Following on from the very interesting previous thread of most overrated destinations, what do you think is one of the most underrated or unexpectedly good destinations you’ve been to?

OP posts:

Nuremberg. So pretty, loads to do and cheap.

Thessaloniki. One of the best city breaks, a nice mix of pool relaxation but lots to explore in the evenings.

Strasbourg. The BEST Xmas markets. A nice mix of French and German influences so you get the best of both.

Agree with whoever said Shropshire. We went because we found a cheap cottage but it was beautiful and loads to do. The weather was awful and we still had a great time.

'Also going to add the other threads favourite of Naples. It's rough and ready, but beautiful and a great base to explore other parts of the South'

I agree. I adored it. It's busy and noisy and crowded but it was so much fun, the food was great, and there is something interesting everywhere you look

Ditto Genoa - it's like Naples on a much smaller scale, without the crowds

I can never understand why so many people on here claim to hate Dublin. I've seen people claim there is nothing to do there 🤦🏻‍♂️ honestly don't know where to begin with that one. And there are tons of great restaurants

Lebanon - absolutely stunning country. Was only there for a few days and we visited Beirut and the surrounding areas - stayed with my Lebanese friend's parents. Jeita caves are stunning and Byblos is beautiful

Pisa - I loved it. I'd read so many places about it being really dull and I had the best couple of days there with DH.

accountpasswordaboutyou · 06/09/2023 14:06

Also loved Naples as others above have said.

Dinoswearunderpants · 06/09/2023 14:08

Gothenburg. Absolutely loved the city centre and then taking the ferry to the archipelagoes.

The Netherlands, specifically Gelderland. Lush, green, lovely wee towns, nice places to eat.

Kucinghitam · 06/09/2023 14:14

Ghent.

The Hague.

Utrecht.

Zimbabwe, in particular Victoria Falls.

Absolutely stunning place to see, amazing, ethical safari experiences and the most beautiful people.

TreesAtSea · 06/09/2023 14:32

Agree with mentions of the Netherlands and Belgium. NL is my favourite destination for many reasons: would be difficult to pick certain places within it. Re Belgium, I loved Ghent, Antwerp, Ypres and also want to see more of Brussels and ride the entire length of the coast on the Kusttram (only had time to go a short distance in the past).

Lake bled-absolutely stunning, especially in winter

Palawan- the Philippines

Washington State/PNW on the West Coast of the US

@TreatYoBookShelf and@Howtohandl I came on to say the same. Slovenia is one of the most beautiful countries I've visited. Ljubliana is such a cool city with castle and funicular, huge market square with gorgeous archway cafes along the river, and loads of quirky bits like the graffitied revolutionary artists' quarter and the lovely flea markets. very green with the trams and the bird hotels everywhere.

And Lake Bled and Bohinj are stunning - jewel-coloured water. The local wine is delicious too.

feralunderclass · 06/09/2023 15:22

@MyDogSmellsTerrible we stayed near Pudsey, but we loved the Leeds Rd area. I appreciate it's not exactly a typical holiday destination, but never felt unsafe, great architecture, amazing food, and a completely different cultural experience for us. Oh and it has easy access to dales/moors and other fab cities.

sunglassesonthetable · 06/09/2023 15:34

I'd second Shropshire.

Stunning, empty countryside even on a hot bank holiday. Amazing scenery.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 06/09/2023 15:36

Cleethorpes!

risefromyourgrave · 06/09/2023 15:41

Ooh @Maddy70 and @Elmerchecks, any particular tips for Carcassonne please? I’m going in about a month for 5 nights and would love some hints!

Kryten1958 · 06/09/2023 15:42

Holland - The people are friendly and welcoming, everyone under the age of 100 speaks English, and the flower fields are breathtaking.

Delatron · 06/09/2023 15:49

S.Germany near the Black Forest is a wonderful place for a holiday. We were on our way to Austria but had a much better time in Germany. Some fun street parties, the Germans were far friendlier than the Austrians. I’m keen to go back and explore more of Germany. I also absolutely loved Berlin.

Gaggley · 06/09/2023 16:01

Isle of Man - reminded me of the Cornwall of my childhood before it became quite so trendy. Interesting history, lovely beaches, not too crowded, we had a great holiday there.

Almahart · 06/09/2023 16:02

Malaysia, I can't understand why it isn't a super popular holiday destination, beautiful countryside and beaches, amazing food.

Belgium - we had one of the best city breaks ever in Antwerp, really beautiful, lots to do

RatherBeRiding · 06/09/2023 16:02

Ah yes Holland - not the kind of place you'd think would be so beautiful, but it is. And everyone is just lovely.

AffIt · 06/09/2023 16:03

@RampantIvy I completely agree re: Venice.

It gets such a kicking on MN, but we went at the end of January (so after Carnival) and it was fabulous: beautiful architecture (it looks EXACTLY the way I expected it to!), surroundings, food and almost slightly eery with the mist coming in off the lagoon...

whoruntheworldgirls · 06/09/2023 16:13

I love Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, lovely beach, very family friendly and i love getting a car and exploring the volcano area etc, great island.
Tenerife, again having a car and checking out the island away from the main tourist spots, gorgeous.
Mammoth Lakes, Sierra Nevada, know for ski season but just back from there as part of a road trip and the town is lovely and the lakes stunning.
