Spiders / peppermint spray

Iusedtoworkthere · 06/09/2023 22:23

We are overrun with massive spiders at the moment (overrun might be exaggerating but there are a lot).

Is it true that peppermint spray deters them?

Nope. It didn’t work for us. I tried conkers, peppermint spray, cleaned corners of webs, sprayed white vinegar, cedar wood etc. I was trying to be tolerant of them with natural deterrents before I got bitten, after that it was war. I was told about Indorex and started using that. I can’t remember the last time I saw a spider in the house. I find bodies but not live spiders. After the experience I had being bitten with cellulitis, sepsis and surgery to remove the skin around the bite I take no chances now.

Edited to say I often read posts on here where someone says ‘a spider/spider bites in the UK aren’t dangerous’. That’s bullshit. I’ve never taken a reaction like that to any bite and yes they can be dangerous. I live in Scotland btw. Since that bite I need antibiotics for bites that wouldn’t have bothered me before.

Stripeypyjamas · 06/09/2023 22:37

I can't see how it would. They run so fast by the time they've sensed the peppermint they're already making a nest in your hair.

Conkers in the corners of the rooms does it

Conkers in the corners of the rooms does it

That’s an old wives tale and there’s plenty evidence online to prove conkers don’t repel spiders.

atatotalloss4 · 06/09/2023 22:47

Dethlac!!! Spray it around all the doors and windows and you'll never see an alive spider in your house just curled up dead ones. Lasts for months once it's sprayed on, you can get it in b and a.

Last year we only saw a handful of dead spiders, I forgot to redo the dethlac this year and Jesus Christ my house is full of huge horrid awful terrifying (and other dramatic descriptors) spiders! Straight to b and q after work tomorrow to get more because frankly I can't live like this 🤣🤣

Works for my spiders

morknmindi · 06/09/2023 22:50

Conkers don't work.

Only three things work.

Henry Hoover.

Extra firm hold hairspray which is cheaper than commercially sold 'kill spider/crawling insect' spray.

A size 12 man's hob nailed boot.

morknmindi · 06/09/2023 22:51

Also, those 'I can't believe I'm not a spider' creepy looking thin legged harvest men as we call them, are a great defence as they kill large spiders, so leave them if you can.

CattingAbout · 06/09/2023 22:51

We've got a cat who is pretty efficient at dealing with the big spiders. Otherwise it's a case of trapping them in a jar and putting them out of the window.

As I said, there’s plenty evidence and studies that have been done which are available to read online to prove it’s an old wives tale.

Whoknowswhatanymore · 06/09/2023 23:35

omg we have just had the biggest spider we have ever seen, no word of a lie! It was in dd bedroom and she screamed out. I went in thinking it would be the smallest thing ever (usually is) and oh my word I ran out of there in a flash! 🙈 DH came up with the spider catcher and even he was shocked by the size of it! Luckily we caught it and put it out for the night and hopefully it won’t come back for breakfast! Lol! I had read that the spiders were big this year but this blew my mind! And made me even more scared of spiders lol! 🙈🙈🙈 if anyone has a good deterrent please let me know! We already have cats but I don’t think even they would have messed with this beast lol! 🤣🤣🤣

Says out of stock. Did you buy it all 😮

Dartmoorcheffy · 06/09/2023 23:49

I put conkers down all the corners behind the TV, sofa etc 4 years ago. Not had a single spider in the house since and we had loads before that.

Terrifying! Did you see what kind of spider?

Zebedee55 · 07/09/2023 07:02

I use this, and it really works for me. I spray it under things, on windowsills etc.

DustyLee123 · 07/09/2023 07:04

I put conkers on all windowsills, any that do come in get the Dyson.

ungryHippy · 07/09/2023 07:48

I bought this spider catcher six years ago https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000X26IRE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I leave well alone if they stay out of the way in the corners of ceilings etc, but sometimes they have to be shifted, like the HUGE one sitting in the shower waiting for me yesterday.
Very satisfying to easily pick up without getting too close, take it outside and watch it run away unharmed.

Yes this. I use these and it's changed the way I deal with them

friedgoldeggs · 07/09/2023 10:00

Weirdly, we never usually get spiders ever (pretty bloody lucky really) but in the last day or so we've had 3 heifers just casually roaming across the carpet or the kitchen worktops. At the moment we're trying to catch them and pop them back outside but DP is a bigger wimp than I am so not sure how long we can keep it up tbh Grin

BareBelliedSneetch · 07/09/2023 10:03

Indorex flea spray kills the buggers for a while.

cooldarkroom · 07/09/2023 10:17

My cleaner says you spray wood furniture spray (like O cedar) on your fluffy insect removal /or swiffer thing, (no idea what you call it) then run it round the angles of the ceiling, & spray around all the windows...
She says they hate it

RatherBeRiding · 07/09/2023 10:25

Cellar spiders work if you have them - they are voracious hunters including other, much bigger spiders.
