Our ScotMid (pretty much an equivalent) was an utter overpriced dive.

they renovated it and now it’s a slightly cleaner, overpriced dive

You can tell which posters who don't live rurally and who have easy access to more than one shop!

Having lived rurally, and also close to the city centre, I know that if you don’t have access to a wealth of supermarkets, you need to plan, bulk buy, and have a big freezer. No one who lives an hour’s drive from a big store expects to be able to pop into a shop and buy dinner at 6pm every day.

Watchkeys · 03/09/2023 06:46

Yes, food prices have gone up. It's the same for everybody.

What are you hoping for from the thread?

Honestly responses like this are SO rude. Do you talk like this to people you know or just save it for sentences that you type?

Passthecake30 · 03/09/2023 08:47

i have a coop cost cutter near me, I thought the name implies that it would be low cost, which it no way is!

guiltyfeethavegotnorythym · 03/09/2023 08:47

Co-op really getting a pasting here , but they are just not competitive enough .

BlackberryCrumbs · 03/09/2023 08:49

Our local coop is generally expensive but they do have the odd decent offer on. Plus bakery reductions in the evening, I've lost count of the times I've had a tiger bread French stick for 15p or whatever!

NoSquirrels · 03/09/2023 08:53

Their membership/loyalty scheme is good - actual money back to spend in store, which I’m always pleasantly surprised by how it mounts up - and it also gives back to the community local to you- you can help choose which charity or causes benefits and they change regularly. Lots of smaller community groups by us have benefitted.

ioveelephants · 03/09/2023 08:55

I've noticed this a lot more lately! Went in yesterday to grab some ham £3.80 for the basic one!!

Willmafrockfit · 03/09/2023 08:55

our village coop is always very popular, i often pop down in the evenings for reductions - very small car park, just people/locals popping in
i prefer it to tesco express which annoys me as you know it does have cheaper versions in a supermarket, yet doesnt sell them in the express store

portocristo · 03/09/2023 08:56

Thanks for the sensible replies, wow so many arsy people on here , to the person asking what I hope to achieve from the post, well nothing , it was just an observation FGS . it's an eye opener to hear they are more expensive than waitrose. Also I do know how to make a prawn cocktail and may do so today 😁

They've always been expensive. They were the only supermarket for miles where my parents in law lived, it's a big store.
Unless you drove or had access to a car, then you had little choice but to shop there.
How we laughed when Aldi opened a store literally opposite them and pinched all their customers.

MrsJackRackham · 03/09/2023 09:01

Clefable · 03/09/2023 08:01

DH will agree with you there. We've travelled the supermarkets of Scotland trying to find ones that he likes as much but no joy!

Tyrell's are the closest I've found.

pastypirate · 03/09/2023 09:03

Co op are savage and the stores are really grim. We call it 28 days later co op. Hate it.

MrsMoastyToasty · 03/09/2023 09:04

Where my BIL lives , on a Scottish island, its the ONLY supermarket. The quality of fresh food is awful and the store is understaffed.
The alternative is to catch the ferry (no airport on the island) and gi to Oban or Fort William.

essaytwenty · 03/09/2023 09:04

It’s the only supermarket in town so there really isn’t any option but to shop there. They aren’t that expensive if you factor in the cost and inconvenience of a 40+ mile round trip to the nearest Aldi.

They did annoy a lot of people when they put their prices up for the week when there was a big cultural event hosted in the town.

OhNoForever · 03/09/2023 09:06

Our nearest supermarket is a coop and the prices are astounding. I try not to get caught out having to shop there but ive done it once or twice when desperate and really regreted it!

CatherineMaitland · 03/09/2023 09:10

Ours has really good yellow sticker bargains every evening.

TheThingIsYeah · 03/09/2023 09:41

@portocristo

What, you mean you don't fish the north Atlantic for your prawns??

Ignore the sarky comments OP, yes I agree the coop is really expensive. Didn't used to be so bad, but the last time I went in there I just turned on my heels and left, I thought I'd rather go without than give them the satisfaction. Plus I used to find myself queuing for ages as the tills are set up more like a corner shop.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 03/09/2023 09:41

They are all overpriced.
The only ones in our town are co op, tesco express (but that's a petrol station one) or a locally owned supermarket. Fortunately the locally owned one is going into partnership with Morrisons to enable families to do a proper weekly shop.

Icycloud · 03/09/2023 09:44

I went into the local co op the other day it was £2 for one 90ml magnum but I’m putting it up to the fact that no one does their weekly shopping in there so they need to make a profit somehow

Watchkeys · 03/09/2023 10:02

@portocristo

Thanks for your arsey answer to my perfectly reasonable and friendly question.

Tessisme · 03/09/2023 10:50

I don't have one near me, as our area appears to be overrun with fecking Spars, but yes I find them outrageously expensive when I do happen to call into the one near PIL's. I must admit though, I think the quality of their food is pretty decent - just not worth what they're charging. Their pizzas are good and are often on offer - and yes I do know how to make my own pizza before sarky pp shows up again😆 I think some people on here needed an extra hour or two in bed.

x2boys · 03/09/2023 10:52

It always has been there's a Co.op.directly across the road from my mum.and Dads house and my Dad has been complaining about the prices for 40 years😂
Still.potters across several times a day bless him!

54isanopendoor · 03/09/2023 10:52

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 03/09/2023 06:39

So shop somewhere else then.

Co op is a large corner shop - you pay for the convenience.

Some of their offers are great. Most are corner shop prices.

Co op's tend to be the only shop in rural areas. I'm 8miles to the next shop.
They are ridiculously expensive.

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 03/09/2023 10:56

My parents live in a village where the only options are Spar, Co-Op or Tesco Express. There are very, very few online delivery options so most people just have to drive and do a "big shop" in the town 40 minutes away.
