Will we look back on programmes like Naked Attraction and Love Island and think wtf?

at the risk of sounding like Mary Whitehouse I think that now to be honest.

in the Russell Brand fall out I saw a clip yesterday of him and Alan Carr getting the female, single audience members of Alan Carr’s show to stand up while Russell walked round deciding which ones were “nice”. The theme been that Russell was picking who he was going to take back and shag after the show. That went out on channel 4 with everyone laughing and thinking it was ok.

Will we look back at current shows which objectify women and men, judge them on their looks, their penis size, their pubic hair, whether they are in a couple or not and think what the hell were we doing letting stuff like that be broadcast? Remember stuff like Kanga on Big Brother masturbating while drunk with a beer bottle in the garden. What on earth were the tv executives doing letting stuff like that happen to drunk, vulnerable youngsters? We had Jeremy Kyle exploiting vulnerable people and look what happened. But it continues to some extent.

I remember watching Gok Wan putting a load of women in their underwear in an empty swimming pool and hosing them down with a fire hose.

That was an early WTF? moment for me.

longwayoff · 20/09/2023 17:27

They're grim. Fashions change. You're right OP, eyebrows will raise.

I could never understand why people would agree to strut naked in front of loads of people to prove how happy they were with their body. Why would you do that? Why would you think it proved anything apart from how exploitative tv is?

parameciumparty · 20/09/2023 17:43

No, it'll get even worse. There'll be shows entitled Rate My Position, Shopping With Strap Ons and Big Boys Ride Again 🤢 where you have to watch hardcore pornography. After that, there'll be stuff with chickens, cricket bats and locking people in cages.

I don't have a telly.

I currently think WTF. Don't get me started on Jennifer Lawrence's current film because I just don't get how it's being made- I assumed for the longest time it was satire. Reality shows in general are mad, but watching young peoples lives implode on screen with copious amounts of alcohol and bad choices is heart breaking. All with the hope that your choices will be bad enough to remain popular and drive ratings but not so bad that you are cancelled and lose the make up and fast fashion contracts.

What is JLaw current film?

Look back?

I already think WTF about those shows. 🤷‍♀️

First comment nailed it

I think this is a difficult line to walk. We can be dismissive about the trash we used to watch when we were younger on with older eyes and more experience we can cringe, or be horrified. But…I’m also wary of being an old fart who starts telling young adults what they can and can’t watch, or what they are allowed to find amusing.

There should absolutely be a level of safeguarding for participants of programmes, and I think in the past people have been failed woefully. But condemning people for being participants in 90’s style “ladette culture”…it feels that there is a point you can interfere too much. Most of what youngsters enjoy feels increasingly alien to me, but is it my place to start dictating?

Just to be clear- I was condemning myself for participating in ladette culture!

I don’t understand a lot of the things my teenagers are watching but I let them have at it (I give my opinion from time to time but don’t expressly forbid anything).

Crikeyalmighty · 20/09/2023 18:35

Cheap titillating fodder sells and gets ratings. I couldn't believe first time I saw Naked Attraction- but more to the point I couldn't believe people actually put themselves on it- mind you I have noticed they are tend to be a bit lacking in the brains department.

Newphony · 20/09/2023 18:44

Naked attraction is particularly grim and should never have been aired!

TurquoiseDress · 20/09/2023 18:44

Oh my God that Kinga woman on Big Brother! Confused

I'll never forgot her outside in the garden lying on the lawn and some of the others inside the house looking on in disbelief!!

I had wished I could un-see it all...and now the memories have coming flooding back! 😵

I don't think that's it at all. I don't think the divide between who watches trash and who doesn't is really an age divide. I don't watch trash in my 50s and I didn't really when I was in my 20s (apart from a brief phase of watching a couple of soaps - but they're hardly Love Island or Naked Attraction). Lots of middle-aged people watch trash.

With regards to naked attraction, I always imagine them going back to work the next day 😂

Ap24 · 20/09/2023 18:55

Definitely. Society is constantly changing. I remember seeing clips of the black and white minstrel show as a child and being shocked that it was ever shown.

Even more recently there was that show where the presenter called families fatties and other nasty names? Even the kids got picked on.

Dominoeffecter · 20/09/2023 18:57

Thesearmsofmine · 20/09/2023 14:10

Yes I think we will( but like you I already think wtf). There is a channel 4 show where couples go into a house and have group sex/threesomes, it’s called the sexperinrnt I think. I saw a couple of episodes and it made me so uncomfortable, the ones I saw it was clearly one partner who was more into the idea and the other person kind of went along with it.

Open house

bombastix · 20/09/2023 19:03

I already think they are total crap. I assume the people who watch them are just voyeurs really. Why else would you bother?

foreverbasil · 20/09/2023 19:12

Can we add 'I'm a celebrity' to that list? Completely unfathomable why it is so popular. Z list celebrities getting sweaty and eating weird stuff. So much hype about it too...all so predictable and callous

Same! I always think that too.

These kinds of programmes have always made me feel angry, even from quite a young age. I was at a friend's house once and they were laughing hysterically at Keith Lemon, and I just couldn't understand it. It was that programme that Ferne Cotton and Holly W used to be on. One of them was pretending to give birth and I thought why on Earth did they agree to do that? Then they were both crawling around on the floor and KL was so obviously getting off on it. Appalling show.

Naked Attraction is appalling. Judging someone on their appearance naked or not, is awful. How can this be entertainment?

VictorianChic · 20/09/2023 19:23

Amazing how many people “stumbled upon” Naked Attraction though 😅
