Possible to replace oven with air fryer?

Beachdays44 · 15/09/2023 21:06

Our electric oven has stopped working - it came with the house when we bought it and so is about 17 years old. I phoned an appliance repair person and he said it was impossible to get parts for that type of oven now and it would have to be replaced. The gas top is separate to the electric oven and is working fine.

We don't have an air fryer as we are very limited with worktop space in the kitchen. I wonder is it possible to pull out the electric oven to get rid of it and somehow get an air fryer into that particular space?? Without it looking ridiculous as it is a fitted kitchen?!

Thanks for responding.

Bear in mind you can't cook liquid in an airfryer so if you any stews etc you're a big effed!

Beachdays44 · 15/09/2023 21:47

Good point but i would do stews on the hob or maybe the slow cooker (which is in cupboard but comes out every now and then).

I googled this quite extensively recently for the same reasons as you. Came to the conclusion that a fan oven is just the same as an air fryer, but much bigger.
Happy to be corrected though.

The only thing I've used my oven for since getting an air fryer is Yorkshire puddings and pizzas!

Scampuss · 15/09/2023 21:55

An air fryer is basically just a small fan oven that heats up quickly.

Probably depends on how many people you usually cook for. A large decent air fryer will probably cost as much as a new built in oven.

How will you cook Christmas dinner?

Usernamenotavailable12345678 · 15/09/2023 22:03

I bought myself Ninja 15 in one . I don’t use cooker or oven since ! Its big but cooks Soup - 6 min , ox tail stew - 35 min , rice 3 min etc . have 7,5 l capacity. Cleaning is pleasure. You can get rid of slow cooker, pans and pots with this one . Does pressure cooking, steaming, air frying, baking, dehydrating, makes even yoghurt. I see I’ve saved about 30£ this month on electricity and gas . Best thing ever

I can do a 5-6lb Turkey breast in my air fryer and it’s delicious! If it’s just my nuclear family, that’s what I do. Have to use the oven when it’s 28 people though.

GetDownkeith · 15/09/2023 22:14

Between my instant pot and air fryer I rarely use the oven now. It's definitely possible you just need a bit more planning until you're used to it.

Querypost · 15/09/2023 22:17

Maybe it wasn't a good one (Tower), but I couldn't get on with the air fryer at all... nor can a lot of people if you see how many get put on FB Marketplace and such. I just fecked mine into a skip.

Ozgirl75 · 15/09/2023 22:50

So we have a crap oven and we’re renting. I have a slow cooker and a double air fryer and I use the oven for one thing - pizza! It literally never gets switched on apart from for that one meal. Everything else gets air fried, pan fried or slow cooked.

Sgtmajormummy · 15/09/2023 22:59

I’ve had no success with baking in an air fryer. Not even individual muffin cases cook consistently and any cake would have to be 15cm diameter or less. Pizzas too.
I have made croissants and Portuguese tarts from the freezer but I wouldn’t call it baking.
Mine is a 5l Cosori, so not the smallest.

catscalledbeanz · 16/09/2023 00:07

For the vast majority of life absolutely yes. I use my oven thrice a year. Two birthday cakes and a turkey. Otherwise I'm all hob, instant pot and airfryer. If I were a regular baker I'd argue the oven is non negotiable

Hermittrismegistus · 16/09/2023 02:04

Buy a halogen oven instead. Basically like an air fryer but you can cook liquids, full size pizza in etc and it's wonderful for baking as you can see everything rise. Most have a self clean function and glass instead of horrible nonstick coating.

Came on to say this.

But we use our oven much less since we bought an air fryer.

Ihateslugs · 16/09/2023 02:35

Be careful if you are thinking of using the air fryer in the confined space where the oven was. Air fryers get very hot and need lots of ventilation space around them, they should not be used close to walls or underneath wall cupboards. They also need standing on a heat proof surface so I’m not sure how safe they would be in a wooden cupboard casing which would be left after the over in removed.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/09/2023 06:50

I use my air fryer a lot, but it's too small for pizzas and I've never successfully baked with it.

BertieBotts · 16/09/2023 07:25

I think a lot of people are missing OP's point, she's not asking whether the air fryer can replace the oven, she's asking if she can put the air fryer where the oven was, to save counter space.

I think you'd have to pull the oven out and replace with a cupboard or open shelf, then maybe, but it would be awkward to use - might be best as a cupboard and you can put all your counter top stuff (slow cooker, rice cooker, toaster etc) in there.

If you use a microwave, it might make more sense to replace the oven with a built-in microwave and use the space where your microwave is now for the air fryer?

We pull the slow cooker, rice cooker etc in a cupboard and pull out as needed but the air fryer would be too heavy/greasy to do this with and honestly I wouldn't recommend as our rice cooker has just broken and I think it's from being moved around too much.

Blueuggboots · 16/09/2023 07:28

If you got a ninja multicooker, you can use that as an airfryer, pressure cooker, slow cooker and lots more. Much more versatile than just an air fryer.
I use mine every day and I love it!!

Chasingsquirrels · 16/09/2023 07:30

Mine is in a cupboard, at worktop height, but not fitted. I pull it forward to the edge when using it.

I have the ninja grill. You can do everything in it to be honest. I've even cooked a tray bake type of meal. I can't remember the last time I used the oven.

InFiveMins · 16/09/2023 07:35

I'd say it would be fine to replace your oven with an airfryer. Get a reasonably large one and some accessories for it such as oven dishes that will fit inside. You'd perhaps find it difficult to cook pizza in it but I slice mine up and then put into airfryer so it fits. I'll never go back to using an oven again, hated cleaning it for a start!

This is the most important thing to consider.
Especially if you go for a multicooker which releases vapours during baking or after pressure cooking.
These machines need air to circulate around them and they do heat up on the outside.
You can certainly use the space currently used by your cooker as storage/shelf, but you'd need to do the actual air fryer cooking on the worktop , not while the machine is sitting on the shelf.

Still a lot of people not reading all the way through the OP’s post.

LouLou198 · 16/09/2023 08:01

Between my slow cooker and air fryer it is very rare that I use the oven now. Unless you like to bake a lot I think you could manage without.
