curdled milk all the time, anyone else?

recently we've had lots of milk go off before its use by date. We buy the four pint bottles of semi skimmed and it's often curdled before the date on bottle. Anyone else had this?

Yes, a couple of times , and it was full fat cravendale. Was off two weeks before the date and before it had even been opened.

conversely we’ve also had milk recently that was perfectly fine nearly a week after the date (co op semi skimmed). Weird but now automatically do a sniff test every time I use milk.

I just went to steam some skimmed milk for my coffee and discovered it had curdled. The use by date is 28 Sept! Only bought from Marks & Spencer on Fri (15th). Grrr. So black coffee it is.

We've had this a few times lately with Tesco skimmed milk. DH thought they'd changed the bottles in some way (maybe to reduce plastic??) and this had affected temperature? I don't know. Definitely annoying.

We have Tesco milk at work and the milk frequently smells and tastes of the plastic, a horrible burnt smell

Yep!! My Tesco milk. 2 bottles dated 23rd (this was on the 15th)
One was already opened, curdled in my tea. Opened the sealed one, curdled again!

The BB4 dates are very long nowadays. I don’t think that helps either. Fresh milk should probably be used within a week really.

But I’ve avoided buying Tesco milk lately unless I absolutely have no choice.

Happened to me several times lately and I know my fridge is cold enough.

Me too. Thought it was just me

Mine has gone off a lot recently and I'm a chef so I'm always careful with fridge temps.
I've noticed in lots of supermarkets though that there's cafes of milk left hanging around waiting to be put into the fridge's so it's probably not helping!

I have found over the last 4 or 5 weeks that milk has gone off far quicker than it used to. I read on Tesco website review that someone attributed it to the type of plastic that is now being used since they changed the bottle tops to white. I have now complained to Tesco via Resolver and am awaiting a reply. I've looked on Sainsbury's website and there are a couple of other reports of milk going off quickly. I hasten to add my fridge is set at the correct temperature according to manufacturer and 4 pints of milk in my household only take about 3 days to use anyway as we drink so much of it/put in porridge/tea etc.

Heartbreaktuna · 12/10/2023 13:13

Yes I thought it was the fridge. But switched to cravendale and now no issues

PuttingDownRoots · 12/10/2023 13:17

Had it a few times. And other bottles which are fine past date.

The worst was the coffee DD made me without realising... lumpy coffee wasn't pleasant!

plumtreebroke · 12/10/2023 13:30

No problem with Tesco four pint semi-skimmed here. I lie them down on the lowest shelf until opened. Tried that with Sainsburys and they leaked everywhere so definitely not fully sealed, but they didn't go off prematurely, just a horrible mess! Our fridge runs fairly cold.

Catsmere · 13/10/2023 02:35

Used to get that a lot with 3L bottles kept in a very cold fridge. Now I use Aldi long-life milk milk that's only in 1L cartons. It sits on the shelf until I put it in the fridge and gets used in a day, so no danger of it going off.

NeunundneunzigHorseBallonz · 13/10/2023 04:33

I live in Aus and was told by a maternity nurse that the fridge door is inconsistent when it comes to keeping the temperature. I love the idea of milk bags like they have in Canada. You could keep unopened ones in the drawer.

punnetofcherries · 13/10/2023 09:47

OMG me too! The last three bottles of milk I've bought (all from different shops) have curdled badly a few days before their use by date!

SleepingStandingUp · 13/10/2023 09:49

Am I the only one who's be looking for hex bags and the like? Isn't curdled milk a thing witches do? Who have you upset?

Wiccan · 13/10/2023 09:58

My fridge temp is fine & Ive been practicing for years hence the user name . But our milk has been curdling the last 6 months . I think the milk is older than sell by states . Same with fruit and veg rotting. Everything is just shit quality now.
