Best flapjack recipe

Whatheactualchuff · 09/09/2023 19:37

I’ve got a notion for a gooey, chewy, most delicious thing my mouth has ever tasted, flapjack.
I am a terrible baker, so this is usually a problem.
BUT if you’d be kind enough to give me your most fail safe recipe then I could crack on and eat the flapjacks of my dreams.
Many thanks

Condensed milk is the way to make them gooey! I use it every time and make the sluttiest flapjacks ever

APurpleSquirrel · 09/09/2023 19:53

I made these honey flapjacks the other day with some vanilla honey - tasted amazing:

SoupDragon · 09/09/2023 19:59

250g porridge oats (the cheap type, not large ones),
150g Butter,
2 generous tablespoons (75g) Golden Syrup
half a tin condensed milk

baking tin, no bigger than about 18cm x 28cm

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 160 degrees c
  1. Line the baking tin with baking parchment.
  2. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over a medium heat and add the syrup. Keep gently heating and stirring until all is melted and mixed.
  3. Add the condensed milk and mix. Bring to the boil for about a minute. If I'm honest, I just bung the milk in at step 3.
  4. Remove from the heat and gradually add the oats, folding them in. All the oats should be coated, and the mixture quite dense, but still sticky. Don't add so many oats that the mixture becomes dry.
  5. Pour the mixture into the tins and spread about so that it lines the tin to a depth of 2-3cm. Don't squash the mixture in, just spread it evenly.
  6. Bake in the oven for about 15mins. You should take them out when they just start to go brown round the edges, don't leave longer than this. If they're still squidgy in the middle that's fine, they set on cooling.

I was just about to say that SoupDragon's recipe is the best (and it is)

Thank you for this, I’ve never bought a tin of condensed milk in my life but it looks like I’ll be buying one tomorrow!

They sound good. Saving this for later.

How much is a tin of condensed milk? Weight or volume - it's sold in tubes where I live!

RedHelenB · 09/09/2023 20:11

I never use condensed milk and it's still chewy.

TheChosenTwo · 09/09/2023 20:11

I would recommend just eating them before they’re cooked in the oven! Never tasted a flapjack I liked, they’re just disappointing when cooked - straight out of the hot pan is when they’re best, it’s trendy now - deconstructed food 😂

This but get a bigger tray and double it...unless you can find a use for the rest of the condensed milk like drinking it neat out of the tin

397g according to the side of my tin.

Slutty flapjacks sound lovely😁

Hitched?

I have no idea what that means

SerpentEndBench · 09/09/2023 23:52

Make a double batch of soup dragon's because the first batch frankly won't make it to the oven.

Drews · 09/09/2023 23:55

Soupdragon's flapjack recipe is Mumsnet legend. It's a favourite in our house for years now.

SoupDragon · 10/09/2023 09:34

I originally found it online in 2006 but have tweaked it since by leaving out the extra sugar it called for. It really, really didn't need any extra sugar!

YorkieTheRabbit · 10/09/2023 09:41

Soupdragons recipe is lovely, sometimes I add coconut and sultans too.

This is the best I’ve found for squidgyness, but I’ve not seen the condensed milk version, but I’ve just added condensed milk to my shopping list 😂

Could you sandwich that recipe with fruit do you think?
flapjack
fruit
flapjack

or do you think it would fall to bits? Aiming for good school snacks.

Absolutely

SoupDragon · 10/09/2023 09:57

I've made mine with all sorts added to it. Dried fruit works, I've added ginger, cinnamon etc, melted in some squares of dark chocolate, used honey instead of syrup...

Bonbon21 · 10/09/2023 09:58

OMG!!
Another reason to buy condensed milk!!
You have made my day!!!

CyberCritical · 10/09/2023 10:02

If you find yourself with leftover condensed milk make a Spanish iced latte (or that's what the coffee shop near me calls it)

Double expresso shot or a small amount of really strong coffee
Top up with plenty of milk
Teaspoon of condensed milk
Lots of ice

So sweet and scrumptious

Saladfinger · 10/09/2023 10:23

That recipe was really popular on a forum called hitched so wondered if you were once on there.
