Anyone ever stopped at Birmingham coach station at 3am ?

Sorry if the title is incorrect.
I am thinking of getting a coach to an airport and fly at 8am, but the coach I need has to change at New st. It stays for two hours and will be at 1am-3am.
Has anyone here done this? Did it feel safe?

TIA

Anyone?

I personally wouldn't. It's Digbeth which is a trendy area but quite edgy. If its the weekend there might however be somewhere open at that time although not if you can't leave your luggage.

Teaandbiscuits60 · 09/09/2023 13:48

If it’s Digbeth then no it’s not very safe and your luggage wouldn’t be either. I wouldn’t . Sorry op.

Thanks for the replies.
I was thinking the same but hoping someone would say it was fine.

No but I stopped there years ago for a similar length of time and rashly bought a pork pie. I've never eaten one since as it resulted in spectacular food poisoning. Stick to the crisps.

ClemmyTine · 09/09/2023 14:45

Blimey, my life may be in danger from all angles.

It’s open 24 hours so there will be staff around and the waiting room will be open.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/09/2023 14:51

No. I'd say, go earlier and get a hotel at the airport. It would be horribly edgy.

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 09/09/2023 14:58

Digbeth is not a crime ridden hellhole you’ll be perfectly safe. Sophie Turner was spotted having a nice time out in Digbeth the other day. If it’s good enough for celebs.

I’ve caught coaches from there at all times of the day and night and it’s always been fine. Digbeth is on the up and up recently and full of trendy young things.

StamppotAndGravy · 09/09/2023 15:19

It should be OK, but like any bits or train station late at night (or any time actually!) stay awake and keep a close eye on your bags. There is security around. I wouldn't fancy wandering round any city on my own at 2am and I doubt there would be much open anywhere.

ClemmyTine · 09/09/2023 15:47

I was thinking I wouldn't be the only one on the coach to the airport so was hoping it would be safe because other passengers were about.

I have, it was a lot quieter than I expected and there weren’t any staff about visibly, so I was a bit more anxious that I’d expected to be, but it was a needs must situation and I was fine. The coach was late but made it up.

WinterBerry7 · 09/09/2023 15:52

Would you be waiting at New Street (train station) or Digbeth Coach Station? Your OP mentions New Street which is why I ask. They are in two different locations (and settings!)

ClemmyTine · 09/09/2023 15:55

It would be New st coach station.

Is staying at an airport hotel the night before possible? It's not that I think you'll be murdered at the bus station, but it sounds like quite a grim night. Have you checked hotel room rates?

ClemmyTine · 09/09/2023 16:00

Sorry,, brain dead here. It says Birmingham coach station!! I was thinking of New st..
DOH..

I've been there and wouldn't recommend it if there is any other alternative

Daisychainsandglitter · 09/09/2023 16:09

I live in Birmingham and Digbeth isn't the best. I'd try and avoid!

CornedBeef451 · 09/09/2023 16:20

I live and work in Birmingham and wouldn't do that!

It is a dodgy area, up and coming so probably fine during the day but very dodgy later on.

ClemmyTine · 09/09/2023 16:42

Thanks for replying.
I can stay in a hotel or drive and park up. It's just a coach would have been my first choice. Even a train stops for an hour in Sheffield and it being the early hours I didn't want to do that.

Thank you everyone.

I think I'd be happier in Sheffield train station for one hour in the small hours than Digbeth coach station for two hours at the same time of day.

itsgettingweird · 09/09/2023 16:53

If you'd be happier in Sheffield city centre at anytime of day than Birmingham I'd certainly avoid Birmingham for fear of certain death!

Sheffield city centre isn't safe in broad daylight!

GoingToBeLessRubbishAtLife · 09/09/2023 17:00

How about getting the train straight to the airport and staying there overnight? Is that a possibility?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/09/2023 09:11

I don’t think you’d be in actual danger, but it would be grim.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/09/2023 09:12

And Sheffield city centre is no worse than any other imo.
