Here’s mine, ~£300 for 1 in lower secondary school. Probably missed a few things off and will need to top up during the year.

Coat £30 (Vinted)
Shoes £35
1 x PE kit (top, shorts, fleece) £45 (branded)
2 x trousers £34
3 x polos £36 (branded)
2 x sweatshirts £34 (branded)
5 x socks £7

Rucksack £25
Stationery £20
Calculator £15 (specific one needed)
Water bottle £10

Couldn’t have got much of this cheaper unless second hand and even then it costs. Made me think of people with 2-3+ children. Must really add up in 1 go over the summer!

Total 140 for two children. One primary. One secondary.

About £30 per child on clothes (Tesco's)

£30 new school bag for one.

£50 new shoes for one

They didn't need anything else.

All schools in our area wear uniforms that can be bought from supermarkets.

Sadless · 30/08/2023 18:20

Year 11 son

2 jumpers and 2 pants £99
4 shirts from asda £12

Nothing! No uniform thank god. I always get him winter shoes and jacket around this time but they'll be worn everyday, not just for school!

Lots of reasons. Maybe because not everyone wants second hand stuff.....or their kids are specific about what they’ll wear for various reasons....or the nearly new stuff wasn’t in the correct size....or was very worn looking....or like our school doesn’t even have a nearly new sale. They take donations and pass those onto specific children, there is no sale.

@LittleBearPad our local catholic state school has blazers in that price category (summer dresses are £68….).
Our (private) school blazers are £45

That’s shocking! The catholic school, I mean. Your private one sounds pretty good - ours were £90

Vitriolinsanity · 30/08/2023 18:43

Sixth form

1 suit with 2 trousers £150
5 shirts £25
Clarks shoes £70

Personal best time in Clarks. Measured, try on and out in 12 minutes.

New school with a lot of sports kit. Next year won’t be nearly so bad.

DS (same school) was £150 mainly due to shoes/trainers.

Because teenage boys are hard on their clothes and very few make it as far as a second hand shop.

My DS has grown 3" over the summer holidays. His feet have grown a size and a half. Clarks black leather lace ups are £50. He's in adult size trainers so £38 was the least expensive, comfortable pair.

I make his clothes last as long as possible, mending, darning, letting them down, but there's no escaping the basic requirement for uniform, sports kit and shoes.

Thats impressive. I’ve spent many miserable hours in Clark’s over the years! 😅

TheFormidableMrsC · 30/08/2023 18:55

Around £200 because he's had a massive growth spurt so all the uniform I bought for year 7 no longer fits. He's going into year 8. So new everything except for tie, shirts that I bought two sizes too big at the beginning of the year and PE shorts.

Last year DS would have looked pretty daft walking into a new secondary school with only a couple of garments on!

This year is a cheap year, his uniform still fits. His shoes needed changing in the summer term. DS2 just needs a couple of polo shirts. He's still reasonably stocked as DS1 had previously been in the same year of the same school. DS1's school bag has been upgraded; he started with a plain, unbranded bag to do the job until he knew what he wanted, but DS2 wants to use that one now as he's had his old one a few years.

Next year will be dearer as DS1 will have grown and we'll need a second stock of secondary uniform for DS2 anyway, so some will pass down, and some new needs buying and the primary uniform will be totally redundant. Worse case, DS2 grows a lot this year and out-groes DS1's stock and both will need re-kitting.

I'm fortunate that DS1 goes to a pragmatic school that allows cheaper, generic uniform. DS1 is dyspraxic and needs lots of spares.

I don't buy new and replace for the sake of it and try to get reasonable life from uniform, but some years of transitions or big growth spurts do cost £££. I'm happy to be in a cheap lull this time and hoping no major y6 growth spurts

Lovelynames123 · 30/08/2023 19:16

Eldest off to secondary but school actually provides a blazer, tie and basic pe kit so only spent about £100 on other necessary kit.

Shoes £45
Stationery £20
Bag £17

Youngest doesn't really need anything but shoes, which will be some cheap ankle boots that she favours despite looking in Clarks, Schuh etc!

Fizbosshoes · 30/08/2023 19:19

Sirzy · 30/08/2023 15:59

One going into year 9.

two new pairs of Trousers £16
few bits of stationary less than £5

everything else from last year is fine

I have one going into year 9 too and have so far spent £74 on new blazer, 1 pe tshirt and 1 pair of shorts.

I bought new school shoes and trainers in about May, and he had new trousers last term because of a growth spurt. Will test shirts this week as we haven't replaced those since year 7

I don't think any bags or water bottles need replacing

DD is going into year 13 and I think only needs a pair of shoes

Ds needed a new blazer and PE kit. I haven't seen any available in his size 2nd hand.
I buy and sell school uniform but it's fairly pot luck what's available. His previous blazer won't be sellable because it has a hole in it and paint stains

Anxioys · 30/08/2023 19:24

Y7 - 600 quid. Sweet Jesus.

TheClitterati · 30/08/2023 19:25

I've 2 dds at high school and for the first year ever I've not had to buy any uniform.

Incredible really.

Dd2 will probably need some new shoes at some point but not right now.

WhiteFire · 30/08/2023 19:27

Thankfully not too bad, youngest (g) going into year 7 and middle one (b) year 11.

Thankfully I have an older one (g) so some stuff can be hand me downs. New jumper for each of them (yr 11 I have a different one) but the spares are hand-me downs. Youngest needed blazer, pe trousers (dd1 didn't want them) and new tie.

Both had new shirts (Tesco 25% off) and dd2 has hand me down trousers.

We're fortunate that very little is branded. All needed new shoes and bags, but that is just a given really. I don't buy new just because it is a new year.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 30/08/2023 19:30

About £400.
5 trousers , polo shirts and jumpers each for 2 primary age dc.
4 polo shirts, skirts, leggings, cardigans, basic PE kit for dd (year 7 but special school so simple uniform)
5 shirts each for secondary age dc x3 plus new trousers for ds, dds are fine in the skirts they already have.

Shoes for all 6, PE trainers for 1

Luckily older dc didn't need new blazers or PE kits this year. Last year I had one starting secondary from scratch, and older ds needed new everything as he had a massive growth spurt, plus one extra child in secondary so it was ridiculously expensive.

LER83 · 30/08/2023 20:06

Too much!! Dd starting in yr 7, ds going into yr 9. Spent over £100 alone on 2x blazers, 2x ties, 1x pe top and 1x pe shorts! Then had to order my dd the school skirts with school logo that were £22 each!! So that was about £175+ just on logoed stuff! (Thank god ds was able to pass down a pe kit and lower school ties to dd!). God knows how much more was spent on shirts, trousers, shoes, bags, stationary, socks etc! Easily £350/400 in total! Youngest ds is home educated so £0 spent there at least!

EsmeeMerlin · 30/08/2023 20:13

Just over £200 on two children's uniform going into year 1 and 5. £100 on new school shoes and trainers. £60 on logo school uniform and then £50 on trousers, lunch bags etc.

hby9628 · 30/08/2023 20:18

Going into Y8
Schools shoes £90 (managed to find a 10% discount code fortunately). She's in size 7 so classed as adult now but hopeful they will last her 12 months.
Skirt £3 (second hand)
Shirts £0 gifted second hand
Stationery approx £20

Going into Y4
Shoes £28
Stationery £13
Second hand uniform £0

Not too hideous.

JumpingQueen · 30/08/2023 20:18
