Is anybody any good at reading the handwriting on old death certificates? What does this say?

The first word is obvious but we are stumped by the next two words?

What do we think MN? 🤔

It was 1901 if this helps your thinking?

@MissedItByThisMuch has it right!

MrMucker · 07/09/2023 22:49

To me the second word is television.
Cant see past that now

MissedItByThisMuch · 07/09/2023 22:50

@GarlicGrace I think the loop that looks like the second e is part of an elaborate capital E

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 07/09/2023 22:51

I think there is definitely an r in the middle word. Just after the crease.

Labourer electrical work

This

betsyannegrey · 07/09/2023 22:54

Elswr is the beginning or the second word

Mountainsandlakes · 07/09/2023 22:55

Second word isn't electrical, it ends ck.

WinterDeWinter · 07/09/2023 22:57

It’s not electrical I don’t think - I t’s the name of the ‘works’ ie factory, as someone said upthread.

PeskyRooks · 07/09/2023 22:57

MissedItByThisMuch · 07/09/2023 22:44

I think it says Elswick Works. Was he in Newcastle by any chance? There was a factory by that name there according to Google.

This is it for sure

betsyannegrey · 07/09/2023 22:57

If you could post some more of the writing I cloud give a better guess at the ending of the second word.

GetWhatYouWant · 07/09/2023 22:57

I agree with pp who suggested looking him up in the censuses prior to his death for details of his occupation.

fiddlesticksandotherwords · 07/09/2023 22:58

Contact the register office which issued the certificate and ask for a copy. The writing should be clearer on that.

Calmdown14 · 07/09/2023 22:59

Also don't think it's electrical.

The acts of parliament granting rights to supply electricity weren't passed until 1900.

It is the name of the works so some local geography would help

ApolloandDaphne · 07/09/2023 22:59

Elswick works seems the most likely if he was from that part of the UK.

In 1901?

betsyannegrey · 07/09/2023 23:00

Yes, Elswick fits (I write in copper plate calligraphy) the link from the W to the I makes it look like the standard lowercase form of R

The Institution of Electrical Engineers was founded in 1871, though, as the society of Telegraph engineers

This sent more for interest, I am not convinced the word is electrical either. Mor likely a name.

MarigoldMaud · 07/09/2023 23:09

Absolutely Elswick.

3dogsandarabbit · 07/09/2023 23:16

I think it's Elswick Works too. If you look at how the K is written at the end of works, it looks the same at the end of the second word so second word ends in a K.

AdaColeman · 07/09/2023 23:21

Elswick Works was my first thought too.
Whereabouts did he live @EightMonthsScared ?
