Very thankful it's on the other side of the glass! But also pretty cool to see, looks like two sacs there ?

Loofahs lol who said they had to be called that ?

It was a bit odd. Grin

DyslexicPoster · 13/09/2023 22:01

I have these, they poop down my window! If it was a false widow it would be staying in the house with me.

I'd not keep the nest either. House spider are worse enough but at least they don't do any harm.

WithIcePlease · 13/09/2023 22:07

While the spider people are on, is this a false widow?

They don't need help they are the fastest growing spider across eu.

BirdiePlantaganet · 13/09/2023 22:11

Love all the spiders. We have a couple of whoppers in our house at the moment that we've got quite fond of. One in a bathroom that hides behind the bath when the light goes on.

Franny and Zooey was the wanky basket poster btw.

Zippedydoodahday · 13/09/2023 22:11

I feel like a fool as I can't for the life of me see the spider in that photo

ThunderCloudsinSumer · 13/09/2023 22:13

@WithIcePlease no that' looks like a normal garden spider

Cao77 · 13/09/2023 22:15

I'm sure big spiders used to be like a 1p including legs and now they are more like coffee mug diameter size. I disapprove of this change!

saymynamesaymy · 13/09/2023 22:17

No I don't think the one with the eggs is a false widow, that one pops out quite often and is a brown colour with no markings that I can see.
It has a neighbour on the other side of the patio door (the one who's made a hammock) and that is the one that appears to have white marking on its back. I'll try and get a pic tomorrow

I have a massive one living in my utility room. It stares me out every time I go in there.

Sounds nasty !!

It wasn't great but it wasn't like the stories that make the press. It was the swelling, redness and heat spreading out so rapidly that was disconcerting, however the pharmacist gave me some antihistamines and they worked very quickly to get the spread under control. The GP then gave me antibiotics for the associated cellulitis. Looked pretty nasty after 48hrs but calmed right down on treatment.

If you've got false widows nearby just be cautious and seek treatment straight away. We now have antihistamines and antiseptic liquid available at home to clean the bite (reducing the risk of cellulitis) and hopefully stop the immediate swelling.

TheSimpleThings17 · 13/09/2023 22:20

Oh gosh my son has just got over his second false widow spider bite…it was awful, really nasty resulting in antibiotics both times, if it is one (or more!) get rid!!

Cao77 · 13/09/2023 22:24

Had to get it out.....A pint glass and a massive flick straight out the window did the trick. However, my 8 year old DS was fascinated and was disappointed with the swift removal lol! 🕷🕸

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 13/09/2023 22:27

That's why I keep those little spindly cellar spiders as 'pets' because they eat all the other motherfuckers spiders

SensibleWearForGeographyFieldTrip · 13/09/2023 22:31

I have some massive spiders this year, all getting ready to have their Autumn fancy walkabout.
What worried me was last week I found a massive HUGE dead wasp/hornet when I awoke at 3 am, on a shelf, definitely dead, one of the biggest I've ever seen.
Got up at 5am and it was gone, nowhere for it to go except FB or it being hauled away.
Who took it and how big are they ???

Caswallonthefox · 13/09/2023 22:34

I've had various false widows in and around my kitchen window for the last 5 years. The most I've had at once was 5. One decided to lay her eggs in front of my cookery books, I waited until she disappeared and got rid of them.
They hide in the pulley hole in my sash windows and only come out completely when it's dark. They are awesome at catching the flies.
I don't bother them and they don't bother me.
However I've had to "save" my ds from 2 house spiders in the last fortnight, to the point where I left him a glass and a piece of cardboard.

CodLiverOiled · 13/09/2023 22:41

I've got two in my room keeping me company....

I'm well jel of the poster with a wasp spider in their garden! They are amazing.

ThunderCloudsinSumer · 14/09/2023 07:06

@JustAnotherCheeseburger

And esp if you have Children kill the false widows!

They are very fast breeders.

FernsAndFlowers · 14/09/2023 07:14

This is the goldenrod crab spider I found living on my agapanthus a couple of years ago. Not very big but fascinating to look at! I visited her every day - she was an amazing hunter - and then one day she was gone 😞

I had a cellar spider in the shower room that would watch me wash.

Yes we kill any we can. Mostly they're in the fence panels and outside of our shed, so not really places the kids go (but also not places we can easily remove them from). They do also scurry away when disturbed. The kids know what they look like and know to leave them alone, which I think is all we can do.

Of course, they will be in the neighbours gardens too, so we can't irradicate them.
