I never butter sandwiches and I am from Lancashire 🙃

AntsMarching · 20/09/2023 12:28

We don't. I only put butter in a jam sandwich. Drives my British DH mad, but I've taught my children to eat sandwiches without butter.

dearanon · 20/09/2023 12:30

Only in certain sandwiches

gingercat02 · 20/09/2023 12:31

Neither DS or I butter sandwiches. DH does.
I would put mayonnaise in some things (tuna, prawns), coleslaw, sometimes with cheese or ham or houmous with peppers or salad.
It saves a few calories, and if the other filling is "wet" enough, it's fine

TheLuckyOnes · 20/09/2023 12:33

I never butter sandwiches, and am not American. As a pp said, mayonnaise with some fillings, hummus with some, maybe a smear of olive oil or pesto with others...

That's outrageous 😳 how are you even from Lancs? 🤣🤣

newnamethanks · 20/09/2023 12:33

I'm a butter fan. Bread, potatoes, green veg, etc all made for adding butter to. My children, and latterly grandchildren, all hate it. Olive oil or nothing for them. Weirdos.

PuppyMonkey · 20/09/2023 12:34

Absolutely shocking. Mayo doesn’t even come close to the joy of butter.

ReeseWitherfork · 20/09/2023 12:35

But they do appear to put cheese on absolutely everything

😂sorry!😂

User17439824 · 20/09/2023 12:37

I do, I spread it quite thickly, I also like it on potatoes and some veg

VanillaFlotilla · 20/09/2023 12:39

We, correctly, put butter on everything.

Aposterhasnoname · 20/09/2023 12:39

Butter on sandwiches is vile. It covers the taste of the filling. Butter should only be used on its own, on toast, crumpets or malt loaf, it is also acceptable on potatoes, but never, ever in sandwiches.

Vates · 20/09/2023 12:39

I was the odd one out in my family growing up as I hate butter in sandwiches! I can have it on toast by itself or with marmite but not anything else. It makes me feel ill when I see it mixing with things in the sandwich or on toast. Sometimes makes me think of pus.

And marshmallows.

theveryhungrybum · 20/09/2023 12:41

Always, ALWAYS put butter on a sandwich. Always.

Beezknees · 20/09/2023 12:42

I don't like butter in sandwiches. I only like it melted on toast.

Mmmm, all those sound lovely. I can certainly get their appeal. But I guess I had always thought of those as creative and delicious riffs on the basic universally accepted norm of butter in sandwiches Grin. Especially Americans with their mayonnaise. I thought that with their excellence at fast food they were just saying 'Hey! Here's a great way to switch up your usual sandwich!' I was gobsmacked to learn that they don't operate with butter as the anchoring reality of sandwiches (some butter is even called Anchor ffs Grin)

UK born and bred but have never had butter (or marg) in a sandwich.
Can't stand the stuff! 🤮

nokidshere · 20/09/2023 12:43

I butter my sandwiches, and toast. My two sons (grown up now) think a sandwich is 2 slices of bread with a piece of ham between! No butter, no Mayo etc. weird.

Discwriter · 20/09/2023 12:43

Butter on everything, even butter with peanutbutter.

Helendegenerate · 20/09/2023 12:43

The last time I bought butter or any type of spread was,er, many years ago!. I really can't remember. Toast with a thin layer of marmalade doesn't need butter and any sandwiches with tuna will have a touch of cottage cheese to stop the filling falling out. Baked potatoes don't see butter either. There are always healthier alternatives to make them delicious.

There is a jar of peanut butter in my fridge though and I have this occasionally.

NonMiDispiace · 20/09/2023 12:44

Butter stops the filling making the bread soggy, absolutely delicious too 😋

largomargo · 20/09/2023 12:44

I think it's a waste of butter unless it's a banana sandwich or chip butty. Then it's a must.

Surely mayo is tasty enough, and already high on the calorie count?

GrumpyPanda · 20/09/2023 12:44

No butter in a sandwich, if using the classical definition of two layers of bread enclosing a filling. A single piece of bread spread with butter is fine independently of whether the topping is sweet or savoury.
