The same child got all the jobs AGAIN

Children are Year 5, 3 classes per year.

Each class has 1 boy and 1 girl in school council, 1 boy and 1 girl on the eco-council then Year 5 have 1 boy and 1 girl per house (3 houses) as Deputy House Captains, and Year 6 have 1 boy and 1 girl per house as House Captains (usually the ones who where DHCs in Year 5).

It’s supposed to be that you are only allowed 1 job per year, you can’t be on both councils or be on a council and be a House Captain.

Except the last 2 years the same girl has been on both councils for the class, and this year she’s been voted again and also given Deputy House Captain. There was literally no point in my DD standing up to do the speeches for each as when this girl stood up to do hers DD knew she’d get all the jobs again, and she did – shes the same team as my DD so DD had no chance.

It just seems wholely unfair. There’s no logic behind it, she’s a popular girl among the class but she’s not related to a teacher or anything so I don’t get it. Usually the HT is very fair and ensures each child only gets 1 job per year but this child seems to get round that rule.

I’m all for boosting the confidence of DC who need it, but it just seems unfair for this girl to stand up and get all the jobs when others have never had a chance.

I’m not going to complain, I did a few years ago when she was given School Council and Eco-Council and was told by the HT that she always ensures each child only gets 1 job and that all the Year 5s and 6s have equal chance of getting DHT or HC. And that any child who put themselves forward for any job that didn't get a job will be given a big part in the Year 6 end of school show.

Why does this happen though? Why is this one child allowed 3 jobs when 2 other DC who’ve never had a chance could do it?

Her parents on the PTA?

I would have no idea which parents were part of the PTA in general, especially at this stage of the year.

Ime, in most schools it plays very little part in classroom decisions. Maybe in very small schools where everyone knows everyone, but much less so in larger schools.

When you say PTA parents ‘kiss arse’ what do you mean?
And of course the parents that the school knows better and the ones that contribute are the ones that go on trips - why would it be otherwise? The school choose people they know are reliable. Apart from anything they are more likely to have a dbs.

Wonder why anyone would bother to be on a PTA and do all the fundraising, meetings etc given its seen so derisory by so many!

Please complain @Year5ClassJobs , school councillors should be completely up to the pupils to decide. There is no point the children voting then the adults deciding for them
It's part of their learning, taking responsibility and ownership of their school

@Pets4Pets no, she turned out to be autistic and is fairly unlikely to complete mainstream education - so I'm very glad we made hay when the sun shone, before the complexities of masking and friendships and hormones changed her trajectory. Though obviously parents who don't see her in school plays or in elected roles any more will surmise it is because the secondary school doesn't have a PTA for me to use my influence via 😂

School is not work, where the most able and well prepared should get the responsibility.
School is about giving children opportunities to develop skills and confidence, which they might not already have, so the child who is best prepared and most qualified should not always get all those opportunities.. because they don’t need them.

Agreed

If you've done it one year you should be out of the running after that. It's pants seeing it go to the same handful every year.

That said I don't think it sets up those children particularly well for the real world either. They need to learn disappointment and being one of the group too.

Bogbrushhair · 09/09/2023 10:54

As an example of how these things happen- the ‘golden child’ in my child year got the same job twice in two years against the ‘rules’, because the new class teacher wasn’t aware they’d already done it, golden child didn’t make her aware, and other children didn’t want to ‘snitch’ because golden child was v popular and everyone wanted to stay in their favour. Schools should do more to ensure more equality of opportunity, children can really benefit from these roles I believe.

It's a difficult one isn't it. DS isn't the outgoing type so he wouldn't volunteer to be a leader of any sort but roles like House Captain are highly admired and there's always huge competitions to become one (as well as other roles like eco leaders and school council etc).

Mine goes to a state school and as far as I know it's always the kids who vote for leadership roles rather than the teachers, which I'm not sure whether that's the right thing to do. There's a girl in DS's year who seems to do well in speeches and gets the most votes, but she's not even that popular.

I have no idea whether she's naturally talented or gets coaching from her parents but feel it's unfair that those who are not so good at public speaking don't stand a chance.

This said girl has been voted as house captain this year and a leader of some sort last year and the previous year. School clearly should do something about it or teach them how to plan for a speech so they know what they're doing.

That sounds tough and I hope she is doing ok, friendships and hormones are beastly to deal with for any teen and especially for ND young people.

I think you absolutely should complain. What you were told by the HT wasn’t true. If they have a policy each child should only do one job they should stick to it.
