How to politely decline a meal?

Mummatobe98 · 10/09/2023 10:56

Mother in law is making a meal tonight for everyone, I'm anxious as the pork is being left to defrost in the hot sun and I'm scared of getting sick, I'm also pregnant and this is making me super cautious. I'm not sure what to do

Just say you're not hungry, or you have a bit of tummy pain or something and will just have a bit of bread

BasicPumpkinSpice · 10/09/2023 10:57

Say you are feeling queasy and are not going to risk eating anything in case you're sick.

bellac11 · 10/09/2023 10:58

I always leave meat out to defrost by the way, it never defrosts quick enough or thoroughly enough in the fridge

BoogLoaf · 10/09/2023 11:00

I wouldn't risk it, and wouldn't be eating anything that sounds dodgy just to please someone, so don't be pressured into it.

I wouldn't mention the pork specifically, I would just make an excuse that I wasn't feeling too good and had no appetite. Push it round the plate. Not hungry, sorry.

Safxxx · 10/09/2023 11:01

As you are pregnant you can say you feel a bit sick, hope you don't mind I don't want any meat...and just go for any sides.
As not showing up at all will be rude, so eat something else from the menu.

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/09/2023 11:05

I couldn't eat pork when I was pregnant. The smell of it made me vomit. Tell her that and eat the vegetables.

msbevvy · 10/09/2023 11:07

That wouldn't bother me at all so long as it is cooked thoroughly. But feeling queasy because of pregnancy is a perfect get out clause for you.

If you're feeling hungry you could even claim to have gone off pork since being pregnant and eat everything else without causing offence.

Cowlover89 · 10/09/2023 11:10

I always leave meat out to defrost. Gets cooked thoroughly.

Just say you feel a bit queasy

maddiemookins16mum · 10/09/2023 11:15

What actually on a plate outside in the garden?

CoreopsisEverywhere · 10/09/2023 11:15

Say that pork makes you feel nauseous at the moment. You can blame anything like this on being pregnant without anyone taking offence.

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/09/2023 11:15

I agree with people saying they always leave meat out to defrost and it will be fine but if she's pregnant and queasy I can understand that.

fiddlesticksandotherwords · 10/09/2023 11:23

I leave things out to defrost too, but I wouldn't leave a joint of pork to thaw in hot sunshine. The outside will be warm while the middle is still frozen. Recipe for disaster, that it.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 10/09/2023 11:25

I always leave meat in the oven overnight to defrost . Not out in the open kitchen , we have a fly problem at the moment,

It defrosts better at room temperature.. but out in the SUN ?? ,no that is dodgy its almost cooking it
Just say you've gone off meat while pregnant and could I just have sides please

I can understand it being defrosted in the kitchen or in the fridge overnight , it's 30c outside Confused just anxious as we all got really sick a couple of weeks ago , couldn't keep any fluids down etc , which I attributed to semi defrosted meat being bbq'd

Yep me to! Its never caused any kind of food poisoning.

wavws · 10/09/2023 11:39

Just say you feel nauseous and you’ve been throwing up everything you’ve eaten today and don’t want to risk it

BeverleyMacker · 10/09/2023 11:51

Go but say you're nauseous at any meat products at the moment so can only stomach the veg and potatoes.

Gjendefloooo · 10/09/2023 14:10

Is it outside in the garden defrosting????

As others have said, just say meat makes you feel nauseous at the moment and you'll just have a few vegetables.

Hell's bells.
I feel sick just thinking about it.
YANBU Op. NO WAY anyone should be eating that, never mind a pregnant woman!

frenchfancy81 · 10/09/2023 14:59

Don't have any pork- say you don't fancy it in the heat and eat what you like of the other bits.

Natty13 · 10/09/2023 15:29

That's your perfect excuse then. Just say "ooh looks lovely but I'm still feeling really off meat from when we got ill the other week so I'll just have some toast/a yoghurt/some sides/try to eat later when I go home. This pregnancy is playing havoc with my appetite!!"

uncomfortablydumb53 · 10/09/2023 17:23

No way would I risk eating that.. and I'm not pregnant
You have the perfect get out there
I'd say you've no appetite due to pregnancy nausea plus the heat is causing loss of appetite
Take some crisps and fruit to nibble on and have dessert if offered

Ohthatsabitshit · 10/09/2023 17:26

Go touch it and see if it’s cold?

Dartmoorcheffy · 10/09/2023 17:27

That is just crazy. Defrost in a plastic bag in cold water not outside ffs. I wouldn't est it either.
