It's because they're Wallabees, they're handstiched and iconic! (Although not that loafer pair admittedly).

I'm sure they have other loafers at a cheaper price-point.

the back patent ones painful ? how ?

I agree with the OP they look painful,I could never wear them.

I think their prices went mad a couple of years ago, jumped up £40 overnight.

Gillstuck · 05/09/2023 13:25

I'd rather spend £160 on a pair of shoes that would last me for years than a pair of £57 school shoes for my DS that will last him 6 months, if I'm lucky. I don't though, of course.

Be ause when you have dodgy feet you know on sight what will work.

OP posts:

Artificially priced high in order to reduce in a sale at some point.

I like them and also have needy feet, OP.

Perhaps it's a Klarna premium for the 0% finance option. 🤔

Well then if you have dodgy feet I wouldn't mind paying anything for comfort

Totally agree with this. Those patent black ones would definitely hurt me on the heel area.

ohtowinthelottery · 05/09/2023 13:52

And there's no guarantee they'll be good quality either.
Adult DS used to insist on buying Clarks desert boots as "they're the original and best". After 2 pairs came away from the soles after a few months he gave up with Clarks.

Agreed. Wallabees are always expensive. And comfy!

Blossomandbee · 05/09/2023 14:03

Their prices have definitely gone up. The school shoes for my teenage dd were all around £70 in there. They used to be around the £40-£50 mark at most.

SparklyTwinkleGlitter · 05/09/2023 14:06

I haven’t bought Clark’s shoes for ages as I found them to be generally very poor quality in recent years.

I have big feet and look for comfy shoes in shops like Pavers or one of the independent shoe shops here in Ireland. Also brands such as Allegra and Waldlaufer are good and have comfy, well made shoes that last.

Tabitha005 · 05/09/2023 14:13

Vinted! ... which seems to be the answer du jour for any and all clothing and footwear-related quandaries these days!

Starseeking · 05/09/2023 14:16

Clarks prices have skyrocketed.

My Year 2 DC school shoes were £58, while my year 1 DC school shoes were £54.

They are very good quality though; 2022-2023 school shoes lasted the whole year for both DC.

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/09/2023 14:23

My dd’s school insist on formal shoes and she has these shoes. The ladies this year. The girls last year. It’s a lot of money for what they are. But it’s the only thing she will wear with her wide feet. The price difference is the VAT on the ladies pair.

Are Clarks having a laugh
my82my · 05/09/2023 14:30

Tkmaxx sell Clark's shoes much cheaper.

DisforDarkChocolate · 05/09/2023 14:32

Outlet only for me too.

They're Clark's originals. They are much more expensive than their normal range.

As above

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 05/09/2023 14:49

Precipice · 05/09/2023 12:53

Hmm, but they may be small sizes, but they still require labour to manufacture and then retail costs to sell. How much would you expect shoes for infants to cost? At what quality and at what conditions for the workers? Admittedly I don't know anything about Clarks' production conditions.

I'll admit that these look expensive for what they are. I don't really 'get' crepe soles - they don't look that durable or like they provide a good grip, and they have a weird smell, at least when new.

Clarks shoes were much cheaper when they were actually made in the U.K. with working conditions that were acknowledged to be very good.

Since outsourcing to Asia and India (and putting god knows how many people out of work in rural towns) I can’t imagine the workers are treated anywhere near as well.

VioletPickles · 05/09/2023 14:53

They are ugly. And I don’t think worth all
that cash.

MorvernBlack · 05/09/2023 14:54

I gave up on Clarks when we had numerous issues with the kids school shoes. Moved on to M&S, less expensive and longer lasting.
Clarks pricing is insane now, even as a skint kid growing up on a council estate, we had Clarks. Although admittedly sometimes they came from the factory shop (Tommy Ball's, the shop name still gives me a juvenile snigger).

OhYetAnotherBrickInTheWall · 05/09/2023 15:01

As others have said, it’s because they’re Wallabees and have always been expensive, with cult status.

fyn · 05/09/2023 15:04

When I was 13, Clark’s Wallabees were the height of fashion in my American high school. This was around 2005 and I remember my poor parents having to fork out over $100 for them. That was almost 20 years ago, £160 now doesn’t seem a huge amount comparatively!
