Had wisdom tooth out at 5pm - now in agony

Took codydramol and ibuprofen at 6pm.

Lower right tooth, was badly decayed and came out in three bits.

I’m in agony to the point it’s making me feel sick. It took 40 minutes to get the tooth out in total - all of that time the dentist drilling/pulling. Was a specialist oral surgery centre. Ended up woozy in the surgery and was given some sort sugary/salty thing to drink a couple of times.

Dental surgeon said I’m likely to end up with a black eye tomorrow and a bit of bruising around jaw /face and possibly some pain into my neck.

I’m in tears it’s so sore. I can’t open my mouth properly and am still numb across bits of my face/most of my chin/bottom teeth.

Is there anything I can do tonight to ease it?

Have a chat to a pharmacist or the dentist about ibuprofen. I am sorry I don't have the dosage but I alternated paracetamol and 400mg ibuprofen as the packets advised for a wisdom tooth and it wasn't enough. After the dentist said I could have taken 200mg of extra ibuprofen as a bridge between doses to keep the 24 hour cover without peaks and troughs but never gave me a dosing schedule so I never understood what they meant! A pharmacist may be able to tell you not just what to take but when if there's more you can do. If you eat eggs, softly scrambled with cheese and soup was my diet for a few days. Good luck and speedy healing!

Although it sounds like your removal was particularly brutal it might be worth looking up 'dry root'. I thought I was being a baby but went back to dentist after a couple of days and was told I had dry root and the socket was packed with gauze and clove oil. Hope you get some help and sleep.

shesamadam · 13/09/2023 06:18

I think another issue is that you can barely eat and are taking loads of painkillers on an empty stomach. I couldn't open my mouth up wide enough to eat properly and the medication on an empty stomach made me feel so sick.

Have had to call in sick to uni. Feeling absolutely rotten. I’m on bisoprolol tablets too and suspect because I’m not eating they’re hitting me too strong, as my pulse is a bit slower than usual (between 50-65). GP ringing me at 2 to see if I need stronger pain relief. And yep not eating is definitely not helping at all.

Oh god, I’m having two out soon and am dreading it.

ifindyouveryattractive · 13/09/2023 17:59

It’s bearable, just make sure you have soft foods - if you can eat, all I’ve had since 12 noon yesterday is ice lollies and a microwavable pizza as not hungry or interested in eating at all … and take time off work/study if you can for at least the first day. Holding a block of ice wrapped in a tea towel was very soothing last night. That and the strongest painkillers you can get your hands on.

Glad you rang in. Did you get stronger tablets

You probably mean dry socket, that doesn’t present until a few days after surgery. Unfortunately, this sounds like plain old post operative pain, although at the very severe end of the scale.

Hopefully OP is doing a bit better, sounds awful. I would alway caution against putting ANYTHING on the socket except very gentle rinses with salt water. Disturbing the socket is one of the biggest causes of dry socket. Ideally you want the clot to sit there undisturbed for as long as possible, even if it means compromising on keeping the other molars clean (i.e toothbushing). They won’t suffer from a few days.

historyrepeatz · 13/09/2023 18:44

@Silverdogblue ah yes I'd never heard of it before and I probably did what you cautioned against with over rinsing as I was worried about keeping it all clean.

afaloren · 13/09/2023 19:33

Oh OP I’m so sorry you’re suffering like this. After I had my wisdom teeth out I genuinely thought I might die from the pain. I don’t have kids but several people told me it’s worse than the pain they went through in childbirth. Can you swill some warm salt water around your mouth? Or I found one of those microwave heat bags pressed against my jaw gave me some relief.

When I asked the dental nurse why nobody had warned me about the pain she said, ‘Because you would have backed out.’ !!!

LaffTaff · 13/09/2023 19:40

I wept for a good 2 or 3 days with the pain from wisdom tooth removal. It will ease, just keep telling yourself that, and gubbing as many painkillers as allowed in the meantime! I bitterly regretted having it removed during the recovery, but now I'm very glad I got it removed.

Hope things are improving for you now @ifindyouveryattractive
Wondering about arnica for the bruising?
@VeloVixen I had mine out 20 years ago and went to a drinks party the next evening so not all experiences are as bad as this.

I took a week.off work after having mine out under GA, went 'home's to my mum & she blended my food for me so.i.could eat (the one meal.I can remember was salmon, mash & cheese sauce because it was a lovely pale pink 😆) could be worth trying if you're still.not eating

A bit - had a shower and eaten a bit. Slept through the night thankfully. Going to bed within the next couple of hours as absolutely exhausted. Hoping tomorrow is easier, I need to go out twice in the morning and again in the afternoon.

Sounds like you have dry socket. Have you used a straw or smoked or drank anything hot since the extraction?

This will not go away so you need to go back to your dentist asap. If you get back quickly enough he can prick it so it bleeds again and the blood clot reforms. If not it will have to be packed every couple of days for a few weeks until it heals enough to cover the exposed socket.

Anickasmidden · 14/09/2023 19:39

Dry socket doesn’t present this quickly. Just takes time unfortunately. Don’t wait till painkillers wear off keep taking the max dose. Gentle rinse with hot salty water from tomorrow.

Balloonhearts · 14/09/2023 19:49

Dry socket presents as quickly as you lose the clot. Highest risk is first 4 days. I have hypodontia so several extractions of strangely positioned teeth.

SomeCatFromJapan · 14/09/2023 19:50

I had my bottom two wisdom teeth cut out under sedation and the pain afterwards was quite something. Nurofen Plus, the one with the codeine, really helped me as I don't seem get much relief from paracetamol. I did feel a hell of a lot better by the next day. Very stiff and tender but no longer excruciating.

It really doesn’t present so quickly. Source - retired dentist. Taken out thousands of teeth over my career!

It’s more pain in the stitches and my jaw bone that’s sore, that and I’m still slightly bradycardiac so lightheaded/woozy on my feet (HR sitting at around 55-60 -
normal is 75-80). Not sure it’s a dry socket as when I’m taking the painkillers the pain is going, it’s just if I don’t I’m almost banging head against the wall. Plus there’s not much of a socket there iyswim - just 3 or 4 stitches in my gum.
