Reception child: fresh uniform every day?

Feel a little silly writing here but I really don't want to ask IRL!
So, my expectations was for my son to be able to wear his trousers and his sweatshirt for at least a couple of days before needing washing. Reality: trousers have a faint smell of wee at the end of every day (that never happened in nursery, but maybe his day is now different, who knows) and the sweatshirt's sleeves are covered in food/snot. I am putting them in the wash and send him in with a new clean set every morning.
Is this your experience as well or are your children better at managing their clothes? Or am I worrying too much and should I send him in in the same clothes and only wash them when they really smell/are seriously dirty?

I had fresh uniform sets every day. They're so messy at that age.

cocksstrideintheevening · 20/09/2023 14:34

Dts had a full set for each day in yr. they were generally minging at the end of each day.

MissPettigrewIsWFH · 20/09/2023 14:34

My daughter has just started Reception, having been in the school nursery for the past year. I definitely aim to get more than a day out of a set of uniform and wash it when it is clearly dirty (during the week). We average 2 to 3 wears out of an outfit. But she does sometimes come home covered in pen or grass stains that require intervention...

DD is now in year 1 and can rarely wear the same uniform for more than a day, there’s always some paint or mud or food on her and in the summer her uniform gets sticky with suncream. I’ve just ended up with a set for each day to minimise washing, luckily it’s all generic not branded so not too expensive.

DiscoDragon · 20/09/2023 14:35

My son is year 5 and I still need to send him in fresh uniform most days! He often comes home with half his lunch smeared down his jumper, snot on the sleeves and mud all over his trousers.

ScarlettDarling · 20/09/2023 14:38

If he smells of wee and is covered in snot, then he really needs clean uniform. I’m a reception teacher (and a mum) and some children are still clean at the end of the day while others are scruffy. If the uniform is still clean, wear it for another day. If it’s dirty, wash it. It really is as simple as that!

NeedTheSeaside · 20/09/2023 14:40

Fresh set every day. Let them throw themselves into every day without worrying about their clothes!!

except for the wee. He needs to stop playing & go to the toilet in time. Apart from the fact he just needs to do this because it's healthy & hygenic, but he'll end up with no friends if he smells of wee,

Paddingtonsmarmlade · 20/09/2023 14:41

My reception child is in clean everyday with the occasional time a jumper can last more than one day, usually on warmer days and they haven’t worn it at lunch and thrown dinner down it.

mondaytosunday · 20/09/2023 14:46

Non- new polo (or shirt or whatever), clean vest and undies and socks daily. Skirt (or trousers) would be washed once a week, obviously more if actually dirty. Cardis or sweaters as needed. Blazers once every half term.

user1471523870 · 20/09/2023 14:50

Oh great I feel better I am not over doing it!
Clean clothes and daily bath are not negotiable (with old fashion attention to fingernails ha ha!), but I questioned myself about being 'too much' vs the norm.

And about the smell of wee, we are working on it but it's really faint, def not scaring people away. His trousers LOOK ok at the end of the day, but it's just that they don't pass my 'sniff test' (so, it's not like you can smell them if you sit next to him, it's only noticeable by me when he takes them off and I put my nose in that area to decide 'reusable vs laundry basket', if you see what I mean).

Fresh jumper/shirt every day. Trousers/skirt wear another day if they so happened to get home unscathed (about 50/50 in reception with mine!) but in the wash in not. I'd be gently trying to find out why they smell of wee I think in case there was a problem.

user1471523870 · 20/09/2023 14:51

Well, of course clean underwear and socks every day. I didn't even write it as it's obvious!

DS needed (and still does, even though he’s 8 now) fresh every day. I think he just rolls in mud at breaktime. Plus pen, lunch, snot and god knows what else.

DD (age 5) could wear the same clothes all week sometimes I swear. They don’t look dirty at all. Of course some days she will tip her lunch down it or whatever, but she’s just generally less filthy than her brother.

GingerIsBest · 20/09/2023 14:54

I think the wee thing is normal. I noticed similar with DD at that age - I think they are bad about wiping, and the toilets are usually minging so they're in and out at the speed of light and all kinds of normal hygiene gets passed by! Grin.

The only item we didn't always have to wash daily was dresses (DD) and, sometimes, jumpers. Shirts, trousers always came back filthy on a daily basis.

Unicorntastic · 20/09/2023 14:57

My DD has just started Y1, in reception she wore a new set of clothes pretty much everyday apart from the school jersey Cardigan if it was visibly clean because it is bright green so harder to put a wash on for that colour!

Phos · 20/09/2023 14:58

I’ve got a daughter in summer uniform at the moment. I usually put her in a fresh dress every day (yellow and white so they show every little smudge) and cardigan depends if she spilt down it or not.

Winter uniform similar. Fresh shirt everyday and the pinafore and cardigan depend if they’ve been spilt on!

KeepTheTempo · 20/09/2023 14:59

New t-shirt every day in summer, then in winter it's a new jumper/cardigan every day and t-shirts can go an extra day or so as they're mostly an underlayer (maybe with a little spot wipe on collars).

Shorts and trousers generally lasted us a 1-2 of days with maybe a wipe of a small food or dirt mark, but I've rarely had wee smell. Have you checked how he's going to the toilet? Often kids in reception hold for too long as they're distracted or nervous, so have accidents, or they don't shake or use a bit of toilet paper afterwards to catch any drips.

Mummyofthewildones · 20/09/2023 15:02

My DD (4) has just started in reception and today is the first day I've sent her in the same dress and cardi as yesterday. Every school day before now she has had to have a totally clean set of uniform. Even had to buy some laundry bleach for her rancid white polos!!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 20/09/2023 15:02

Depends on the child. DD6 kept her uniform way cleaner when in reception than year 1 oddly.

Iliketulips · 20/09/2023 15:02

DD used to have a clean polo shirt, underwear and tights every day. Skirt/trousers and jumper washed every other day. I can't remember feeling she needed more. They're all different though. Some boys love to play football, and in this instance many will need a complete change of uniform, particularly in the winter.

jesuisterriblementmarrier · 20/09/2023 15:04

I still have a fresh set of uniform every day since reception. DC are in year 6

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 20/09/2023 15:05

We don't do fresh every day as standard, depends on the state of the uniform. My DD very rarely wears her jumper in school as ita a warm building so that usually just stays in her bag at school. Maybe new polo, depending on food/marks and always get 2 or 3 wears out of skirts

wineandmaltesershappyme · 20/09/2023 15:05

I have a girl, Y3, she'll wear a fresh gingham dress every day, cardigan for 2-3 days (her school has 2 colours so i have cardigans in each colour).
Her skirt/pinafore dress can last all week (unless she spills lunch/gets pen on it (rare)) but fresh top every day.

Boomboom22 · 20/09/2023 15:06

Def or they look a state, well all my boys did! But stained white t shirts from school paint I'm already using, clean but they are new so if the school doesn't put aprons on then I'm getting the year out of them! Save for colder days so less likely to take the jumper off though.

GigiAnnna · 20/09/2023 15:08

My youngest is in year 1 and his uniform usually needs washing after 1 wear. I try to keep jumpers for an extra day but in reality there's stains on them and they need washing. Older kids can usually last 2 days if there's no dirt on them, but I always wash their shirts after 1 wear.
