Very mundane question (re books for an avid reader - 10yo)

Just going into year 6.

Devours books.

Had just finished The Hunger Games series (has also done the HP series, several times). He's done most of Beast Quest and Sea Quest plus several shelves of non series books.

He's happy to re-read books but has outgrown a lot of our books (Last Kids on Earth / Diary Of a Wimpy Kid)

Any recommendations?

[We hit the library regularly too and I think he's read all he wants to from our local one]

Maybe something by Susan Cooper? Or Tolkien? The Percy Jackson books?

Tulipvase · 01/09/2023 21:01

Are the Philip Pullman books a bit old?

Birdkin · 01/09/2023 21:02

Seconding Percy Jackson.

who let the gods out? Is the start of another fun mythology based series

My 10 yo dd has developed a recent obsession with Agatha Christie books: maybe you could suggest he gives one a go to see what he thinks?

DuranNotSpandeau · 01/09/2023 21:06

The Kane Chronicles are by the same author as Percy Jackson I think, and were loved by DS when he was 10.

Catsnap · 01/09/2023 21:06

the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan, The London Eye Mystery by Siobahn Dowd, the Ruby Redford Series by Lauren Child, the Unadoptables by Hannah Tooke, the Young Bond series by Charlie’s Higson. My Secret War Diary by Flossie Albright - especially if he’s doing Word War 2 this school year. Holes by Louis Sacher

He might like the Cherub books by Robert Muchamore (or the Henderson Boys, which is the WWII prequel). My dc all loved them at around that age, but you might like to have a quick check beforehand, although I don't think they're worse than the HG.
There's also the Alex Rider books too, which are excellent.

Anything by Frank Cottrell-Boyce

The Eagle of the Ninth series

Crunchymum · 01/09/2023 21:17

Lots of suggestions, thank you.

Knew I could count on MN.

Are the Philip Pullman books a bit old?

I actually tried to get him to read Northern Lights recently. (we were away and it rained so he read all his books in the first few days and we found NL in a charity shop... but he didn't fancy it)

I have His Dark Materials trilogy on my bookshelves so I may offer it to him again. Love the books myself - especially The Subtle Knife.

Yes me too, the last one lost me a bit though……

Tulipvase · 01/09/2023 21:26

One of my all time favourites was All creatures great and small. Still love the books.

From memory me too!!

It wasn't as compelling as the first two that's for sure.

Wings of fire series
Anything by Rick Riordan
Alex rider stuff
Artemis Fowl series

LittleOwl153 · 01/09/2023 21:34

My almost 10 similar sounding lad is into Horrible Histories, Horrible Science and Murderous Maths series currently. But he loves a fact over fiction.

Chronicles of Narnia
The Borrowers
Lemony Snicket
Michael Murpurgo - the bigger books

He also tried Alex Roder and Silverfin but didn't take to those.

They're a difficult age group especially if they are good readers as their reading ability often out does their comprehension / topic capabilities.

Catsnap · 01/09/2023 21:42

also have a look at Phil Earle - While the Storm Rages and there’s several others
Tyger by S.F Said

DanceMumTaxi · 01/09/2023 21:44

Ds is the same age and also devours books. How about the Alex Rider series? The boy who biked the world for something different. Also try the Onyeka books.

indignatio · 01/09/2023 21:47

Second so many of these. A joyous time for reading. Am assuming that HP and all the Chronicles of Nania have also been devoured. Hobbit etc. then the realms of discworld await.

WonderingWanda · 01/09/2023 21:49

My ds loved the Murder Most Unladylike series at the same age.

MavisTheMonkey · 01/09/2023 21:59

If he liked the Hunger Games then Suzanne Collins has another set of books called the Oferland Chronicles that my son enjoyed.

My DS's favourite book ever is the Maze Runner -again similar to Hunger Games.

Seconding Percy Jackson and all the Rick Riordan books, plus the Artemis Fowl series.

Also Anthony Horowitz (although maybe a bit too creepy) and also David Baddiel is always a consistent hit.

Thegoldgrind · 01/09/2023 22:01

Tomorrow when the War Began by John Marsden, so so good

HappyHedgehog247 · 01/09/2023 22:03

Orphans of the tide

DanceMumTaxi · 01/09/2023 22:08

Ds also read all of the Hamish books, but this was a couple of years ago.

Newuser75 · 01/09/2023 22:23

I also have a 10 year old who is a prolific reader. He has enjoyed Alex rider, Percy Jackson, Magnus chase, Kane chronicles.

He read the gone series and enjoyed it but did find it gruesome so would depend on the nature of your child.

He has also read the twilight series. He is currently reading the young James Bond series.

One of his most favourite series was Philippa Gregory order of darkness books. He loved these ones!

It's so hard to find books he will enjoy that aren't too scary or whatever for them.

The library don't tend to stock many books that interest him as they say they don't get many kids that age in which is really sad.
