If you work in education do you buy new bag, stationery and clothes etc for the new term?

Just like when you were preparing to go back to school and did the back to school shop where you were dragged around tp buy new uniform etc?

No! Just replace things as and when they wear out. Normally get a new planner though

NegativNancy · 01/09/2023 18:31

One of my worst childhood memories is being dragged around the shops by my mum and grandma to buy school dresses. My bloody grandma made me try things on on the shop floor - it was just so awful!!
I usually buy myself a few new items of clothing for the new term but this year have treated myself to a gorgeous leather satchel instead.

PeachPieStreet · 01/09/2023 18:33

Yep.
I swear to myself every summer I won't, but I always do!
This year I've got a black and neon pink bag from Desigual (always looking for the perfect size, shape & 'carryability' - haven't found it yet), a dress in the sale in the Hobbs outlet and some Bic 4-colour pens, which I have a multitude of but not in this barrel colour. I do enjoy the odd purchase and I think it does help relieve a bit of back-to-school anxiety.

Whippetlovely · 01/09/2023 18:33

No!

StoatofDisarray · 01/09/2023 18:35

No. I work on higher Ed and the university is open for resits, summer schools and preparatory courses all summer, so it's really business as usual. Plus all the prep work for the new academic year of course.

pictoosh · 01/09/2023 18:37

No.

MyrtleSmurf · 01/09/2023 18:39

I have the past two years, last year because it was a new role, this year it's a new school. I haven't bought EVERYTHING new but I did get a new planner (obv) new bag (old one had a rubbish side pocket that kept letting my water bottle fall out) and some bits and bobs of clothing from vinted so not NEW but new to me. Oh and a new lanyard because my previous school had school branded ones and new one doesn't so I took the opportunity to get a fun one!

CatsOnTheChair · 01/09/2023 18:40

Well, I've got new shoes, but that's because the old ones we're on their last legs.
The only bits ive bought for the kids is stuff that is out grown. They still have last year's bags and blazers and ties. DS2 has last year's shirts and PE kit.

NorthWestThree · 01/09/2023 18:46

Lol no, I don't get paid enough for that.

bangbangcauliflower · 01/09/2023 18:52

What @NorthWestThree said...

Confetto · 01/09/2023 18:55

Nope. I know in primary (don't know about secondary) lots of teachers spend an awful lot on their classroom etc but I'm so tight I refuse to even buy myself nice pens for work. Work should provide things like stationery. Teacher TikTok with all the classroom decoration reels (or whatever they're called on TikTok) enrages me because it encourages teachers to spend too much of their own money!

aintnothinbutagstring · 01/09/2023 18:58

Got some new shoes, new pens, new notebook, new bra (!), bought a few dresses off vinted. Will wait to see if school provide us with planners.

Moodwill · 01/09/2023 19:13

Yes! I love the back to school feelings.

spanieleyes · 01/09/2023 19:14

Every year I continue my quest to find the perfect planner!

Not found it yet! But I love trying😁

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 01/09/2023 19:23

I have this year because I am going to a new school with a different dress code so needed to get a few pairs of comfy trousers. I have two planners but one was sent to me from Twinkl so I didn't specially buy it.

I also bought some new pens as I will be marking in a different colour. I have loads of bags already so just bought a fully waterproof one in case I want to bring books home.

I am not allowed to buy any resources for my new school so hopefully my habits will change!!!

Headingforholidays · 01/09/2023 19:28

I have ordered new shoes and bought a fancy planner, but nothing else.

Timeturnerplease · 01/09/2023 19:29

We could barely afford to buy our DD1 her uniform for her first year at school so no, I won’t be getting anything new for teaching.

ButterRoad · 01/09/2023 19:32

No. I’m an academic who’s been putting to bed a major editing project and teaching a summer school, as well as the usual boards, resits, supervising research students etc throughout the summer, and I can categorically confirm I will be facing into the academic year 23/4 wearing my usual uniform of biker boots, culottes, wide-legged trousers and ancient wool coats and jumpers. I do have my eye on a big scarf which has some of the juicier bits of Joyce on it, but that’s it as far as novelty is concerned.

junebirthdaygirl · 01/09/2023 19:35

I like to continue to wear my Summer clothes for at least September..maybe October so no new clothes . But usually grab a few new things then.
Buy new stickers etc for the pupils .

If you don't mind spending, I highly recommend https://www.personalplanner.com/EN/planner You can design your own with the exact pages and layout you need. I have a combo of weekly diary on one page and then notes/to dos etc on the facing page, and then a load of blank lined pages at the back for meeting notes, but you can select lots of different layouts and extra pages, some are teacher specific and others are generic. You can also pick your own cover design and lots of other details. I know I sound like I work for them, but I honestly don't. They're not cheap, but for £25ish I get a lot of joy from feeling organised (even though I'm not!). On a cost per use basis it's basically free!!

This is the layout I have.
To answer the original question, I buy a new planner (!!), and a few bits for my classroom, but I tend to buy clothes/bags etc when I need them, rather than for 'back to school'. I have to spend enough in August for the kids back to school without doing it for me too.

Britpopbaby · 01/09/2023 19:51

@PeachPieStreet I love the Bic 4 colour pens. I bought the ombré barrel ones this year. I recommend Ryman for cute stationery and it’s so mich cheaper than WH Smith in my opinion.

I'm retired and never did. School supplied a desk diary and planning was done on the computer with my own template. I didn't spend my own money on classroom stuff.

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/09/2023 19:58

I sometimes made things for the classroom, like bunting, but it remained mine.

AtomicBlondeRose · 01/09/2023 20:07

I buy myself a lovely planner every year. I could get a cheap one free from work but I use it a lot and love a nice one. I’ve also got a new bag and coat from Vinted, and an insulated cup, water bottle and food flask from Sho. Oh, and a new lunch bag! And some pin badges for my lanyard. I also kit out my desk drawer with paracetamol, hand cream, lip balm, wipes etc.

I like things to be nice!
