Wales 20mph massive confusion.

justasking111 · 20/09/2023 15:41

We've got drivers so scared they're doing 16 mph. We've got drivers gesticulating and swearing at drivers attempting to follow the rules. We've got road signs going from 30 to 20, then 40, then 20 on the same stretch of road.

I think if people are that confused, they shouldn’t be on the roads.

This!

Another of Mr Drakeford's vanity exercises....meanwhile people are literally dying from lack of healthcare while he burns money ensuring he has a legacy.

howaboutchocolate · 20/09/2023 16:48

how difficult is it to just drive at 20 if the signage isn't clear? I don't get all the fuss.

I haven't noticed any discernable difference in the standard of driving in Merthyr Tydfil. Make of that what you will.

Hedgesgalore · 20/09/2023 16:50

The whole "use street lights as a guide" is itself confusing people, due to councils having applied for exemptions for certain roads and inadequate (or non existent) signs for new 20 areas.

Agree totally with the poster who said about Drakeford wanting a legacy.

FourStringsNoWaiting · 20/09/2023 16:52

Borrowed from a driving instructor friend's Facebook page. A lot of people are confused, doesn't mean they're all bad drivers

Wales 20mph massive confusion.
justasking111 · 20/09/2023 16:53

97,% of roads in Wales they say are 20 mph

Our council has made all but two small stretches of roads 20mph. Because they found it easier. Whereas Cardiff more intelligently analysed traffic flow etc and then decided.

Sir Charles the 20 signs are very small around here, then you have buses and lorries going along that sometimes cover them up, lots of other road signs, you don't need to make out that the speed signs are the only thing to be noticed. I'm not surprised so many people on here are saying, if you're confused you shouldn't he driving. Such a mumsnetty attitude. In real life, most people I know are highly irritated by all these new signs, the chaotic and confusing way they were put up, and with no logic behind a lot of it, lime who needs a 20 yard stretch of 30 in between two 20 zones. It is a farce.

Yes, and that's a bad thing because....?

We need to shift away from private car use! Roll on viable alternatives!

Hecate01 · 20/09/2023 17:10

@HohiyiKozbevi sadly that photo isn't a joke and no one has turned any signs around. There's so many examples of this, signs put up but the old ones left in place. It's fine if you live local and know the roads but for anyone who doesn't it's very confusing.

I had a woman beeping and swearing and gesticulating at me yesterday because I overtook her. She was doing 16mph in a National area. No fucking idea what she was thinking, maybe she thinks literally all roads are 20 now? It seems to have caused much bafflement.

gogomoto · 20/09/2023 17:19

I asked a policeman on Sunday, he said it was simple - if there's a sign obey that speed limit, if there's no sign it's 20 mph if there's street lights and national speed limit for that road type if there isn't. You can't get a ticket if there's a road sign saying 30 or 40 as many arterial routes have remained faster.

I've been in wales twice this week and no issues at all. Bath however has silly 20mph main routes!

And putting widespread 20mph limits in is going to magically create viable public transport options in rural, semi rural and suburban communities how, precisely?

What I was responding to was the quote from the wider transport plan for Wales, not the specific 20mph bit.

Our village hasn't seen a bus in over 30 years. We're 600 feet above sea level. The shops are at the base of the hills. You try walking up and down them if you're not very fit.

We don't have the infrastructure, our bus routes cut back. Our trains seasonal. More in the summer for the tourists.

We do need cars to get about.

SunUpSunDown · 20/09/2023 17:38

As we approached one village yesterday evening behind another car, the speed warning sign was flashing "20" and the actual signage right beside it said "30".

Sadik · 20/09/2023 17:42

No problem at all here - there are perfectly sensible 20 signs where I'd expect them to be, and people seem to be managing to follow them without issue.

For some reason Ceredigion don't seem to have updated their signage as promptly as in my county, but last Sunday most people seemed to be using their common sense and driving somewhere between 20 & 30mph in built up areas

Overall I'm very happy that traffic is moving a bit slower, it feels much safer for pedestrians and particularly children. I imagine all the fuss will die down soon & everyone will get used to it.

whatsappdoc · 20/09/2023 17:46

We were wending our way through residential Cardiff yesterday and everyone was trying their best. Some signs said New Speed Limit and had a 30 symbol so not sure if that was put in a few months ago or was relevant to the new rules! So we just stuck to 20 to be on the safe side.

elderflowerandpomelo · 20/09/2023 17:46

yep, I agrée it’s mad.

there needs to be a national change in law and signage so that ALL 30mph becomes 20mph. Ideally all 40mph shd also be 30mph too - often residential…

you can’t have signs saying one thing and law another. And the silly changes of rules are mad. 20mph everywhere!

Unihorn · 20/09/2023 17:47

We've got 30 painted on a lot of our roads but 20 signs up, and some roads have 20 at one end and 30 at the opposite entrance with no repeaters in between, so I can see how people are confused. I drove about 5 miles the other day through 12 different speed limits with varying levels of signage.

Overall I'm happy with the 20mph in most places but the communication and rollout has been pretty shite.

IClaudine · 20/09/2023 17:49

Sadik I agree. People like to moan about anything new. It will all settle down.

Exactly @justasking111 sticks are no good, you have to put the carrots in place if you want to bring about real change.

For all those saying people will get used to it - nope, not always. The widespread 20mph limits in the region I mentioned were removed after a sustained campaign lasting well over then a year to have them removed and replaced with targeted limits.
