Massive increase of children with autism

TickingKey46 · 09/09/2023 08:56

I've noticed since the lock down there is a massive increase in children being assessed for autism and associated conditions. I mean massive.

On the school run parents are often discussing it it's become so routine. I'm really interested in why. Why are so many children being diagnosed with this condition?

It is a fact that on the continent there are fewer diagnoses even among genetically similar populations. Introversion or the milder cases of autism are by definition not chemical or physical medical problems. They are social issues, aka cultural.

Is there? From the stats I've seen the percentage of autistic people in the UK is 0.82% and the average in the Europe is 0.8%.

The Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder in Europe

This chapter set out to present a comprehensive review on the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among 5–18-year-olds living in Europe. The review was based on studies published between 2015 and 2020. Separate meta-analyses were conducted for...

@TatianaB

You are posting in a broken record fashion. Again another autistic trait.

You haven’t read my post or the other person’s, or taken into account the validity of multidisciplinary assessment.

You’ve disregarded and regurgitated your account of one individual which is biased as you dislike them intensely and are jealous of their financial position and the attention/support they receive.

Please read this

The assessments are thorough. They involve professional teachers, doctors, OTs, psychologists and computer based testing.

Unless you are saying that all of the above are unprofessional/inaccurate in their assessment there is no way this woman could force a diagnosis that is not there.

Your point of view is flawed and harmful to autistic people, particularly those on the spectrum that are high functioning and better able to mask.

My mum was accused of this. I had to have a brain scan in 2012 for something. And it turns out my mum was right all along - there was something wrong. Maybe if someone had listened I wouldn't have spent my childhood so ill all the time.

Absolutely n it what is happening or even how it works. Your constant rehashing of this however is a concern.

Assessing 0.8% autism - haven’t read whole study but have they studied all ages?

Is it 0.8% tested have autism but majority over 50 aren’t tested.

Also an increase in smaller families and both parents working. Could there be a benefit to the social development of Autistic children that was preveiously not acknowledged. That being,
more one on one attention from a SAHP and from siblings.
I wonder whether 5 days a week in large child care centres, though necessary, is the best way to bring up very small children.

We're noticing that my teen autistic daughter really needs someone home after school. It's affected my career path quite a bit and yes I think she'd have found life even harder if she'd been in full time childcare when younger.

I do think you have a point. Many autistic kids aren't very school-shaped (or rather school isnt aleays providing an autism'friendky environment) and are overwhelmed after a week/day at school. I believe there's a rise of parents of kids with send needs homeschooling etc as the provision isn't always there...and I can completely see how that happens.

hangingonfordearlife1 · 06/01/2024 08:50

it's a massive increase in diagnosis not the actual condition

CupOfCoffeePlease · 06/01/2024 09:22

Yes so much went undiagnosed before didn't it as were realising with people on 30/40s realising

I think it will be much higher in the future.
