Do you have any problems that wouldn't be solved by a sizeable lottery win (lighthearted!)?

...apart from serious health issues / terminal diagnoses / infertility / death of loved ones obviously, I know there isn't any amount of money that can help with some things. And that right now, the fact that none of those things apply to me make me very lucky, and I am grateful for that.

But I was just mulling over the general day to day things that are currently pissing me off / stressing me out:

Work is doing my head in atm - wouldn't have to have a job, or could have a job that I actually wanted to do without having to take ££ into consideration

Mildly twatty neighbours - would no longer be an issue as I'd have a house with a chunk of land around it

Idiot dog owners that let their off lead dogs approach my little grumpy dog who just wants to be left alone - we would just roam happily around our own land

I'm overweight and Could Do Better with exercise and diet - I'd have lots of time to plan and cook healthy dinners, get a PT, have a home gym, pool etc

Vague worries about job security etc - we are ok for money at the moment but haven't been in the past, and I'm always low level anxious about it happening again

DM getting older and more demanding - money itself won't help, but I'd have the comfort of knowing I could buy in any help she needs rather than dealing with her current expectation that I'm going to be traversing up and down the country to care for her

House being cluttered and struggling to find a place for things - we'd have a bigger house / more room

Struggling with menopause, confidence etc - I'd have the money for the best healthcare, and the time to spend on my appearance, learning new skills to boost confidence etc

I genuinely can't think of one thing where 'money can't buy you happiness' actually does apply, it might not be able to buy happiness but it would solve an awful lot of problems!

Climate change (well I suppose if I had hundreds of billions I might have more influence/ability to change some things!)

piscofrisco · 18/09/2023 13:49

All my problems could be solved or at least lessened with a sizeable lottery win.

Overweight-pay for trainer/lypo

Parents infirm and far away-could move nearer as wouldn't be tied to work and could get them carers that are reliable to help.

DSS's mum being a dick-hitman. Only joking. Afford to go back to court to get sorted.

Would also get my teeth fixed. Not a problem really but the gap that was cute On a younger woman is not so much now I'm in my 40's and I'm increasingly conscious of it.

Money doesn't make you happy. But it does help!

ManchesterLu · 18/09/2023 13:55

Most of my problems could be solved directly with money. I'm also overweight which could be helped a lot - but obviously it's ultimately down to me.

I'm in an annoying spot at the moment, usually money can make all of my worries disappear, but this time less so...

  • We have a problem with one of DD's extracurricular activities, they've changed some age boundaries which might mean she has to leave her current set up
  • Two of my friends, in a small group of 4 have really fallen out making things very challenging
  • Plus the general passage of time means the DC need me much less, and that's making me sad at the moment

Usually a few quid can make most things go away!

Mumsanetta · 18/09/2023 14:04

No. But I would need a sizeable win to make a real difference. £2m+ would help, anything else would be same problems, nicer car. Mind you, not too much though - I read that winning the lottery increases your risk of suicide. I’d take my chances with £2m-£3m but not £5m+

ricekrispi · 18/09/2023 14:04

All of my most pressing problems would be solved by a lottery win.

My bigger ones - such as my broken heart - probably wouldn't be. But I suppose it would allow me to practice some self-care including eating and sleeping well, dressing nicely etc which may help me find love again.

occa · 18/09/2023 14:07

All of the things that keep me awake at night would be solved by a hefty injection of cash. Definitely.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 18/09/2023 14:10

A lottery win would be lovely!

Health issues but a daily physio session would be amazing. I can only afford once a month/6 weeks atm. Own pool would be a plus.

My husband could retire early & have more time to enjoy life. He would love a boat & we could have sailing weekends away.

Bigger house with land for the dog to run around to his heart's content. Also employ a gardener to deal with land 😊.

Buy each child a house. Knowing they had their own home for life mortgage free would be nice. At the moment don't know if they'll ever be able to afford a mortgage (still students).

Putting the heating on in winter without thinking about it.

Ahh well . . . 😁

Minglemangle007 · 18/09/2023 14:12

Well I'd still be fat but suppose I could pay someone to follow me round and just knock chips and biscuits out of my hands.

MorrisZapp · 18/09/2023 14:15

Like most people, I could probably solve or minimise my problems by not having to work.

All that time would allow me to address all the things I'm failing at outside of my job.

AnotherDayOfSun · 18/09/2023 14:21

If fantasising about a lottery win helps you get through the day, then that's fine! But believing that you can "buy" happiness is rather childish, to be honest.

No, your problems would not be magically solved with money.

You wouldn't have a job, but you would have to manage the money, which STILL involves stress and dealing with people.

Twatty neighbours exist at all income levels.

Having money won't magically give motivation to lose weight.

Bigger house means more and bigger things. Clutter the same.

Please try to be happy through good emotional health, relationships, finding meaning, enjoying the little things, etc.

The reason this post is so harsh is because I have known people with lots of money who were NOT at all happy, but who had people close to them (or trying to get close) who ruthlessly used them, or tried to break up their relationships, just for money.

Pleaseme · 18/09/2023 14:22

Gosh yes. No more pesky work problems, or maintenance issues in the house or money problems. Private health care, physio, time to work out a trainer. I think I'd be in great shape in six months

JustFrustrated · 18/09/2023 14:33

None.

Money could literally fix all our "problems".

dontchaknow · 18/09/2023 14:43

My old mum used to say that money doesn't make you happy. But it's better to be miserable and rich than miserable and poor.
Though when you read stories about lottery winners and how their wins have changed their lives, and not for the better, I don't know.

Desecratedcoconut · 18/09/2023 14:47

All our problems live in your caveats so a lottery win would be nice but it wouldn't do any heavy lifting in fixing the big stuff. Wouldn't say no though.

ZombieBoob · 18/09/2023 14:56

Even an extra 400 a month I would be happy with not possible at current circumstances. Therapy top of the list.

But a lottery win. The things I would do would improve so so much. Teeth and would get plastic surgery so I don't feel sick everytime I'm naked. A house nearer my mum as husband wouldn't have to work.

Yep no problems that wouldn't be solved by a win.

coldcallerbaiter · 18/09/2023 15:04

Yes, one of my dc has a severe allergy to a couple of foods. We do not have money problems, but if money was no object and we multiplied what we had or doubled it, then maybe we could avoid certain situations due to exclusivity, less people around, exposures less likely to happen, but it would not be a massive difference...... I would guess that some other people with health problems might be a bit better off too for these or better care reasons

Tarantella6 · 18/09/2023 15:06

I need time more than money but if I didn't have to work, I'd have an awful lot more time!

I would get a housekeeper / cook and never set foot in the kitchen again. I reckon that would go a long way to helpful me lose weight.

Wherethewildthymeblows · 18/09/2023 15:10

I wouldnt say no to a lottery win but I know it wouldnt actually help me with a lot of my problems. You mentioned some of them in your OP. I have health issues which money couldnt solve, I face the imminent loss of loved ones. I have personal issues and family worries, none of which could be obviously solved with money. I am also rather lacking in friends. I suppose a lottery lifestyle might gain me some friends but would they be the right sort?

MidgesGirdle · 18/09/2023 15:18

I ruminate over winning the lottery far too much. But after being signed off work for my MH recently, I realised that nothing that truly upsets me in my life can be 100% solved by money. I'd probably end up making my life more complicated (owning more "stuff" to organise and more life admin in general) so I am trying to focus on just being content with what I have. I have a decent job with good pay, and people who love me.

Apparently a person's happiness increases with the amount of money they have only up to a certain point, and then it doesn't make much difference. So long as I can maintain a level of security and comfort (nothing extravagant) then I am OK. And OK is good.

megletthesecond · 18/09/2023 15:19

Almost everything would be solved by a lottery win. Even DD's mental health issues would be vastly improved by a bigger house in a pleasant area, dog, tutor, counsellor etc.

The only thing it wouldn't fix is DS's allergies. But it would allow us to travel and possibly manage his meals better.

lesten · 18/09/2023 15:43

We're financially pretty comfortable but there are things we can't just throw money at, even though we have a surplus. Our house needs decluttering and lots of odd jobs need doing, but I'm quite private and don't want someone coming in and doing that, I'd want to be in charge of it. We need a cleaner too but I hate the idea of someone coming into our home every week.

We don't get enough child-free time but I wouldn't want a nanny, I like having the bond with my DC so I just want to be there with them.

I don't have time/energy to do exercise due to looking after my dc - I have enough money to pay for a gym with creche but I guess the reason we don't do that is our schedule is pretty busy already and I don't want her to stop any of her current activities. I guess a nanny could take her to a class and I could go for a workout but then I'd just miss her (she'll start preschool in 12 months so I have put my life on hold until then really).

I'd like a bigger house/garden but it also needs to be within walking distance of school and DH's office (I suppose if we had a lottery win he wouldn't have to work). But there aren't many houses that much bigger where we are as it's central London, they just don't exist (there are a few but they are more like a Euromillions win than a lottery win, and very high maintenance).

Plusque · 18/09/2023 15:49

Alas, I’d still be in love with someone who doesn’t love me. Though I suppose I could buy an island on which to brood, if I didn’t also have an 11 year old who doesn’t fancy living in a lighthouse on an otherwise uninhabited island…

thecatsthecats · 18/09/2023 15:59

I couldn't fix my MIL's choice of husband. Well, I could with a hitman, but I assume we're not talking about murder here! Maybe I could throw a ludicrously handsome man in her direction...

Failing that though, move far far away from the rude git.
