I'm looking for ideas for chapter books I could read to my 6 year old before bed. Can anyone tell me what your 6 year olds enjoy?

Almost 6, but Pippi Longstocking and The Queen’s Nose. Second one is surprisingly unengaging which is sad as loved the tv show as a kid 😄 he’d love me to read him Harry Potter but I think he’s too young.

Here for recommendations too!

PerspiringElizabeth · 03/09/2023 07:35

Oh also the Children of Noisy Village also by Astrid Lindgren

bapplebanana · 03/09/2023 07:36

Currently reading The Creakers, which he is really enjoying. Before this we worked our way brought Roald Dahl, and Enid Blyton's The Enchanted Wood trilogy (which he loved)

Isadora moon, kitty and the moonlight rescue.

Daughter absolutely loves anything by Harriet muncaster and we've read the entire 13+ isadora moon collection over the summer holidays.

I've enjoyed them too. 😳

ToastofLandon · 03/09/2023 07:38

I’m reading Harry Potter with my 6yo, she loves it. We’re currently on The Prisoner of Azkaban, will probably stop after this one until she’s older as it gets quite dark after this one.

Ostryga · 03/09/2023 07:38

Enid Blyton atm. I have all my books from when I was dd’s age so it’s lovely to see her enjoy them!

The Wishing Chair is a big hit.

Gertrudetheadelie · 03/09/2023 07:41

My DS is 5 but we've done lots of Dick King Smith, Anne Fine, the Wombles and I, Houdini. I'm working my way towards Stig of the Dump 🙂

Sprogonthetyne · 03/09/2023 07:41

How to train your dragon. It's nothing like the movies and there's about 12 fairly long books, so took about 3 months of bedtimes to get through.

Rugbyballhead · 03/09/2023 07:43

We're reading The Twits and I plan to read all my Roald Dahl books because they're brilliant.

SherryPalmer · 03/09/2023 07:43

My 6 year old is really enjoying this and written well so quite enjoyable to read too. He’s also liked some of the early Harry Potters and the Faraway Tree series

What are you currently reading to your 6 year old?
Usernamehell · 03/09/2023 07:47

Been working through classics during this holiday - Enid Blyton Faraway Tree collection and Roald Dahl books. We read these together (mostly her reading to me but swap when she’s tired)

She loves reading Isadora Moon and Rainbow Fairies herself

Next on our list is Wishing Chair and then the Famous Five collection. I’m loving revisiting my childhood favourites with her!

Mysa74 · 03/09/2023 07:48

I have a very girly girl at the moment who has ditched her old friends Peter rabbit and Thomas the tank engine after discovering fairies, unicorns and magic. She reads the owls of blossom wood, rainbow magic, the worst witch, and Darcy Bussels ballet stories, she wants to be Delphie or Rosa when she grows up...

Eileen101 · 03/09/2023 07:51

Harry potter (1). We have the first 3 and I definitely win go further than book 2 or 3 for now.
After reading the first, I think we'll move onto so e roald Dahl and Enid blyton.

Sugarfree23 · 03/09/2023 07:53

At the moment a hideous book about football, I can't even remember the name of it. The chapters are suited to a 6yo couple of pages long. But the content it's suited to a child much older.

Here for inspiration.
I was clearing his bookshelf the other day. I don't have the heart to ditch Julia Donaldson but I know he's past it.

VivaLaSpag · 03/09/2023 08:05

We're working our way through the Mr Gum books-they're hilarious!

SpaceJamtart · 03/09/2023 08:19

The Worst Witch books

partypompoms · 03/09/2023 08:19

Nature stories by Enid blyton
Pippi long stockings
Wishing chair by Enid Blyton
Obviously Roald dahls

bluechameleon · 03/09/2023 08:23

5.5yo. Just about to finish Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, but will wait until he's a bit older to read any further in the series. He has recently enjoyed the Boy Who Grew Dragons series amd The House That Sailed Away. He has also got into his brother's Beast Quest books but save your sanity and don't buy those, they are dreadful. I'm not sure what I'll read Next so I'm following this for inspiration.

Twizbe · 03/09/2023 08:26

We’ve been reading The Worst Witch series with my DS 6 and DD 4. I loved it as a kid and have really enjoyed the newer ones. Last night I actually read ahead to the end of Worst Witch and the Wishing Star. I just had to know what happened lol.

Sherrystrull · 03/09/2023 08:27

I teach 6 year olds. Last year I read and they loved...
Grimwood
Planet Omar
Fantastic Mr Fox
The Twits
Tilly and the Time Machine
The Lost Species

LittleRedY0shi · 03/09/2023 08:46

Like lots of others, the Enchanted Wood series were the first Enid Blyton chapter books we did but we've now moved on to the Naughtiest Girl at School, Secret Seven and Famous Five series.

ToeToeToe23 · 03/09/2023 08:48

When do you change to chapter books? We ready every night but we read just a couple of books each night. Things like the Dinosaur that pooped series or Aliens/Pirates/Dinos love underpants. DS is 5 but I don't think he would be interested in chapter books yet!

Sherrystrull · 03/09/2023 08:52

I think at ks1 they should be having a mixture of picture books and chapter books. I begin with short ones with pictures, interspersed with lots of discussion to check they are understanding the meaning. I think aged 6 is about the right age for this but obviously every child is different.

Autieangel · 03/09/2023 08:58

Roald Dahl
Enid blyton
Pamela butchart
