£35 for a water bottle (and never named of course!)

The current craze in the primary school I work in are these Air Up water bottles.

£35 😱- I know it is none of my business what people spend their money on BUT it does become my problem when they go missing and as they are invariably unnamed, I have parents shouting at me that little Jonny cant find his and do I know how expensive they are?

Telling me that it's green/purple/blue or whatever, does not help as there are over 800 children at our school so the chance of there being another green/purple/blue one is quite high!!!

Buy a Sharpie and write the name on it (and while you're doing it, on the jumper, cardi and coat too please!!

And breathe!!

Totally agree. I let my daughter buy one (with her pocket money) but we named it in several places and agreed there was a good chance it would go missing and we needed to accept that risk. I think they are a silly waste of money but the point of her pocket money is that she's free to waste it! I definitely wouldn't think it was fair to give school hassle if it went missing

I use those name stickers for bottles and clothes, v easy and takes seconds (in fact I get the kids to do it now, I am all for delegation Grin)

And very easy for a child who fancies the bottle to remove?

I know most stuff us lost rather then stolen but it was amazing how the only things DS ever lost were the good branded things that might be coveted by another child.

DC's school banned them 😁

Alycidon · 06/09/2023 17:51

I see they've got some kind of scent system - how revolting.

ToxicPositivity · 06/09/2023 17:52

My dd came home saying her friend lost her Air Up bottle today. She lost her 5 quid water bottle on the first day of term and this was the replacement. What a waste.

The stikins ones don't seem to come off easily to be fair.

But yeah, I explained to DD it might get stolen and she was happy to take the chance.

Bottles with a scent system? Scent of what?

Fruit and berries.

Seaweasel · 06/09/2023 18:20

They can get fruity smells or whatever. It's to trick the brain into thinking that they are drinking squash rather than water. You have to buy the inserts that sit on the top of the bottle.

tunainatin · 06/09/2023 18:24

Thanks for this, I now feel much better than my child is 'the only child in the whole school who hasn't got an air up'. He has a £2 water bottle that we won't cry over if it gets lost.

fairyfluf · 06/09/2023 18:30

Just stick an airfreshner on a cheap bottle.

jenbj · 06/09/2023 18:36

Its terrible that parents shout at you. It's their child they should be shouting at. I feel so sorry for teachers these days.

Rudolphthefrog · 06/09/2023 18:39

Thinks back to my own school days, when nobody had a water bottle and yet somehow we all survived…

My own children have £1 smash bottles from Tesco. They do the job, don’t break and I don’t care if a couple get lost over the year. If parents are silly enough to send expensive unnamed kit to school they should just be politely told to go away when they complain little Timmy’s stuff is missing.

ladyvimes · 06/09/2023 18:42

My two bought them with birthday money as I agree it’s a ridiculous price for a water bottle. I have made sure they are named and if they lose them then that’s their problem and they are not buying another!

Pooheadbumbum · 06/09/2023 18:46

Oh my eldest 2 were talking about these. They ended up getting a lecture from me about the privileges of having ready access to clean, safe water and that it’s a disgrace to think we can’t just drink that and be happy without these stupid gimmicks…

Needless to say, they haven’t mentioned them again 🤣

Edited

Fuck me what a waste. Why have squash when you can buy plastic inserts which will end up in landfill to trick you into thinking your water is actually squash.

Fools and their money, as the saying goes.

Can't anyone just reuse an evian bottle anymore?

illiterato · 06/09/2023 18:50

gateway vapes 🤣

( stolen from previous thread)

they are the biggest waste of money ever. Was the thing at my dc’s school last Christmas. My dc lost interest once they realised they had to buy their own refills.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 06/09/2023 18:52

I work in a private school, these are banned as it causes too many problems.

FreshStart12345 · 06/09/2023 18:58

I had a kid in the park ask me if ds had an air up bottle. I wondered what he was on about.
In all fairness I had thought the smiggle water bottle I had bought was quite an extravagance.
I guess there are worse things for crazes then a water bottle

TolkiensFallow · 06/09/2023 18:58

God I sharpie everything… don’t understand why you wouldn’t

itsgettingweird · 06/09/2023 19:18

I had parent today tell me little Sally had not come home with her jumper yesterday and it wasn't in her bag today.

I say I'll check classroom and lost property this evening. Ask where about name tag is so I can check quicker.

"Oh it's not labelled. But it's navy with the school logo on it"

How I kept professional and didn't reply "so's everyone's 🤦‍♀️" I don't know 🤣🤣

It's a size 22 ladies and gentleman if that helps 🤷‍♀️

Strange how kids have got more susceptible to dehydration recently isn’t it.

Oh, I've had exactly the same conversation with a parent.
