DD had learners insurance with Marmalade for 6 months so that she could drive my car, it was about £400 I think.

she is getting her own car to learn in and we have started looking for insurance quotes. first one (with Marmalade) has come back as £5300 for the year or £490 a month! wtaf?? this is with a black box fitted. this would insure her even when she passes her test/wouldn't need to change insurance

how much are your teens paying? can you recommend an insurance company?

DD AS a learner, on my car, not very much extra.

1st year, age 18, 1 litre Citroen, £1200 with BBox
2nd year, £700 no BB
3rd year, £500

Have you tried the comparison websites? We paid £1200 for our daughter for the first year with a black box. That was RAC but I found the best price on a comparison site and there are huge variations.

1600 per year for an 28 year old straight after passing. But would have been cheaper for a less sporty car. Make sure you look at cars in very low insurance groups

now I've looked on MoneySupermarket and have quotes for £300 for the year.....that seems too cheap!!!

Make sure you get one with a decent defaqto rating - means they pay out a higher percentage of claims.

Me and dh passed out tests 20 years ago. I can easily remember my in insurance being around £800 on a little 1 litre vw and dh was around £1000 on a 1.4. Our cars were both around 10 years old.

That would be illegal if she is the main driver and also likely mean no cover if she ever needed it.

I did not know this! thanks for the info, and to others who said the same, also

Is that for her as a learner? That will be cheaper because she won't he driving unsupervised, but it will change when she passes her test.

ah, I see! that's a bit worrying though, not knowing what it will go up to??

I passed in January. Was paying £300 for the year for my learner insurance. It changed to £960 for a year when I passed with me as the main driver, 2 named drivers (who do use my car) and no black box. I’m with Hastings

I think insurance has shot up recently. I was trying to buy a car for my DS who passed. Insurance was about £1300 for a corsa. This was in July? We’ve been away and for one reason or another put off buying him a car as we’ve never all been home at the same time. Looking again now the insurance on similar cars seems to be over £2000 at least.

I think car insurance has gone up generally but it looks like new drivers are being disproportionately affected.
