What do you want from a teashop?

I'm at the very early stages of looking at taking over a teashop in a small seaside town. I would interested in finding out what you like or don't like when you visit or any advice from anyone who has done/is running a teashop now. TIA

I’ve got three cafes near me that I take MIL to so not necessarily tea shops but they try to be cute and tea shoppy. All I want is a cup of tea and a toasted tea cake with butter, NONE of them do this. It does my head in, that’s all I want. I always have to get just toast

KathieFerrars · 01/09/2023 18:10

Pots of hot water to top up the tea pot. This is a rarity these days.

Decent cakes not those really massive ones smothered with icing that are obviously a packet mix.

ElFupacabra · 01/09/2023 18:12

Room to move. Honestly this is my priority. I’ve been in so many where you have to squeeze by tables and have peoples arses in your scones as they’re just trying to get by because there’s too many tables.

Leaf tea in a pot - chocolate of blends including a decent decaff
Milk in a jug and a decent amount
Pot of hot water

Choice of scones (plain, fruit, cheese)
Toasted teacakes.

Decent gluten free options (local coeliacs will declare their undying loyalty)
Proper teapots/cups
Warm and cosy, definitely
Properly good coffee
Really nice thick hot chocolate (not the powdered stuff)
Fresh flowers
Local, seasonal produce/ingredients

My dream is to have a proper old fashioned tearooms.
There would be proper homemade scones with jam, cream or cheese scones with cheese & chutneys etc, proper homemade cakes, pots of tea (made with loose tea & strainers) & coffee served in China cups & saucers, sugar lumps, doillies on plates, nice table clothes, afternoon teas etc

The staff to know about allergies.

I'm in Ireland and as another poster upthread mentioned, a lot of independent cafes have really upped their game over here. You need to come over to the West Coast for a visit and you'll see what I mean. Forget Dublin, you won't find inspiration there!

In our local town there are NO chain cafes. They're all Indy's. (We don't have a Boots, Tesco, Costa, Greggs etc. The only chains are an Aldi and a Lidl that are very clean and well run). People are very keen to support local businesses.

My fave local coffee shop has people queuing outside all year round to buy a takeaway coffee or to have one inside.
It's a small place that has a great ambience and plays good music, not too loud. The staff are mostly young and all very cheery and they quickly get to know you and the craic is grand.

It offers a small range of cakes/chocolates (inc. vegan/gluten free) that is made by a separate small bakery, but their USP is that they make the best coffee. The beans (a few different ones) are roasted locally and they buy fresh milk from a local small dairy, not from the supermarket. I never realised how much of a difference that can make to the taste, but it really does. I buy my milk from there too now.

I don't care about China cups or pretty tablecloths. I want high quality beverages and food, above all else.

And ffs dont don't spell 'speciality' as 'specialty'!

Lol, incorrect grammar and spelling is a particular bugbear of mine, so I hope I will get that correct! (And yes, I did read that several times to make sure it had no spelling mistakes!!)

Pretty Chintz old fashioned crockery & soft furnishings , white walls , pine chairs and tables. Pine floor , home made cakes and cookies, table service .

froomeonthebroom · 01/09/2023 18:18

This is the best tearoom I know www.bluebirdtearoomsmalvern.co.uk/

They do a mini afternoon tea for £7.50 and the scones are huge! They do different flavours too, plain, sultana, cranberry and orange, and cheese.

Warm and cosy. I hate it when cafes leave the door open and you’re sitting inside with your coat on

This!

I live in a seaside town. There are a dozen or so tearooms and cafes competing for the trade. I run a holiday home business and know that the budget of many tourists is dwindling. Therefore, visitors who would have paid for a full cream tea are now buying from a supermarket and self-catering. Factor in your low season, business rates, energy costs, staff cost, insurance etc in your business plan. I work as a volunteer helping small traders facing legal disputes. Many pubs and cafes are in big financial trouble due to COVID and cost of living inflation impact. If you are going ahead, you should think about the following: long open hours into the evening, good ordering and recycling policies to reduce your food waste, good WIFI, vegan/ gluten free options, dairy free milk, decent Victorian sponge, renting cafe space to social/ hobby groups, becoming a community hub for local events, marketing to local accommodation suppliers (bring in tourists and you get a discount...that would work as an incentive for me. Discount coupons to tourist attractions/ hotels/ guest houses etc to hand out to their service users). I took my kids into the city the other day for a coffee and cake. We walked in a new cafe and they wanted £4.10 for a slice of cake. I walked right out the door, into Tesco and picked up a whole sponge for us to take home. Eating out has got expensive, and I refuse to pay those prices on principle. I appreciate a cafe will have running costs but there is a ceiling on how much I will pay for a piece of sponge. Best of luck if you do take this on.

Amazing advice, thank you x

I should also have said they use pretty china and you get milk in a proper china jug too.

CharismaticMegafauna · 01/09/2023 18:19

I think my ideal tearoom would have china rather than metal teapots, pretty crockery, strong tea, good coffee, generous portions of homemade cake, homemade scones, no plastic containers of jam, vegan options, plenty of seating, and would stay open past 4pm.

KnittedCardi · 01/09/2023 18:19

To pp who wanted surgar cubes in a bowl....... You really, really , don't want those back. As with peanuts on the bar, there is more "matter" in them than is reasonably acceptable 🤢

Clingfilm · 01/09/2023 18:20

Mine are non food related 😂 Blanket ban on phones/tablets playing TV programmes or games with the sound on.

Staff who aren't afraid to pick people/kids up on their behaviour (noise, running around etc).

Cleanliness, not just sticky tables and chairs, give the skirting and windowsills a once over, puts me off to see a layer of dust and a dead fly.

If you're going to make panini type things please have ventilation, can't stand leaving a cafe honking of grease.

I really want tea and cake now... Best of luck with the venture OP!

enchantedsquirrelwood · 01/09/2023 18:20

sounds obvious, however, the amount of cafés by dog friendly beaches which are not dog friendly

this is so not the case. Everywhere is dog-friendly these days. A USP will be to say no dogs. Remember 1/3 of people don't have dogs, and not everyone wants them around all the time. Even if you have kids you like adults-only spaces on occasion and the same will be true of dog owners.

ActDottie · 01/09/2023 18:21

good coffee including the full range from americano to latte and cappuccino

iced coffees and milkshakes

vegan options not just one dry vegan option for the cake

option buy an afternoon tea package

dog friendly

Curfewgull1 · 01/09/2023 18:26

Fresh local ingredients. No boring cheese paninis with a meagre wilting salad on the side. Nice salad dressings. Value for money, nothing worse than feeling like you’ve been ripped off.

Strugglingtodomybest · 01/09/2023 18:26

I absolutely love tea, hate coffee. My biggest bug bear when I order tea, is if it arrives in a tiny cup, or worse, a tiny pot which only holds one tiny cup full. Don't be stingy with hot water!

AvocadotoastORahouse · 01/09/2023 18:27

they have a conversation table where people sit who are on their own and who would like someone to join them

I love this idea. What a nice thing to do.

RavenT · 01/09/2023 18:30

Tea cake with ample butter.
Not burnt!
Speaking after a going to a posh deli today served with a burnt wholemeal (?!) teacake with just 2 tiny portions of butter. 😕

Daffodilwoman · 01/09/2023 18:32

I’d prefer no dogs ( service dogs excepted)
Quiet. Clean. Lots of choice re seating and tables. A nice view. Good coffee/tea and plenty of it. I don’t mind paying over the odds but when I do I expect to get a big cup. Lots of choice. Lots of cakes and sandwiches.
Plenty of room around the table.
proper cutlery not plastic. China cups and saucers. Sugar cubes in bowls with silver pincers. Staff making coffee how I like it not just one standard setting.
Roomy, clean toilets that are single sex.
Also a door which closes properly so customers are not left freezing.
