What would your ideal holiday let look like?

Hullo!

I am considering opening a small luxe let as a side income.

I think sleeps 2, adults only, no pets.

Very small kitchenette, all luxurious fittings but minimalistic. Also hard wood floors for ease of cleaning.

Thinking of a projector TV that could be moved outside to watch.

Nice coffee machine with decent coffee provided - enough for 3/4 cups per person per day.

Homemade goodies on arrival.

Definitely no hot tub.

But maybe a luxurious outside bath undercover.

Any further requirements.

Thank you in advance.

Decent parking, not just one tiny space that requires contortions even to get a small car in.

A king size bed with a decent mattress and plenty of pillows.

reluctantbrit · 01/09/2023 17:18

A good kettle, decent tea pot and enough mugs.
Enough cutlery and crockery to not use a dishwasher/wash up after each meal.

Comfortable sofa, big enough for two to cuddle while watching TV. Blankets which can be washed after each guest.

Large and good quality towels, tea towels, hand towels, face cloth.

King size or super king size bed. Variety of duvets.
Enough drawer and hanging space in the wardrobe.

Outside bath - hm, depends a lot how it's set up. Not sure I would want to take a bath when there is a chance for anyone to watch. I also would need enough space and privacy to undress/dry off/dress again.
With English weather, I am not sure it would be used often so how would you keep it clean during a stay?

Somewhere easy to store muddy shoes, a porch, side entrance, small set up at the door.

Hanging space for wet coats

If you are at the sea side, I would expect beach towels, somewhere to hang wet swimsuits/wet suit. Ideally camping chairs.

Look into installing an electric/hyprid car charger point where guests can plug in their own cable.

If space, a washing machine and a small amount of washing powder/ tablets.
we stay at a very nice self catering 2-3 times a year and they always leave a welcome tray with biscuits, something for the kids, eggs and milk in the fridge.
big big bath towels that feel better than average small hotel ones
powerful, hot shower
hairdryer

ice cube tray
decent knives
foil, clingfilm etc

If it’s small and minimalistic, location would be everything.

Bumbers · 01/09/2023 20:53

Blackout curtains!

Doyoumind · 01/09/2023 20:55

I'm also not sure about an outdoor bath but if you want to provide nice things outside, a firepit and supply of wood, or a bbq and charcoal. Lanterns or other decorative outdoor lighting.

Basics in the kitchen like tea, good coffee, sugar, milk, oil, salt and pepper, washing up liquid, foil, kitchen roll.

Comfy big bed and cosy blankets and cushions.

Nice handsoap in dispensers. Diffusers.

Bluevelvetsofa · 01/09/2023 20:58

Definitely not a studio type apartment.
King or super king bed, with decent bedding and spare blankets if it’s cold.
Somewhere comfortable to do makeup and a plug nearby for a hairdryer.
Comfortable, good quality seating. So many places look as though they’ve shoved in second hand unwanted furniture.
Some cleaning materials if you expect me to wipe surfaces and bathroom.

Bookist · 01/09/2023 21:04

Really good quality towels and bed linen. Top quality mattress (£1000+) and pillows. Good, powerful mains fed shower. Plenty of space to put your toiletries out in the bathroom. Lots of power points.

Please don't stick brown, pleather sofas in it. And don't have lots of throws and cushions everywhere. Don't buy the artwork from Dunelm. No plastic plants.

Basically, if you market it as being luxe then splash the cash to make sure it is, because people who are used to good quality stuff will know.

SabrinaThwaite · 01/09/2023 21:07

Separate walk in shower and bath.

Big towels and robes.

Superking bed and high quality bedding. Variety of pillows.

Blackout curtains.

Breakfast hamper of local produce available on request.

Fast broadband.

CuteCillian · 01/09/2023 21:08

Walking distance to decent restaurants,or a host who offers lifts.

RedRobin100 · 01/09/2023 21:25

Really cosy fluffy duvets and good pillows

actual good quality furniture

clean. Like proper clean.

Strikeback · 01/09/2023 21:29

Good lighting in the kitchen. Stayed in a place recently, was lovely throughout but I needed a head torch to cook anything!

labamba007 · 01/09/2023 21:32

Super king bed

Plug sockets right next to the bed not across the bloody room

No complicated lighting that I can't figure out where I'll inevitably get stuck on the disco setting

Handmade chocolates

But also a mini bar (extra income for you too)

Information in there about best restaurants, theatres locally etc

Blackout curtains

Variety of different pillows

Decent shampoo, conditioner and body wash in little separate bottles

I'm a lot fussier than I realised 😂

Nagado · 01/09/2023 21:36

Spotlessly clean, a really good shower, a good quality mattress and bedding, a log burner for the winter and outdoor seating in the summer. And maybe a fire pit if you’ll be able to watch films outside.

I wouldn’t use an outside bath because I’d be worried about weirdos being able to see me, and putting up privacy screens means you may as well be inside.

The last place we stayed had a little welcome pack with details of local pubs/shops/takeaways/public transport and a couple of walking guides, which was nice.

topcat2014 · 01/09/2023 21:36

Reading the lists I presume people would be happy to pay 1500 per week..

Ragruggers · 01/09/2023 21:41

Parking, top quality mattress and pillows, wool throws.Winter and summer duvets. Plenty of towels Quality furniture and comfy sofa with cushions, throws.Very clean. Welcome hamper .Fully equipped kitchen top end equipment.must look expensive and tasteful .Good luck with that.

Thinking of a projector TV that could be moved outside to watch. I presume you have a property in mind where you hate the neighbours.

What we ideally look for:

  1. Easy place to park
  2. Bath and shower
  3. Wifi
  4. Sheets provided
  5. Blackout curtains are nice, but I normally take my own anyway.

Anything after that is a bonus. But we do go for the cheap end of the market.

SomethingFun · 01/09/2023 21:55

Having just come back from a small let…

a decent bed, if kingsize won’t fit, at least a nice mattress and duvet
a dishwasher over a washing machine
less holiday themed tat, more storage
if there’s nothing in easy walking distance to do of an evening, netflix over old dvds
bigger fridge with tiny freezer over equal sized fridge and freezer
would’ve loved somewhere to charge the car though that’s not always possible and we were grateful there was a proper parking space
if someone writes in your guestbook something is broken, fix it 😁
I love baths but I don’t think I would use an outdoor one unless we were proper in the arse end of nowhere, miles from any other humans

KohlaParasaurus · 01/09/2023 22:03

Our criteria are a parking space, a ground floor entrance, WiFi, a washing machine, and enough space and suitable flooring downstairs for a couple of bicycles. We can work around most other things.

Georgiepud · 01/09/2023 22:09

Everything I don't have at home. Quality furniture and furnishings

LittleMy77 · 01/09/2023 22:29

Places to put stuff and hooks for hanging. Nothing more annoying than having to constantly step over bags / luggage and nowhere to hang up wet towels!

minimalist to me sounds like no counter space etc- if I stay in a luxe place I want proper coffee machine, decent toaster (not a sub par less than 10 quid Argos special) a fridge that works properly and instruction booklets for stuff, esp if you put in an induction hob. Knives and chopping board are also key, plus the small stuff I expect if I’m paying high end - proper mugs, wine and water glasses, bin bags, cleaning stuff etc

i also want decent Wi-Fi and not tons of ‘quirky’ setting for the hot water etc - we had 3 days away glamping like this and it was bloody miserable!

echoing decent furniture - no leather / pleather or cane

EquallyDetermined · 01/09/2023 22:30

No to an outdoor bath, there is NO WAY I'd use that. Same for an outdoor telly, fast track to pissed off neighbours. As is a firepit if they are close by.

Also if the kitchen is tiny I don't want it cluttered up with coffee machines, I don't really drink it and DH travels everywhere with an aeropress. To be honest I don't really want homemade goodies either, just some teabags, coffee and milk. Yes to a dishwasher and tablets.

Yes to a kingsize bed, decent shower (don't mind if its over the bath) plenty of towels. No to throws on the sofa, I wouldn't trust that they'd been washed.

I accept I'm in the minority here but I am over the moon to find thin curtains, I hate blackout.

Parking on site or very close by. Good wifi. Storage for coats, walking boots etc. Nothing fragranced, no reed diffusers, no fragranced laundry detergent used on bedding etc.

Yes and often pay more. Absolutely no point holidaying anywhere that isn't at least as nice as the home I live in.
