How much have you spent on school uniform?

Here’s mine, ~£300 for 1 in lower secondary school. Probably missed a few things off and will need to top up during the year.

Coat £30 (Vinted)
Shoes £35
1 x PE kit (top, shorts, fleece) £45 (branded)
2 x trousers £34
3 x polos £36 (branded)
2 x sweatshirts £34 (branded)
5 x socks £7

Rucksack £25
Stationery £20
Calculator £15 (specific one needed)
Water bottle £10

Couldn’t have got much of this cheaper unless second hand and even then it costs. Made me think of people with 2-3+ children. Must really add up in 1 go over the summer!

Why are people spending so much? I got all bar 1 cardigan (dd won't wear jumpers only cardigans) and shoes from the nearly new sale for a £5 donation.

You do realise if nobody bought anything new there would be nothing donated to school for you to buy with a fiver?

VenusClapTrap · 31/08/2023 15:31

Nearky £1K. Private school. Eldest moving up to the Senior school which has a different uniform. Youngest starting there in year 7 and needing whole kit and caboodle. Nothing suitable for handing down. Thought we’d got away without new shoes for youngest but he seems to have grown in the fortnight since he tried them on, and is claiming they’re now too small. I suspect though that he’s just decided they look a bit tired next to the rest of his shiny new uniform.

Interesting to see the range.

Seems like the transition years are especially costly and then depends on any decent hand me downs from siblings; how much branded stuff is needed and whether there are significant growth spurts and ‘non-typical’ sizes where second hand or cheaper alternatives aren’t available.

Always have to get a photo on first day of term :)

It's the primary stuff that is cheaper for us, secondary school is expensive because they demand we go through a school supplier.
The only branded thing we need for primary school is jumpers. They are due to become an academy in January so I think next year will change.

bluechameleon · 31/08/2023 19:05

Not as much as I'd feared - both DCs trousers and tops still fit. We got them one pack of new tops each just so they have clean/unchewed ones for school photos, which are in September. DS1 needed new jumpers, but he doesn't like the branded school sweatshirts, so has the cheaper unbranded v necks. Both needed new school shoes and one needed new PE trainers. Both have coats that still fit. So we got off relatively lightly.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 31/08/2023 19:09

Nothing! Dc1 no longer in school and dc2 still fits in everything. They’re going into year 11, if it can all last until June I’d be thrilled but I’m not convinced it will!!

pudseypie · 31/08/2023 19:14

£430.. DS moving up to new school for year 7 transition so had to start from scratch with it all. A lot of it has the school logo on. And £47 just for a rugby top!!

MurderOnTheChatExpress · 31/08/2023 22:40

It’s nuts isn’t it, £47 for a rugby top! I wonder why they can’t just have iron-on logos instead of dictating expensive embroidery stuff. Be much quicker too as the place I had to order branded stuff from seemed to have order deadlines of early August to get it for the start of term.

2 dc -
DS 15 (year 11) £155
new blazer - 38 - school shop
new tie - 6 - school shop
6 x shirts - 30 - matalan
shoes - 50 - kickers from Amazon
Top up stationary- 6 - WHSmith
back pack - 15 - footlocker

only brought him new trousers in may so they are absolutely fine and thankfully still fit. I didn’t want to get him new blazer& tie for his last year but both were falling apart. And I can use tie as backup for dd when she goes n3xt year.

dd10 - year 6 - £80
shoes - £33 - M&S
2 skirts - £15 - very
2 polos - £3 - asda
socks - £7 - very
Pe top x 2 - £11 - M&S
lunchbox - £11 - smiggle

She still has pinafores perfectly fine from last year, will have to buy tights in a few months as she won’t wear trousers, she didn’t wanna change her backpack which suits me fine and she has so much stationary she could provide smiggle with stuff..

Bemyclementine · 31/08/2023 23:01

2 DC in primary - yrs 2 and 4.

2 x school logo jumpers, 2 x logo polo's- £46
4 x M& S polo's £14.

That's it. So far. Will need shoes which we'll get Saturday. Going to go through trousers and shorts tomorrow. Seem to have loads.

Won't buy winter coats yet.

cupan · 31/08/2023 23:02

€0. Yay for non uniform schools! They can wear what they like

Boomboom22 · 31/08/2023 23:02

600 ish. At least 450 on the year 7. About 80 on reception. Plus other bags etc, socks, new polos for the year 6. Who will probably go to a different secondary so prob the same next year!

tedybear · 31/08/2023 23:03

My little one just going in to p2:

Shoes £45
Bag/lunch box set £15
Water bottle £10
Polo shirts x 4 £8
2 x Pinafores £28
2 x Skirts £25
Indoor shoes £8
3 x frill socks £4

Shirts, pe shorts, knee high socks and branded school fleece still fit from last year.
Still need to get a cardigan £10ish and new tights £5 also another shirt as it got stained on the collar this week so that’s another £6.

I think I'll be about £160ish in total, well more £200+ if you include winter coat for school.

Got off lightly with the bag this year as I was dreading a £60+ spend on Smiggle but she loved a stitch one in Primark 😃 Got the Lelli Kelly shoes reduced too they are usually around £60.

AutumnMistletoe · 31/08/2023 23:17

I have 1 DS and 2 DD. I save money by handing them down to each other. I do get them new things as well if really needed. I'm a single mum who works full time and still struggling financially.
