£6.00 for 2 individual prawn cocktails, and they were on offer !!!!

OP posts:
Willmafrockfit · 03/09/2023 07:40

they did an offer on milk a while ago however by the time i realised they soon stopped the offer!

cocksstrideintheevening · 03/09/2023 07:42

There are a couple of large co ops near me, not corner shoos. If you are a member it's on par with Lidl / Aldi and far superior.

I have a Tesco express around the corner and it's £££££ compared to normal tesco.

teenysaladandsniffofarose · 03/09/2023 07:13

Jesus are some people on this thread trying to be difficult arseholes?

The OP is stating a shop is expensive.. which co op is.

No need to tell her to not shop there, I highly doubt she'll be doing her full weekly food shop at the co-op🙄

Agree with you! Some posters are bitter, miserable assholes.

Allthescreens · 03/09/2023 07:46

We live a few doors down for one. I try not to use it, but if ever I do pop in, I try to go around 7-8pm & get yellow label bargains. Things reduced to pennies!

Clefable · 03/09/2023 07:51

It can be v expensive. We shop at Aldi but I sent DH into our local Copie yesterday to get stuff for dinner after our plans changed and he came back indignant about the cost of it!

We used to go there a lot more for top-up shops when we were less organised but when I went through our bank statements I was horrified by how much we were spending there, so we really try limit it now.

Clefable · 03/09/2023 07:53

And yes we live fairly rurally and I do see older people doing their weekly shops in there because our nearest supermarket is a 40-min round trip by car and there are no buses. Our Co-Op is actually really big, it does evening takeaway and stuff too, which is actually a v good deal on pizza nights!

ThomasHardyPerennial · 03/09/2023 07:55

I like going to the larger shops, it's nice to have some different options to my regular shops. The bakery is usually good, and they have a lot of local products (especially in Wales).

bostonchamps · 03/09/2023 07:57

I will forgive Coop anything so long as they never, ever discontinue their finest range salt and vinegar crisps. My oh my.

I’m in Wales and the bakery has really gone downhill recently (as in there isn’t any food in it!), it must just be a local issue then!

DH will agree with you there. We've travelled the supermarkets of Scotland trying to find ones that he likes as much but no joy!

Willmafrockfit · 03/09/2023 08:10

our town's only big shop, bar a burnt down gateway used to be a co op, that was taken over by asda.

QOFE · 03/09/2023 08:15

In a lot of rural areas, co-ops are the only supermarket! Where I live, the co-op actually bought up an empty site to prevent Tesco or Aldi (the two who had expressed an interest) from buying it to build a store. Local people were fuming.

And yes, they're also a bit of a rip off. Waitrose prices for meh food. No wonder they wanted to block any competition!!

purser25 · 03/09/2023 08:19

Some things are more expensive not all. Salmon same price as Tesco far superior. All their fish is quite good. Fresh vegetables similar price. Besides I like the ethics of the Coop. Things that are expensive I get elsewhere. Their breaded ham is better than all other supermarkets and my brother says their luxury pizzas are the best.

Augustus40 · 03/09/2023 08:19

Co op premium 99 Fairtrade tea bags are the best tea though.

allthehops · 03/09/2023 08:21

We have a pretty large co op near us and the prices have always been outrageous compared to tesco. Shop is always empty and surprise surprise it's now closing down.

I just don't understand why they can't be competitive. It's a shame because it's in the town but has a large car park so is very convenient.

gillygeey · 03/09/2023 08:23

I'm always surprised how expensive they are, my local M&S is cheaper

PeachPieStreet · 03/09/2023 08:23

You can tell which posters who don't live rurally and who have easy access to more than one shop!

gillygeey · 03/09/2023 08:24

I hear you OP! They took over our village shop a couple of years ago and their prices were a real shock to everyone.

A few holiday trips we've had in the UK has meant the closest/only shop was a Coop & I always wonder how residents deal with it.

RedRobyn2021 · 03/09/2023 08:24

So expensive, it's a joke.

User13865890 · 03/09/2023 08:28

We often use the Co op on holiday as it is pretty much the only shop in a lot of places

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 03/09/2023 08:29

Yep it’s dearer than waitrose- imo deeply unethical given where they are situated

Soubriquet · 03/09/2023 08:34

We have a co-op and a premier within walking distance and we buy from both. It’s the convenience we pay for.

Greenwitchhorse · 03/09/2023 08:35

Agreed. There is a Co-op near my new house and a Tesco Express. Only good to buy bits and pieces (water, bread, kitchen rolls) when I have run out. I will continue to either order online or make the trip to the nearest Sainsbury's when I need to do the weekly shopping...

borntobequiet · 03/09/2023 08:40

The clue is in the name - it’s a cooperative company, owned by its members for mutual and societal benefit

You can access discounts simply by joining, which makes sense if you regularly shop there, and costs very little. It won’t make it cheap, but will make it competitive. Co-op products are generally good quality.

What is a co-op

Many of us have heard of co-ops, but do you actually know what one is? High street convenience stores are the most well-known type of co-op here in the UK, but they're not the only type of co-op.

CoreopsisEverywhere · 03/09/2023 08:40

They are the only supermarket near us in various directions. They have occasional offers that are very reasonable but most stuff is much more expensive than anywhere else, and the quality of their own brand stuff isn’t that great.

I find it cheaper to drive a few miles further and go to Waitrose.
