What do you want from a teashop?

I'm at the very early stages of looking at taking over a teashop in a small seaside town. I would interested in finding out what you like or don't like when you visit or any advice from anyone who has done/is running a teashop now. TIA

Please! Please! A DECENT size mug for tea. Please.

No scrappy teeny elegant tea cups.

Please decent size hot chocolate mug. Please.

@Lovelynames123 but there's ways of arranging the space so it isn't crowded. The chain coffee shop near me is always full but feels spacious because the way it's arranged means the queue is behind a partition, the seats are arranged so no-one is back to back unless it's a booth and no-one has to squeeze past your chair as the entryway and route through is wide and clear. There's space to take off a rucksack and coat without knocking over someone's drink. Cute independent tea shops always seem to mean I feel like a giant as I squeeze past people to reach the queue then sit down to find the person behind me keeps bumping into the back of me. I just don't go back as I end up feeling flustered and hemmed in.

Aside from the obvious: have lovely food, the main things I would want from a tea room are:

  • tables that are cleared quickly.

Oops, pressed post by mistake, and no "edit " option in the app!

Anyway.

  • tables that are cleared away quickly- it's very annoying when all the free tables have stuff all over them
  • tables that are properly wiped down, and not left feeling sticky and with crumbs /spilt drinks all over them
  • when you wipe over the tables, please also sweep the floor clear of crumbs! Otherwise I end up balancing my bag on my lap or my feet
  • if you have squishy chairs, please clean down the sides of the cushions, it's really minging when it looks all sticky and crumby down there
  • a nice toilet!

A good selection of cakes.
Clean tables and chairs.
Very clean toilets.
If you are doing sandwiches, very good quality bread and interesting fillings.
Good art, maybe by local artists, no twee signs or naff bunting.

And I never, ever, go into a cafe or teashop which allows dogs (except well behaved guide dogs who stay on the floor).

No kids.

I would visit every day if I could find a cafe where there were no screaming children.

I have had to remove my hearing aids before now as the noise is actually painful. I had kids (one NT the other ND) and neither ever screamed their heads off in a cafe/restaurant. Why do they do it and why don't their parents shut them up.

queenofthebongo · 01/09/2023 20:53

I worked in a tea shop for a long time. It depends what you are going for. Proper white tablecloths and tea in teapots and China cups. Proper loose tea for the specialities. Strainers. Proper coffee and a choice of coffee. Proper cake. Scones, jam and cream. Lunches of soup, sandwiches and jacket potatoes. Thick bread. Proper butter. No chips. Salad as a garnish. Ooh takes me back. 😊

MaybeanothertimeNotReally · 01/09/2023 20:55

I also don't want to pay £8 for a cup of tea and a limp scone with just butter & a teaspoon of jam and no butter. I can buy a decent cuppa and a huge scone with all the trimmings from my local M& S cafe for £5. I want to support my local businesses but I don't want to bankrupt myself either.

Northby · 01/09/2023 20:58

Proper hot chocolate made from chocolate not powder. Vegan milks for the unlucky few who are intolerant to dairy. Cakes that aren’t dry!

Paddingtonsmarmlade · 01/09/2023 21:01

Clean, especially the teapots can let a place down

teapot that doesn't leak all over the table

Good food, quality over millions of options

dairy free option for children and knowing your allergens

not feeling rushed out of the place

clean toilets (if your toilet I can see is disgusting what does your kitchen that I can't see look like)

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 01/09/2023 21:02

Extra hot water with the pot of tea. Reasonable prices for the tea. Some sort of savoury granola bar for lunchtime.

strawberriesarenot · 01/09/2023 21:06

No wifi would be glorious.

DeanElderberry · 01/09/2023 21:06

Market town near me has six (at least) places that do teas and lunches, and one of them has opted to be completely gluten-free. They're always busy and do lots of off-sales business - people come from miles away to get a box of freshly baked mixed g-f cakes.

MargaretThursday · 01/09/2023 21:09

Coca cola and smoothies (don't like hot drinks)
Selection of Soup (not just vegetable/tomato)
Nice cakes
Toilet that isn't up a flight of stairs, round the back with no heating in winter.

Floribundaflummery · 01/09/2023 21:11

Log fire and candles in winter, pretty garden in summer. Agree with most posters re food and drink.

DeanElderberry · 01/09/2023 21:13

Apart from cleanliness, civility and some regard for allergies, tea served in pots with a hot water refill available for no extra charge.

AffIt · 01/09/2023 21:14

I'd like a choice of cake sizes.

I don't mind cake - some of it is quite nice - but I don't necessarily want a doorstep-sized slab and the £5 price tag it comes with. A wee bit of cake would be fine.

Also loose-leaf tea in a teapot. I'd forego the massive slab of cake and pay more for the nice tea.

continentallentil · 01/09/2023 21:14

My big issue is buttercream. Wrong on so many levels. What you want is a Victoria sponge with just jam, and proper cream on the side if you want to be fancy, but it’s optional.

Home made quite sharp jam. So many quite posh places have cheap jam thar just tastes of sugar, it’s so disappointing.

Cake that isn’t triple chocolate salted caramel with a flake and whipped cream. The Uk has loads of great flavoured cakes that don’t give you diabetes and a migraine after 3 mouthfuls - but places that serve them are increasingly rare things that use seasonal fruit are good

I also think the UK is short of Danish pastries these days

A place near me does a mini ploughman’s type thing which a cheese scone and soup which is nice. Good soup is generally good at lunchtime.

Given the plethora of diets these days, have something that’s gluten free always, and something vegan, but also packets of nuts so low carbers can come in with their sugar loving mates.

Good builders tea. I like Punjana. People do seem to enjoy fancy teas, diffusers and timers though. Ice for cold drinks in summer.

Decent chairs. Tea shops do have a tendency to have arse destroying chairs.

A loo that you don’t have to practically climb over the seat to shut the door. Tiny lips are also a feature.

Ideally a double front door / porch so it isn’t freezing

People like a fire, so even one of those electric flame ones is quite a good idea in winter

Selling home made bread and nice cards is a good way to have people popping in

Offer a bit of a group deal for meet up groups in quiet slots

People like tea shops that feel like the heart of the community I think so a book swap shelf, locally made cards and art on the walls you can buy and maybe a mini notice board are good

I love how much MN has to say about tea shops..

Howtosolveit · 01/09/2023 21:16

Yy to mismatched china and cosy armchairs. I also love nothing more than a teashop with a battered old chesterfield. Good coffee in big cups and tea in a pot. Personally I would also love a healthier option than the usual cakes and scones. Doesn't have to be fancy, could be e.g. granola squares or fresh fruit. I do love cakes and scones, though, especially big homemade ones you can see under those glass dome things. All of those things would draw me in, but once in, the things I really like are friendly staff and the feeling that it's ok to linger. I love a drawn out afternoon in a tea shop and am prepared to spend for the privilege! Good luck OP :)

Racingadmin · 01/09/2023 21:23

Drinks that are properly hot

Hate getting tea coffee or hot chocolate that I can gulp down as soon as it's served

RinklyRomaine · 01/09/2023 21:39

Scones fresh daily at a minimum with real jam and clotted cream. Not stingy. Saving pennies on scone size really annoys me

Real buttercream not that synthetic sickly stuff

Plenty of cushions

Small, plainer items for kids and dieters; fresher savoury options to allow room for cake

No chunks of raw red onion all over anything savoury. I don't wish to honk all afternoon, thank you

Fruit / spice options. Not everything has to be salted caramel or chocolate or hand nibbled pistachio crumbs in semi sweet yak yoghurt

Proper decent coffee

All the rest is fine!

What vegan fillings would you suggest?

  • toasties with mashed cheesy spiced potato (with onions, jalapeños, cayenne, curry powder and grated vegan cheese) - I made a non vegan version of these today with ciabatta and it was amazing.
  • falafel, pickles, red onions and hummous
  • vegan sausages, cucumber, dijon mustard and vegan mayo
  • a vegan egg mayo with scrambled turmeric soft tofu and cress
  • crushed spiced chickpeas, tahini sauce, salad
