i read this today and must say i had no idea of the scale of financial stuff going on.

www.spectator.co.uk/article/the-perverse-greed-of-jamie-oliver-2/

i think i feel angry as i've spent my entire working life in Newham and can see how poor many children are there.
It is shocking how he presents himself as this do goofing crusader but his dealings with small businesses and local councils have been so shady .
i feel angry with myself for having fallen for his nonsense.

It seems a bit of an overreaction to get cross with yourself about a random chef/person/celebrity.

Who actually cares about Jamie Oliver? You can't believe everything you read on the interweb.

Her name is not Julie. If you are going to criticise her, at least get her name right!

What is Julie Burchill's name then? If not Julie?

Lwrenagain · 13/09/2023 16:53

@MinnieTruck I was pretty much team Jamie until I learnt that news, now I'm leading the revolution to have him ended 😂😂

Government guidance on school meals. Nothing about a total ban on salt and sugar and no mention of JO.

Foods high in fat, sugar and salt

Foods from this group are often high in energy (calories) but provide few other nutrients.

Reducing saturated fat intake can help reduce the risk of heart disease. Eating unsaturated fats instead, which are found in foods such as oily fish, nuts and seeds, and sunflower and olive oils, can help lower blood cholesterol.

Too much salt can encourage a taste for salty foods, potentially leading to high blood pressure in later life.

High sugar intake provides unnecessary calories and can lead to weight gain and tooth decay.

You should include:

no more than 2 portions of food that have been deep-fried, batter-coated, or breadcrumb-coated, each week (applies across the whole school day)
no more than 2 portions of food which include pastry each week (applies across the whole school day)
savoury crackers or breadsticks, which can be served at lunch with fruit, vegetables or dairy food
desserts, cakes and biscuits but they must not contain any confectionery
You should avoid:

snacks, except nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruit with no added salt, sugar or fat (applies across the whole school day)
confectionery, chocolate or chocolate-coated products (applies across the whole school day)

You must not provide salt to add to food after it has been cooked (applies across the whole school day).

Any condiments must be limited to sachets or portions of no more than 10 grams or one teaspoonful (applies across the whole school day).

You can:

choose mono- and poly-unsaturated fats, such as rapeseed, soya, sunflower and olive oils, wherever possible for cooking or salad dressings
avoid products that list partially hydrogenated fat or oil on the label
use higher fibre ingredients, such as wholemeal flour, in addition to, or instead of, white flour
reduce the amount of sugar used in dishes

Edited

Seems sensible.

Wolvesart · 13/09/2023 10:33

So this article is in the right wing Spectator and written by the notoriously vicious Julie Burchill. Too much slant to be taken at face value.

Jamie isn’t a saint but praps not as much of a sinner as she makes out

This.

Julie B is a nasty woman who has made a career of having unpleasant opinions and spats.

Talltall · 13/09/2023 17:08

@orangelotus

bery one sided and mainly BS

suppliers should have receivables insurance for deals. I do

re the councils it's will be business rates so with our they they would have got none

ita very often the case when a business closes

he is a force for good

IClaudine · 13/09/2023 17:18

Bulie Jurchill?

Oh fuck sorry! I thought you were on about Joolz. Total brain fail. I agree about Julie B.

ForeverbyJudyBlume · 13/09/2023 17:20

@memote It clearly would have been an easier life if JO had kept his money, enjoyed it, done nothing to help others - look at the vitriol he attracts on threads like this. Perhaps he gets a buzz out of doing good, should we say anyone who does anything helpful should stfu because they might enjoy it?

I didn't read the article because I hate Julie B.😬😳

theresnolimits · 13/09/2023 17:38

I’ve met JO and know his dad through his pub. They are just ordinary people- it’s not a front and if you remember he got his break in that River Cafe programme where he just stood out as being an enthusiastic young cook. Maybe he has maintained/exaggerated that persona but it’s not ‘fake’.

He put school meals and processed food on the agenda. Whether you like him or not, he started a conversation that everyone is now having about over processed food. It was long overdue.

Is he a businessman? Probably not and he put his name to restaurants that didn’t deliver. Has he done anything deliberately illegal - no. A lot of naïvety I think.

Does he write a bloody good cookbook and has he tried to demystify recipes (30 mins or 5 ingredients- yes).

If you want to blame anyone for the sugar tax, blame those companies who put sugar into everything and got us all addicted at terrible cost to our health. It’s just like the tobacco lobby.

And who were the organisations that let his companies run up so much debt? Where was the due diligence?

Those adverts where he was cooking for his mates back at the start of his career? Total bollocks. Our best man was in them, through a casting agency.

Like nigella having her mates over? It's tv!

Lol. I always assumed they were her mates. Until 2 minutes ago.

Never occurred to me that they were paid extras. 🤣🤣🤣🤪🤪🤪

EarlGreywithLemon · 13/09/2023 17:44

@Thesoundofscience Sugar is bad for you, and has zero nutritional value whereas butter and cream are very good for you in moderation.

^This. Give me real butter and cream any day over sugar. I'm happy to feed my children strawberries and cream or toast or baked potatoes with butter, and I do regularly. Fizzy drinks? Nope, no way. Water is fine.

wincarwoo · 13/09/2023 17:48

LlynTegid · 13/09/2023 11:16

His mockney accent is fake for starters.

He's got an Essex accent

Livinginanotherworld · 13/09/2023 17:52

Ftumch · 13/09/2023 12:41

Rubbish. You can buy whatever you want. All major brands still sell full sugar versions.

Not true, most 'full sugar' soft drinks also contain sweeteners now to avoid the sugar tax. The only mainstream pop that doesn't now is full sugar coke. Some of the more expensive brands sell drinks without sweeteners but even those ar staring to add Stevia 🤢

Edited

Yes that’s absolutely true, apart from full fat coke, there’s hardly anything now without that ghastly artificial taste. Even Fentimans and Belvoir have gone down that route. I blame him entirely for the bloody sugar tax ! Aspartame gives me horrendous migraines and the other substitutes taste like crap.

FancyFanny · 13/09/2023 17:52

It seems MN like to tear down anyone who is successful- in my eyes he's made his own success, so if he's loaded then it's because he made it happen! Quite what he's done that makes him fake is a mystery to me?

IcedPurple · 13/09/2023 17:54

cocksstrideintheevening · 13/09/2023 17:39

Like nigella having her mates over? It's tv!

I remember some people being disappointed to find out that the kitchen used in Nigella's TV programmes is a studio set, not her actual kitchen.

All of these cookery programmes are about selling us a fantasy of some sort, just as much if not more as they are about showing us how to cook a new dish.

newnamethanks · 13/09/2023 17:55

Fair summary @rockingbird, how do you think Ms Burchill fits in there? Lots of sniggering going on I guess. Fortunately she has the hide of a rhinoceros and the sensitivity of Homer Simpson so it probably doesn't bother her, if she notices it.

Simonjt · 13/09/2023 18:02

KingsHeath53 · 13/09/2023 12:28

Rubbish. You can buy whatever you want. All major brands still sell full sugar versions. No one is forcing anyone to be healthy or cut sugar. In fact the NHS is paying gazillions for insulin to pharma companies so people can exercise their free will to gorge themselves to death with sugar until diabetes rots their legs off and they don’t have to pay a penny for any of their treatment because it’s all provided for by the taxpayer.

But yeah moan away that being advised feeding kids a diet of rubbish which kills them is curbing your human rights 🙄

As a type one diabetic there are far fewer glucose based drinks, not only that, but the few glucose based ones were more expensive. Where I live now sweeteners aren’t king, so I can now buy glucose based lucozade.

EarlGreywithLemon · 13/09/2023 18:02

Nothing is stopping the fizzy drinks companies from producing drinks which are less sweet. They don't, and add sweeteners instead, to give us the intense sweetness hit that keeps us hooked to their products.

I have a vested interest in this because I don't drink alcohol, but I also don't want to consume artificial sweeteners, AND I try to have minimal added sugar. On a day to day basis I drink only water, but as a treat on social occasion I'd love a less sweet non alcoholic drink, perhaps using fruit juice. But there aren't many of those around.

DickingAboutWithAubergines · 13/09/2023 18:08

Like the spectator gives a shite about WC kids😂. As an aside, I've never understood the mockney thing as JO definitely has an Essex accent. Off topic but Danny Dyer is often called a mockney too but he was born in Canning Town which was within the sound of bow bells once a upon a time so probably a genuine cockney. Also in defence of Nigella, her 'friends' in her shows appear to be long standing friends as I've seen them interacting on other platforms - Twitter etc over a number of years.
