Fur - Yay or Nay?

I've always liked fur clothing, and hope to one day own a full coat, probably mink as its more sustainable. I've been lucky to inherit some small pieces (fox and rabbit) owned by my grandmother, they are very precious to me, as well as some hats and gloves bought abroad made of rabbit fur.

I always get mixed reactions when I express my love of furs. Older people tend to be accepting of fur whereas younger generations I've found are very anti-fur. In countries like Italy its very common to see gentry dressed in their furs all through Winter, its the norm, whereas other places seem to foster great stigmatism towards it.

Don't get me wrong, I love animals. I've had pets of every kind throughout my life (snakes, lizards, cats, dogs, spiders, mice, guinea pigs, tortoises, chipmunks, fish, stick insects, chickens.....to name a few!). I'm a meat-lover too. People assume I hate animals because I wear fur and eat meat. I don't hate animals, but I won't turn down a good steak or pass up a good bargain on some fur.

Just looking for some opinions on the subject.

It's lovely - on the animal it belongs to.

Continuing to use old fur clothing makes sense in a way... they already exist, so at least using them to their full potential makes it more "worthwhile" as the production can't be undone.same with using skins etc that are the byproduct of food production.

Creation of new clothing... no. There are alternatives now.

I'm not a massive fan of fur - just not my style - but I really worry about the environmental impact of fake fur. All those tiny plastic hairs! I actively avoid fake fur for that reason, whereas I might consider a secondhand genuine fur if (unusually) I saw something I liked.

AnnaMagnani · 13/09/2023 12:00

Having seen a mink farm - relatives ran one - I would never wear a mink coat.

The conditions they are kept in are horrific.

MasterCherry · 13/09/2023 12:01

I should add, presumably you're not talking about anything endangered?!

It's probably mainly from the dalmatians she can kidnap...

VeridicalVagabond · 13/09/2023 12:05

I wouldn't buy it new, I think vintage is alright. I don't like how it looks though.

I inherited a vintage 1920's fur coat from my great grandmother, it's very Cruella DeVille but I've only worn it once... to a Halloween party where I went as Cruella. It has since been wrapped and bagged and put in storage.

KingsHeath53 · 13/09/2023 12:06

I agree fur looks and feels lovely.

However the conditions the animals are kept in and killed are so cruel as to be totally unjustifiable.

I’m ok with leather which is a byproduct of the meat industry and I eat meat and support none of the animal going to waste.

But minks aren’t used for meat they are killed just for their fur.

Secondhand I think is a bit more justifiable as you aren’t giving any money to the fur industry. If I inherited a fur coat i’d look into getting it re cut into a modern style though it’s really hard to find a person who can do this

MrsSlocombesCat · 13/09/2023 12:23

You might like animals but you don’t care about them. There’s a difference. The former is a selfish thing, you like animals that are pleasant to look at or keep as pets. It’s all about you, not the animal.

This. Fur is awful.

givemushypeasachance · 13/09/2023 12:59

How is mink fur "more sustainable" - more sustainable than what?

And I note sustainable, as in the production can be maintained at the same level rather than it being a product that is being used up like fossil fuels, is not the same as ethical.

CatamaranViper · 13/09/2023 13:00

It absolutely stinks when wet, it's impractical to wash and maintain, and I wouldn't wear it.
Wearing fur of the animals you eat is different. Wearing vintage furs is a bit different as well.

slavetothekittens · 13/09/2023 13:05

Fur is only beautiful on the animal it belongs to.

100% no.

Suggest asking if there is a theatre nearby who could use them for authenticity in some plays.

Helenahandkart · 13/09/2023 13:34

You should also get some lampshades made of human skin. Go the whole hog.

Flickersy · 13/09/2023 13:34

Yay as long as it's vintage, or humanely obtained as a by-product under strict conditions (e.g. bear fur from the annual licenses they issue in the US, rabbit fur from pest control / food).

Nay to fur farms and endangered species.

StillWantingADog · 13/09/2023 13:36

Nope. I’d keep stuff which had sentimental value (if it did) but generally speaking I wouldn’t want any in my house and would certainly never wear out and about.

it was 20 years ago but in Poland it was common to see winter coats made entirely out of what was very clearly animal skin. I remember being quite taken aback at the time.!

Brefugee · 13/09/2023 13:38

2nd hand fur , if it's properly old? Less of an issue.
Anything made since 1980?get to fuck 😁

No different to leather, yet most people aren't up in arms about that.

Big no from me on all animal skins.

And no, you don't love animals if you wear them and eat them. Hypocritical in the extreme.

HippoWater · 13/09/2023 13:41

Watch an animal get skinned alive for their fur and then form an opinion.....

It is absolutely vile and unnecessary.

Flickersy · 13/09/2023 13:44

I’m ok with leather which is a byproduct of the meat industry

That's not completely true - some leather is a by product of the meat industry. In other cases it's a co-product (i.e. the animals are raised for the hides just as much as the meat) and in others still animals are raised purely for the hides. It depends on the quality and type of leather needed.
