounts a main road with occasional houses dotted alongside it.

Interesting that most of the people who are saying to stop complaining aren’t in or near Wales.

Its a very poorly thought out scheme which has been universally applied without consideration to local issues.

llareggub · 20/09/2023 18:28

I’m in Wales.

Signage can’t change overnight, everywhere.

I’ve driven since this was introduced and it’s fine. Most of the roads were 20 mph anyway (outside schools) and it certainly isn’t the blanket ban stated by the nutter Andrew RT Davies.

It's 20 mph where I live and everybody ignores it.

If you can see a 20mph sign then its 20mph, obviously. If I saw something like that photo I would assume that some joker had rotated a pair of signs around 180° and the 30 sign was supposed to be pointing at people leaving the more-peopley-area side of the sign and the 20 was supposed to be pointing at those arriving in the more-peopley-area.

The speed limit is a limit not a target. There is no harm in going at 20mph to be on the safe side if there's any confusion. There is no hazard or danger caused by going at 20mph in a 30mph zone. So if in any doubt at all, go at 20mph.

If there's no 20mph sign in sight and you haven't seen a limit repeater sign in the last 200 metres then you are probably in a 30mph zone if there is street lighting. There's also a clue that the limit is 30mph on a main road if the side streets have larger (change of limit) 20mph signs for those turning off the main road.

If paying sufficient attention to these things and making appropriate judgements about a safe and legal speed is at all tricky for you, please just get the bus instead.

It's obvious no one has turned the sign around as there is a sign below it facing in the same direction. If your observational and judgement skills are this bad perhaps you should catch the bus.

Signage should have changed overnight, they've had enough time to get prepared so there should be no excuses.

What excuse do they have for putting up new signs in Tongwynlais then removing them less than 24 hours later so they could put them somewhere else because, in the workmen's words, there wasn't enough signs made?

Drakeford is making Wales a complete laughing stock yet again with his pathetic attempts to show what he perceives as power. I really hope that the electorate hits Welsh Labour where it hurts next time and if I was Kier Starmer I'd be reining him in because he's doing so much damage to the Labour Party with his covid rules, alcohol tax, speed limits etc. You can see how much the people are shifting on social media and I do genuinely think that Labour will lose votes.

museumum · 20/09/2023 18:46

We’ve had 20 in edinburgh for ages. Most roads within the city except some main arterial routes that are 30 (were 40).
on average people are clicked at around 25-27mph down from 35ish. So people are still “speeding” but at a lower speed less lethal to pedestrians if there is an accident.

User19537876 · 20/09/2023 16:09

Probably best to just go at twenty all the while

This leads to road rage when you're on a 30mph road

llareggub · 20/09/2023 18:49

Interested in your thoughts on how all signs could change overnight, given limited workforce and budget?

Rexxxxxx · 20/09/2023 18:50

20 is great and will save lives/the environment. Of course there will be teething issues, the police just need to fine those traveling over 22 in a 20 zone and the speedy racers will soon adhere.

User19537876 · 20/09/2023 18:53

I imagine people will think twice before visiting there.

Tiredmum100 · 20/09/2023 18:57

It's a bit confusing in some areas as some signs have been (badly) covered, with no new signs up. I travel a 40mph road every day, and I have no idea what the speed there is now. I live work around the Carmarthenshire/swansea boundary. Carmarthenshire appears to have done a better job at new signs compared to swansea imo.

Not really the point of the thread, but today I was driving on road today, going 40 mph. I had a car 2 inches off my bumper, he then pulled around me and gave me a nasty glare as he passed as if I was in the wrong for going 40 in a 40 zone.

We’ve had targeted 20mph and that’s the difference (although there’s not widespread adherence). Let’s face it though, it’s hard to go above 20 on some of the roads in the city due to congestion (and shit public transport)

Ombrémermaid · 20/09/2023 19:23

20mph past schools, hospitals and through very built up areas is fair enough, but we don’t have good travel infrastructure here in Wales at the best of times, so it’s challenging. I’ve heard of community nurses not being able to fit in all their allocated patients in a shift due to the new speed limits amongst other complaints. Personally I’m against this new change. 20mph in certain places is fine, but not everywhere. Bristol is not Ceredigion.

afaloren · 20/09/2023 19:28

I’m visiting North Wales in just over a week and worried about this. I’ve seen some people saying roads are down to 20 even if the sign says 30 and other people saying some roads are still 30 so go by the signs! Don’t want to get a speeding ticket (or hurt anyone obviously).

llareggub · 20/09/2023 20:10

It’s not everywhere. There are plenty of roads that are still 30,40, 50 etc.

You're wrong. The speed limit is a target. In fact if you do a speed awareness course the instructor will talk to you about the dangers of driving both above and significantly below the speed limit when there is no reason to do so.

TroysMammy · 20/09/2023 20:18

The signs which used to show a 30 limit have been spray painted over by the council but they have left the wording underneath "end of 20mph zone". The implementation is a shambles.

FlyingFlamingo · 20/09/2023 20:28

I’m not against it but it has been handled very badly in my area of South Wales - speed camera signs still saying 30 in a now 20 area and signs being placed the wrong way round so what should be 20 saying 30 and what should be 30 saying 20 so one side of the road is 20 and the other 30! At one junction there was a 30 speed camera sign literally right next to the new 20 because the 20 was facing the wrong way. Some roads are staying 30 for no apparent reason (residential, on a school route) and the maps they have released have weird codes and are hard to decipher. I think it’s very easy to say it’s not confusing but if you don’t live in Wales (or my part anyway!) you really don’t understand the reality of trying to drive here at the moment!

20mph on the motorway is dangerous. 20mph on a 30 road is absolutely fine. it's impatient drivers who can't possibly drive below the speed limit and are in such a hurry that are the problem.

LlynTegid · 20/09/2023 20:33

Well I have often argued that 25% of people who have a driving licence should not (some for medical reasons, some for conduct on the road, some because their car supports criminal activity).

Seems like the experiences the OP describes supports my view.

We've been to North Wales today. We saw the occasional 20mph sign but it didn't seem to cause any problem. There were no police or speed cameras anyway - except on the A55

That’s fine - and those drivers who wish to drive nearer to the speed limit are perfectly entitled to safely overtake the ones who wish to go at a slower pace, something which often seems to anger them.
