Dog barking last night - neglect

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 08/09/2023 09:42

Don’t want to put in AIBU.

So last night from say 11pm but then went on to 2am a dog (sounded small) was barking about 4 streets away. Tried RSPCA but got recorded message.

At first it was irritating but I thought no it’ll stop soon. Then I thought who leaves a dog outside on the hottest night of the year, who’s obviously distressed and hot? It did stop but poor creature. Sad

If this is a one off then I don’t think you can jump to neglect. All sorts of reasons the dog might have been barking and all sorts of reasons the owner might have been out. The dog might have free access to the garden and was choosing to be there.

KateyCuckoo · 08/09/2023 09:46

You called the RSPCA for that??

Playdoughcaterpillar · 08/09/2023 09:57

Cooler in the garden that time of day than the house! It's annoying but not necessarily neglect. My dog barks more outside in the evenings, there are lots of foxes around. I have to keep enticing him back in. It could be that.

I got an answer phone but I was worried to be honest. It was barking non stop for over 3 hours.

Yes but this dog was barking non stop for over 3 hours. Must have been hot.

if you go out ensure it can get shade etc. it sounded in distress to be honest wasn’t like foxes or when a dog usually barks.

Playdoughcaterpillar · 08/09/2023 11:11

Why would it need shade at 11pm? It’s dark then

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 08/09/2023 11:12

Just got an update on local WhatsApp group.

Apparently according to neighbours the dog was left in the garden with no access to the house and no water whilst the owners went out til 2am and the owners bought the dog over lockdown and were saying recently they wanted to rehome him.

It’s still hot! Anyway apparently it had no water or water bowl was empty and had nowhere to lie down… apart from decking and patio area.

A neighbour looked over fence, saw dog and water bowl but couldn’t and wouldn’t go in.

Sure

Foggyfoggyfoggy · 08/09/2023 11:39

Some knobs just should not have a ddog. Including recent man who was savaged by his own xl bully..
He lived in a block of flats..
Came home drunk at 2am and was mauled....
Hopefully your neighbour will rehome to a better place soon op.
My dd's ndn has a husky locked out overnight that howls for hours.. Dd has started the process the council need to take action.
Maybe a option if it happens again.

ReeseWitherfork · 08/09/2023 12:23

In the three and a half years (?) they’ve owned him, is this the first time it’s been an issue? Is the dog otherwise fine?

BTW I think decking and patio are both perfectly adequate places for a dog to lie.

mindutopia · 08/09/2023 12:27

I mean, realistically, it was probably cooler outside than inside, if you live in an area that is built up enough to have a house 4 streets away. So perhaps they were trying to keep the dog cool all night?

Are you sure the dog was actually outside? And not just in a house/enclosed patio area with all the windows open due to heat? Our dog was barking the other day and I literally thought she was outside somewhere and went looking for her all around the house/in the road. She was in fact in the house exactly where she should be, but with the windows and door open due to the heat, she sounded like she was somewhere outside.

KateyCuckoo · 08/09/2023 11:30

Sure

Ok so you know me in real life yeah?! I’m on a local WhatsApp group for the area! We talk a lot about issues like crime, neighbourhood stuff etc, helicopters over the park, and missing dogs cats etc. was set up over lockdown

Captains Ave the day cuckoo land. Dog might have been barking at hedgehogs

daffodilandtulip · 08/09/2023 12:31

I feel your pain. We had one barking outside two doors away, from 2am-5am. Apart from it driving me mad, I thought the thing was going to have a heart attack the way it was scratching and wailing to be let back in.

PurpleMonkeys · 08/09/2023 12:31

If you're on a local WhatsApp group that is near you and able to give you all the information about the dog, it's owners etc. You'd have been there discussing the dog, not here.
And it renders this thread pointless

Or, this thread was started and you hoped for other responses? When people didn't respond how you wanted, then you turned to the WhatsApp group looking for support and headpatting.

or WhatsApp group is nonsense but mentioned only after responses didn't go your way.

Which the truth is? Who knows.

Neighbour who checked said generally dog seems in good health and is walked but it’s a cockerpoo and apparently was trained at classes but has suffered anxiety separation since owners have returned to work and this is a recent issue. Apparently dog barks during the day sometimes but has a dog walker take it out and cleaner will ensure it’s ok during the day.

But I guess for 3.5 years if everybody is around ahd suddenly less people then yes it could develop separation anxiety.

Where would the RSPCA have gone? Wandered round the neighbourhood??

I was just making a comment on this or isn’t this allowed these days?!

I didn’t “hope” for any responses. And the WhatsApp group was already discussing this, not my issue. I was genuinely concerned for the dog is all or is that not allowed?

They do give advice and yep I admit shouldn’t have rung them.

I turn to MN on my birthday too and then I wonder why I bother to start threads.

OP posts:
Liv999 · 08/09/2023 12:39

Op contrary to what every one else is saying I think you were right to ring the RSPCA, you were concerned about an animals welfare and that's never a bad thing, if only more people were like you..

NoTouch · 08/09/2023 12:56

The bar for neglect for the RSPCA to attend is high. Leaving a otherwise cared for dog outside barking isn't enough evidence for them to do anything.

Calling the RSPCA to say you can hear a dog barking for a couple of hours about 4 streets away was ridiculous - if you did genuinely care for the dogs wellbeing surely the first step would be you go and investigate/ask someone else to investigate/ask on the neighbourhood whatsapp at the time it was happening before expecting a charity to rock up and sort it out with no information.

It sounds like you were just hoping someone would sorted out the noise nuisance for you rather than any concern for the dog.

daffodilandtulip · 08/09/2023 13:26

I don't understand the hate on this thread. It's perfectly possible to be annoyed at the noise and worried for the dog, at the same time.

NoTouch · 08/09/2023 13:49

"Hate" is a bit strong (and overused when posters challenge an op). No one on the thread "hate"s the OP.

The might not understand the OPs (lack of) action, or be debating her intentions. But there is no hate.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 09/09/2023 09:30

Well things seem to have changed a bit here.

I don’t mind either way if people think I’m lying etc (there’s a very active local WhatsApp group for the street and another for the area etc. we do seem to be a bit over interested in others local activity. But as I said, I was concerned about the dog after a while. And judging on what others have said I feel I was right to call RSPCA. It is a few streets away and noise does carry but I genuinely after 2-3 hours was more concerned about the dog’s welfare in this heat than the actual barking! I can put ear plugs in for the barking.

I was out for dinner last night at a lovely French restaurant for my birthday 🥳 and back at 12.30am (gone midnight) and no dog barking so can assume owners ensured their dog was inside with water. Maybe if wax a one off leaving it outside? It was still very warm where we were (SE London) last night.
