How much are your teens paying for car insurance??? 😱

MentholLoad · 06/09/2023 16:27

DD had learners insurance with Marmalade for 6 months so that she could drive my car, it was about £400 I think.

she is getting her own car to learn in and we have started looking for insurance quotes. first one (with Marmalade) has come back as £5300 for the year or £490 a month! wtaf?? this is with a black box fitted. this would insure her even when she passes her test/wouldn't need to change insurance

how much are your teens paying? can you recommend an insurance company?

Is it cheaper if you are the main driver and she is on the policy as a named driver?

PinkiOcelot · 06/09/2023 16:33

My DD was insured before she passed her test. I’m not sure who with (I’ll find out) and it wasn’t too bad as she obviously had to have someone in with her at all times.

When she passed her test she was insured with Privilege for £960, which I didn’t think was too bad. No black box either.

I'll have a look at Privilege, thanks

That would be illegal if she is the main driver and also likely mean no cover if she ever needed it.

SilverSpringss · 06/09/2023 16:45

Blimey, my 18 year old DD pays £100 a month which is enough!

Greyfoot · 06/09/2023 16:45

I have my DS and his car on our multicar policy. It's still outrageous but it was the cheapest way I found to do it.

Tronkmanton · 06/09/2023 16:45

My DS has a policy with Marmalade on his 64 plate Golf, £1050 annual premium for him earning no claims and me & DH as names drivers. It started the day he turned 17 so has taken him from learning to after passing test with no change in price. Black box but no curfew or anything and fit yourself.
Our DD did the same thing but after the first year it was cheaper to put her on our LV multicar policy (no black box), with her earning no claims & us as named drivers. Her’s is also a Golf, 18 plate. I think her premium this year was about £850 (she is 19 with 2 years no claims).

That would be called "fronting" and could cause your dd problems if she needed to make a claim. Also doesn't build her No Claims Bonus.

This is known as fronting insurance and is illegal.

LauraNorda · 06/09/2023 16:50

Why not let her continue to use your car? No need to buy her a car yet because she can't go out on her own.

My lad is in his early 20s and when I added him to my insurance (as a learner), it cost an extra £92 for the year.

Whatsinthefridge · 06/09/2023 16:52

Go careful adding you child as a named driver. Named drivers only drive the car occasionally. If they use it all the time this is called Fronting and it’s fraud and illegal. Also the majority of companies wont let them build their own No Claims, not that it’s worth much.

RyanGoslingsTan · 06/09/2023 16:56

That's fronting and is illegal

HarrietStyles · 06/09/2023 17:00

Can you add yourself (and your partner if you have one) as additional names drivers on her policy? That often brings the quote down.

Do NOT do that if you are not the main driver as it would invalidate your insurance.
But it’s often cheaper to have her as the main driver and you still there as an added driver. Sounds crazy but 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

confusedmum2023 · 06/09/2023 17:05

when I passed my test I added my mum as a named driver and it reduced my policy, she’s still on till this day. I added my dh a few years ago as a provisional driver and it didn’t cost anything additional but maybe age in his side there.

MentholLoad · 06/09/2023 17:06

now I've looked on MoneySupermarket and have quotes for £300 for the year.....that seems too cheap!!!

Do NOT do this if she is the main driver. It's insurance fraud.

You can be a named driver on her policy though, may also help with premiums.

CantFindTheBeat · 06/09/2023 17:08

What car is it? That makes a big difference.

My sons was about £1500 per year when he passed, black box with 1.2 engine

There’s less risk to the insurer with an experienced driver added because the company assumes the car won’t be driven by the young person 100% of the time

Laburnam · 06/09/2023 17:21

My DS insured separately with our car using Marmalade, a pay as you go and it builds up no claims

Is that for her as a learner? That will be cheaper because she won't he driving unsupervised, but it will change when she passes her test.

Chasingsquirrels · 06/09/2023 17:32

Ds2 currently has 12 weeks on my car (12yo passat) for £85 with Collingwood.
His test is the week after it ends, so I'll add an additional 7 days as long at it isn't extortionate.

Baconking · 06/09/2023 17:35

My 17 DD is with Myfirst.com

With black box and very reasonable

loudbatperson · 06/09/2023 17:47

Insurance while she is learning will be very cheap.

Once she passes, expect an eye watering sum.

It's fine to add yourself as a named driver with her as the main, and this may help the policy come down a little.

However do not put yourself as the main driver and her as a named, unless adding her as an occasional driver for your own car. It's fronting and is a type of insurance fraud. It's one of the most common ones too and is caught a lot. I used to work in the car insurance industry and we routinely uncovered cases of fronting.
