Jet2 adverts and the 'perfect family' 🙄

Hi,

Just seen the latest Jet2 advert with yet another family of 4. Dad - tall, tanned and ripped, mum - basically a super model. Both around 30, kids around 10, always a boy and a girl. All 'beautiful' and slim. It seems Jet2 believe this is the perfect family dynamic.

I'm not sure I've seen a family or couple of colour either. Could be wrong here though.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not naive enough to think they are the only company using looks to sell their product, but they just seem so unapologetic about it.

Maybe I've missed a more inclusive ad of theirs....

I guess for realism they should use tattooed, obese parents and their wobbling children, screaming 'Jaydon get yous fucking arse 'ere' instead. 😉
Using models tends to look better though on adverts.

Diversity in adverts tends to be pushed quite heavily.

WavyLines11 · 11/09/2023 12:20

I agree (music is annoying too).

The families/couples are always so perfect, I can't see how adverts that can make you feel inadequate are a good thing 🤷‍♀️

Spaghetti23 · 11/09/2023 13:29

@drinkuptheezider oh I don't need complete realism 😂 but perhaps just a smidge.

@WavyLines11 yes, the music drives me mad! I did actually go on a Jet2 holiday a few years a go and they play it on a loop on the plane! "Ooo ooo ooo, oooo oo ooo ooo oo oo oooo" 😖

Also I would rather have the described family than the alternatives pushed for "divertisty".

Why? Genuinely given that you just said you don't care and it's about price why would you rather have the straight white couple?

Spaghetti23 · 11/09/2023 13:42

@staceysolo quite simply, you sound awful.

@Webex because they're a bigot.

@staceysolo so if all families are diverse, why don't you want to see any diversity? How bizarre 🤔

I have the Jet 2 theme in my head now.

This doesn't bother my to be honest as it's the holiday they are advertising and I'm probably going to book one anyway.

LlynTegid · 11/09/2023 13:47

Almost all holiday adverts are the same, and you get no warning even in the small print about the kind of family @drinkuptheezider describes.

Sympathy for the people who live in the places such people go to. We saw in 2020 and 2021 when foreign travel was restricted how unpleasant some people are on holiday.

TimeForHygge · 11/09/2023 13:48

I don’t understand why people get upset about nice looking people in adverts.

I can quite honestly say that I don’t sit there and feel excluded because I am not 30 and a size 8.

Are people’s esteems that low?

usernother · 11/09/2023 13:51

I couldn't care less. They are flogging holidays and if they want to use good looking people to do that, I don't care.

BishopBrennansArseHole · 11/09/2023 13:52

Who cares? Good looking nuclear families do exist y’know!

I went to a resort recently that was popular with Jet2 customers , it sounds like the same one.😂

For extra realism, they could add in the parents drinking pints all day by the pool, then fighting with each other at night (and being separated by hotel staff).

Spaghetti23 · 11/09/2023 13:55

@TimeForHygge I don't. It's not that, it's the fact that they never mix up the dynamics. I don't expect every advert to represent everybody. That's an impossible ask, but I find it pretty depressing that we're still supposed to see this family as 'the family'.

Isn't this the one with the tubby boy who laughs when his sister drops her ice cream and the dad bombs into the pool or is this last year's. I thought they were quite crude, but do agree on the whole

God no, that's On The Beach 🤢

scoobydoo1971 · 11/09/2023 14:14

I think advertising campaigns have always swayed towards showing attractive models, whatever the rights or wrongs of it. It doesn't reflect reality. The average 30 something couple with 2 kids won't be holidaying abroad if they take home average wages, or are not willing to get into massive debt funding it. I took my kids on a last minute jet2 holiday, and most of the demographic at our hotel were retired folk holidaying with friends and partners. Jet2 must be struggling to sell to their target market of beautiful people, given the abundance of last minute deals.

Weefreetiffany · 11/09/2023 14:18

Lifestyle advertising is aspirational? Shocking reveal there, would never have guessed.

Taketurn · 11/09/2023 14:23

And let me guess they're white? Or one parent white and one mixed race thus ticking the diversity box? That's usually their ideal perfect family.

bellac11 · 11/09/2023 14:24

Werent people moaning not that long ago about the overweight family with the annoying ice cream incident and the woman kicking her flip flops onto someone while she crashes into the pool

So people didnt like that, they dont like this, what do they like?

blacksax · 11/09/2023 14:25

Most other tv adverts do have a multitude of different types of family though - several generations, same-sex relationships, blended families, from different ethnic backgrounds etc. It is fairly rare to see a 'white male/female couple with two kids' advert. It is absolutely right and proper that advertisers now recognise that not all families are the same, and everyone welcomes that, but on the other hand, the majority of couples are white and heterosexual, so adverts can and should be able to reflect that element of society, too. Just a thought.
