Resting heart rate

If you are a fitness tracker wearing 56 year old, what is your usual resting heart rate?

A work colleague was talking about this today and theirs is a full 10 BPM lower than mine!

Not mine but 48-56 is normal for my husband who is in the age range.

skippy67 · 18/09/2023 22:44

Between 60 and 63.

Is it different for men and women or just the same do you know?

Mine is usually somewhere between 48 and 52. I'm 55. My DF also has a low heart rate, so suspect there's a hereditary element.

junebirthdaygirl · 18/09/2023 22:56

60 for me. In my 60s.
But may dd has a low one. Doctor said she could have been an elite athlete..think they have a lower one.

Mumski45 · 18/09/2023 22:58

I'm 54 and mine is around 48-50.

moggerhanger · 18/09/2023 23:01

About 50-55, but I tend to beat low. When I was much fitter it was below 50. I'm 50 years old now.

BigSwigs · 18/09/2023 23:03

I'm 43 and mine is 61 which is excellent for my age. If you google average heart rate for age there are charts. It was 68 at the start of the year but consistent exercise has bought it down.

MooFroo · 18/09/2023 23:05

Mine is between 65-75 usually

BaffledOnceAgain · 18/09/2023 23:08

I'm 46 and my is currently 53. I believe it should be at least 60 to avoid being in the low heart rate category.

hamstersarse · 18/09/2023 23:10

I'm 48 and mine is 45! Often goes below 40 when I'm asleep.

Been to docs and they were totally unconcerned and said its because I am fit.

I'm 43 and according to my garmin my resting heart rate over the last year was 53.

sadaboutmycat · 18/09/2023 23:13

I'm 60 and although I am overweight I run regularly, so 56-58

sunshineandtea · 18/09/2023 23:15

Those tables are bonkers!
I'm 43 and mine is 55-58 resting average.
I wouldn't say I'm 'fit' I try to run once a week but only 4-5k and certainly not fast (5k in 30-35 mins).

When I smoked (4+ years ago) my resting HR was much higher (about 70-75) even though I could run faster 🤷‍♀️

TriceratopsRocks · 18/09/2023 23:15

I'm 53. When exercising very regularly (last year) it was about 55-60 bpm. At the moment I'm doing very little due to 'circumstances' and it's crept up to about 65-70 bpm.

JamNittyGritty · 18/09/2023 23:18

I am 51 and mine is below 50 at rest. I am slim and move around a fair bit but don’t exercise. It had been worrying me it was so low but seeing so many similar age people giving low numbers has been very reassuring!

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 18/09/2023 23:19

The tables are for your resting heart rate, not your sleeping heart rate.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 18/09/2023 23:34

Most smart watches are a bit dumb.
They will tell you that your sleeping heart rate is your resting heart rate. Mumsnet is not full of elite athletes. Just ordinary people who are being mugged by poorly coded technology.

Sleeping heart rates are usually between 40-60 bpm.

If you want your resting heart rate, go sit on the sofa and chill for a bit, then check you heart rate.

FatandRoundBouncingontheGround · 18/09/2023 23:36

Mine is around mid sixties, 64-66. I am 53 and fat (but reasonably active).

Userwithallthenumbers · 18/09/2023 23:51

Resting heart rate should be measured when you first wake up, not after sitting on the sofa chilling for a bit.

I am 51, my RHR is often below 50. I am not an elite athlete, but I am fit for age - sub50 minute 10km fit.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 19/09/2023 00:00

The NHS and BHF suggest sitting still for 5 to 10 mins then taking a resting heart rate.

If you want to look fitter than you are, you can take your measures while asleep or still in bed but on the whole doctors are unable to do this to patients. Hence the tables available medically having higher rates than any mumsnetter.

Puffypuffin · 19/09/2023 06:53

I think it's just that I'm trying to think a bit more about my health these days and although these things are not exactly a pinpoint accurate way to determine that, I suppose it's a reasonable indicator to try to improve on the whole?

Mine is usually 50-53. It's higher at the moment because I'm fighting off a virus 😷
