Had wisdom tooth out at 5pm - now in agony

Took codydramol and ibuprofen at 6pm.

Lower right tooth, was badly decayed and came out in three bits.

I’m in agony to the point it’s making me feel sick. It took 40 minutes to get the tooth out in total - all of that time the dentist drilling/pulling. Was a specialist oral surgery centre. Ended up woozy in the surgery and was given some sort sugary/salty thing to drink a couple of times.

Dental surgeon said I’m likely to end up with a black eye tomorrow and a bit of bruising around jaw /face and possibly some pain into my neck.

I’m in tears it’s so sore. I can’t open my mouth properly and am still numb across bits of my face/most of my chin/bottom teeth.

Is there anything I can do tonight to ease it?

Ring 111.

Swearwolf · 12/09/2023 21:04

If you can get to a pharmacy for some clove oil, that really helps.

shesamadam · 12/09/2023 21:04

My wisdom tooth removal was honestly worse than my c section. I could only open my mouth about 3cm for a week after. I sympathise. I was off work for a whole week.

I’m on hold to them yeah, been told it’s a 45 minute wait. I’m almost counting down the minutes until I can take another dose of paramol. I’ve had dental surgery twice before and don’t remember it being agony like this, but was discharged home with dihydrocodeine and stronger ibuprofen. This is hell.

I hope you manage to sort something. My wisdom tooth pain was worse than giving birth in my opinion

Oh God, I don’t work but I’m a student and due to attend mandatory ‘beginning of semester’ stuff tomorrow. Don’t have the choice to not attend. I’m hoping as it’s just beginning of term I can sit at the back and stay fairly quiet! It’s so bloody sore it’s unreal.

Gosh whatever you don’t go over the time you should take the meds. So if they are every 4 hours, take at 3hrs 45 minutes.
if they wear off they’ll have to work very hard to get on top of the pain. So make sure they stay in your system.
Honestly I think you need to forget uni tomorrow unless it’s online. And even then I’m not sure.
sorry OP. Hope it improves quickly.

ifindyouveryattractive · 12/09/2023 21:28

NHS 24 answered - said it’s probably to be expected, nothing anyone can do tonight other than cold compress, another dose of meds before bed, and staying semi upright if possible. Said if still bad tomorrow to ring dentist and ask about stronger analgesia but said unfortunately it will be sore.

Will see how I’m feeling re uni, at the moment I couldn’t imagine going in at all but I’ll see what it’s like in the morning.

So much sympathy OP. I had a much simpler removal and the pain was BRUTAL. Agree that not allowing the painkillers to wear off is a good idea. I went back to my dental surgery for a clove dressing which did help. Give them a ring tomorrow. It will get better. But take it easy and be kind to yourself.

2old4thisshit · 12/09/2023 21:51

Anbesol was a god send, it’s a liquid you put on your finger and place on the gum. It has antiseptic and anaesthetic in it. Numbs your gum. Get it from the chemist.

Titsywoo · 12/09/2023 21:52

If you have a pack of peas wrap them in a tea towel and hold to your face - should dull the pain a bit.

You need corticosteroids! This is the magic bullet that dentists and NHS inexplicably never prescribe. DH is a dental surgeon and did my lower wisdom tooth surgery (fairly rough one with lots of bone removal). He gives his patients steroids, painkillers and antibiotics. They play almost equal parts in reducing pain. The steroids greatly reduce swelling and inflammation which is what causes so much pain. I got a single dose of methylprednisolone 40mg immediately after the op and had virtually no pain for the first 24 hrs.

The jaw swelling tends to get worse on days 2-3, but I found the pain tolerable. If you're still in agony, ask for something to reduce the swelling and possibly also antibiotics which helps your body fight off infection that could also be contributing to swelling. Don't overdo the pain medication, there are other effective ways to manage it.

Frozen peas that is!

OCaroLiner · 12/09/2023 21:56

Higher education person here. I would consider contacting your university tomorrow and asking if you can defer your assessment. Where I work we would deal with your case sympathetically.

floofbag · 12/09/2023 21:56

I had one out recently and it was fine. Hardly any pain . Get it checked

specialk9 · 12/09/2023 22:18

You poor thing. Like others wisdom tooth removal has been the most painful thing I have endured (and have had 3 c sections).

Set an alarm for your meds through the night and keep on top of them. I found within 24 hours the intense pain had eased quite considerably but I took meds religiously for around 3 days.

Hope it passes quickly for you

ifindyouveryattractive · 13/09/2023 02:11

Awake with pain so severe I’m shaking - but if I take paracetomal just now that means I can only take one dose during the day tomorrow. Have taken ibuprofen. Am wondering if my surgery would prescribe plain dihydrocodeine for even just tomorrow.

RE moving classes, unfortunately I can’t as I start placement on Monday. The first hour I really need to go to, the second hour I’m less sure and I’m praying the last two hours I can get away with not attending as it’s more of a social thing - full course ‘welcome back’ but I don’t know. Can’t stop shaking just now.

I’m awake with toothache causing entire half-of-head pain, you have my every sympathy. Can you saltwater rinse? Every hour would help get you through the night.

coxesorangepippin · 13/09/2023 02:33

You have my every sympathy

A lot of people on here recommend cloves - might be a try before you can get something stronger?

ifindyouveryattractive · 13/09/2023 02:33

Oh God poor you [hugs]. Not allowed til 5pm tonight in case I cause a dry socket. I’ve managed to have another ice lolly, and currently alternating between sucking on a block of ice cubes/holding it on my face. That’s helping a little in that I can open my mouth slightly more than I could when first woke up 40 mins ago.

I’ll see if Tesco sell cloves via whoosh in the morning yeah. Definitely haven’t got any in the house sadly.

Oh you poor thing. Dental /jaw pain is one of the most painful pains I've ever experienced.

If you do go into uni tomorrow, write a note and go show it to the lecturer before the session starts. Just letting them know your situation and that you can't contribute vocally. Please do this instead of pushing through trying to speak etc.

Facial bruising etc isn't standard so do try and assess your situation objectively as to whether you should attend.

Try heat or cold or alternate both.

Hope you have a speedy recovery

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 13/09/2023 03:04

Oh I see you were recommended cold specifically so forget the heat recommendation. Sorry I can't work out how to edit on the app.

Sounds like you're having a rough time. Wrap up if you're cold. Xxx
