How have they only just now decided to close the buildings until they are safe? Has someone been injured?

They probably daren't release it due to the uproar it will cause. Where are all these children going to be educated? What a (completely avoidable shit show of a government as usual) nightmare

toomuchlaundry · 31/08/2023 17:22

Will schools be expected to pay for repairs/rebuild from their normal capital budgets?

Jntprcsbllyngcnt · 31/08/2023 17:24

Presumably they've already told the schools involved that they can't open? I mean, I'm not going to be told on Tuesday that my DC can't go back to school on Wednesday, am I? Or am I?! Starting to panic here.

Apparently they will be paying for alternative accommodation and any transport costs as well

cathyj77 · 31/08/2023 17:25

@Jntprcsbllyngcnt That was my assumption too - that we'd know already - but perhaps not. I'm sure all schools affected will leak soon...

It's the LAs responsibility to ensure all compulsory age children receive suitable full time education. I suggest any schools remind them of this (section 19 of the education act 1996). Not that they are any better funded but schools can't exactly afford it either can they.

JanglyBeads · 31/08/2023 17:36

No they won't @midgemadgemodge , according to the NEU. They're making it sound like they are though.

JanglyBeads · 31/08/2023 17:36

Beg your pardon that was what you meant @midgemadgemodge

Danikm151 · 31/08/2023 17:40

Schools are being expected to foot the bill of relocation and travel costs if needed too!
out of already stretched budgets!

lafaraona · 31/08/2023 17:43

This country doesn´t give a shit about kids education. The governement and the schools better find an alternative to online "schooling". Our school hasnt had a straight normal term since fucking covid. If it was not covid, it was a heating problem, or strikes... now its the concrete? Are they fucking serious. Unbelievable dereliction of duty.

WhiteFire · 31/08/2023 17:45

It has been a ticking time bomb since the 1950's, a colleague was informed today that her daughter who was due to start yr 7 next Tuesday will be delayed a week. It seems that some years will be online for the start at least

Thankfully my DC's school is post 2000 so won't be affected.

Positive41 · 31/08/2023 17:46

I welcome the inspections and closures if need be whilst they sort this out. Imagine if action isn't taken and a child or children are hurt or worse still. I agree they will need to pull their finger out and find replacement classrooms.

LondonLovie · 31/08/2023 17:47

You should read about how bad it is in some hospitals too. And we haven't even found it all yet

They could have been taking action since 2018 rather than a panic response 6 years later

You think the govt are doing the inspections? No, they told schools and councils to do it.

And then were baffled when schools and councils didn't have the time or resources to complete their survey asking schools and councils whether they'd found any.

In June this year the govt set up a call centre to phone schools to ask them why they hadn't done the survey. Presumably because they have no money, time or staff.

So the schools that are being closed are the ones that the govt knows about.

DfE runs call centre as RAAC survey snub 'baffles' ministers

But Barran can't say whether addressing problems with concrete material will delay other rebuilds

Taylorscat · 31/08/2023 17:56

I just did a search on my DD’s secondary and found a govt report where it was mentioned some of the ‘failed’ RAAC had been replaced last year in her school. It did have a few classrooms refurbished last year so let’s hope they sorted it , hopefully they’ll prioritise y11 anyway 😬. I knew nothing about this material and public buildings. Just seen Dan Hewitt at ITV flagging that it could be an issue in some social housing as well.

Charmatt · 31/08/2023 17:57

The government completed an assessment of which schools were affected last year. We were all asked to fill in a questionnaire to determine them. They've known about the issue for far longer but have ignored it. Typical Tory shit show of not funding public services ignoring them and then pretending it's not their fault!

Taylorscat · 31/08/2023 17:58

Although I’m slightly worried they may have just refurbished the worst and the other blocks still have it. I suppose at least it sounds like they know it’s there …

noblegiraffe · 31/08/2023 17:59

They didn't! They were still asking schools this June.

Taylorscat · 31/08/2023 17:59

It’s a massive scandal isn’t it. I didn’t think I could be shocked by this Govt any more !!

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 31/08/2023 18:05

I'm a bit concerned - our school has been given the government funding to rebuild as such bad condition and planning is currently in. I keep refreshing my emails as I'm expecting something telling me they are shutting part of the building.

toomuchlaundry · 31/08/2023 18:08

One of our local schools is in a rebuild programme because it is so bad, wonder if this will get delayed because of these other schools

That's totally not what the BBC are reporting, revenue costs are to come from school budgets
