curdled milk all the time, anyone else?

viviscool · 13/09/2023 07:36

recently we've had lots of milk go off before its use by date. We buy the four pint bottles of semi skimmed and it's often curdled before the date on bottle. Anyone else had this?

Nope. Get full fat and no issues

gogomoto · 13/09/2023 11:44

No but I did turn my fridge down in May as always, set at 3 degrees for summer

Treaclewell · 13/09/2023 11:55

Interesting to compare. I have UHT to use in my bedroom for breakfast. No fridge there and stored at ambient in shop. It usually lasts two days after opening, but the other day it came out curdled on the second day. The flavour was rather nice, less acid than yogurt, but I chucked it to be safe. It has never happened before, and we have had no thunderstorms.

It's dated next April.

Turn your fridge up during hot months. We used to have this problem, but this year we turned the fridge up a little and haven't lost one bottle.

Only two of us use milk, so a 4pt bottle stays in fridge all week.- there's some left with today's date on and it was absolutely fine this morning.

ScarlettSunset · 13/09/2023 12:11

I've had this. I always buy either the 'filtered' supermarket milk or cravendale. More expensive initially but works out cheaper as it's not going off the day after I bought it.

Honeyroar · 13/09/2023 12:28

I’m glad you posted this, I was about to throw my fridge out! I’ve had loads of lost bottles of milk because they’ve curdled long before their best before date. Tesco’s is the worst culprit, and the coop. It happens more in one of my fridges though (which is on its coldest setting), so that may be a factor too. I have a café and it’s costing me a lot of money (I do a lot of lattes and milkshakes).

Honeyroar · 13/09/2023 12:29

It seems to be the semi skimmed that goes. The full fat seems ok, which baffles me too!

RampantIvy · 13/09/2023 12:31

No, but I buy lactose free milk.

PortalooSunset · 13/09/2023 18:25

The supermarket delay thing makes sense I think. We tend to get ours from the electric cow in the village and each bottle is a litre. Not had any of that go off, but a non-filtered supermarket one did.

minipie · 13/09/2023 18:37

the electric cow in the village

The what?? I’m a Londoner and my mind is boggling

PortalooSunset · 13/09/2023 20:10

Ha! It's the family name for the milk vending machine, like in the picture below. Local really well looked after cows make v tasty milk!

Yes milk and other "chilled" products like cut ham and prawns.
Probably like others have said it's supply chain problems or someone is lying about how long they have the milk before it's packaged.
Or staffing/shelving issues.
Everytime I have been to Sainsburys lately they have been manically stocking the shelves around the shoppers like it's Christmas.

greenacrylicpaint · 13/09/2023 20:25

we had an issue with a big brand last year (in forrin). milk was curdled even in the sealed bottle well before the best before date.
turned out to be an issue in the processing plant and the milk was off the shelves for a few months.

QuestionableMouse · 13/09/2023 20:27

EbiRaisukaree · 13/09/2023 08:45

Try switching to smaller bottles, so you use them up more quickly once opened? We use two-pint bottles, and never have this problem.

I picked a two pint bottle up from a different shop to my usual and it had turned when I went to use it the next morning 🤮

Yes it's been happening to me this summer (before the mini heatwave), I've had to throw away loads that weren't opened but still in date. The majority were from Sainsburys but had a couple from Co-Op too.

My local Sainsburys has been appalling for milk for YEARS. It always goes off far too quickly. I've given up complaining as they do nothing to change things. I don't have this problem when I buy milk from ANYWHERE else (including other branches of Sainsburys). It's the worst branch of Sainsburys I've ever been in but unfortunately it's the only big supermarket nearby (literally across the street) so at times, it's hard to avoid.

justasking111 · 13/09/2023 20:31

We have a fridge in the kitchen and one in the garage. We've set them colder but for the last few months semi skimmed has been off. In the heatwave I noticed, wine, coke in the door was warmer so put the milk on shelves. It's made no difference. In the salad drawer, peppers, lettuce are going off/mouldy so fast. I'm on day 5 of what I suspect is salmonella. I suspect that it was the salad lettuce. It was the only uncooked thing I ate. I had a packet of corned beef in date gave a slice to the dog WHO had a very bad tummy all night.

saraclara · 13/09/2023 20:32

I went through a phase like this. Bought a fridge thermometer and discovered that ithe fridge simply wasn't cold enough, nor could it get cold enough even on its coldest setting. Bought a new fridge, no problems since

And we have Milk from the Hills locally.

Straight from our farm in xxxxx, dispensed through a milk vending machine.
Gently pasteurised and non-homogenised.
Provided in sustainable, refillable glass bottles.
Just like milk should be.

I use lactose free milk so I don't buy this milk, but if I could use normal milk this is what I would buy.

BucketofTeaMassiveCake · 17/09/2023 09:33

I had this last year, so badly I had to throw out at least four bottles of milk before the use by date. I learned that there are two ways to help prevent this.

  1. Stop putting your milk in the door of the fridge - it is the warmest place. Rearrange things so that the milk is on the bottom shelf and as far away from the door as possible. Yes, this is a nuisance at first but you get used to it and it's worth the effort.
  2. Buy 'Fresher for Longer' if it's available in your area. It does indeed, do as it says, but still be vigilant.

I have no issues keeping my milk in the door. However I drink full fat and from reading the comments. Only happens to semi skimmed.

IwishIdidntlikesugar · 17/09/2023 09:56

My full fat milk went off before the expiry date last week. Smell was fine but curdled when heated in microwave. Its the first time in age’s I’ve had to throw milk away. I assumed it was my fridge so I switched it off for a while to defrost/check fan then turned the dial to make it a bit colder. If you don’t keep the milk in the door how do you stop it from leaking when its open on its side?

Toddlerteaplease · 17/09/2023 09:56

Check your fridge!

CynicalUsee · 17/09/2023 10:00

It's because of supermarket understaffing. Lots of cold/frozen items are left on the shop floor, unrefrigerated for long periods of time. I have noticed the results of it with a lot of meat products I buy.

YouNeverCanTellWithBees · 17/09/2023 10:07

We've had this a few times lately with Tesco skimmed milk. DH thought they'd changed the bottles in some way (maybe to reduce plastic??) and this had affected temperature? I don't know. Definitely annoying.
