Whole milk tastes watery now...

Has anyone else noticed?
I just had really disappointing cereal that tasted like semi skimmed milk was used.

How weird - I was thinking the same recently- sat drinking my hot chocolate, wondering if I had used the semi skimmed milk that we have in the fridge by accident. I hadn’t, though.

BBno4 · 30/08/2023 10:00

You can tell the differnce because for some reason whole milk tastes colder and clings to the cereal.

Even with tea, before I would use a splash, now I could pour it.

I suppose it’s to be expected to start noticing a decline in quality when the costs associated with rearing dairy cows continue to climb. You think they’re out there eating the finest feed and living their best lives whilst being hooked up to those milking machines all day long?

I like the tesco finest milk however it only comes in 1 pint bottles . It has the old fashioned cream on the top like the bottles of milk from the milkman .

minipie · 30/08/2023 10:18

Hmm interesting, I thought my coffee seemed watery this morning using new whole milk.

softsweets · 30/08/2023 10:18

How funny, I'm the opposite - SS milk tastes too creamy at the moment, I'm not sure if my milkman's cows are producing creamier milk or it's a hangover of the possible Covid I had a couple of weeks ago.

I use oat milk, it’s always lovely.

Do you happen to have any farms/farm shops in travelling distance that might sell local milk? Some sell raw milk too. I occasionally travel to one about an hours round trip selling local milk, infinitely better.

They are milked twice a day, not 'all day long'.

I get the Duchy organic milk from Waitrose which is unhomogenised like milk should be

FuckYouEzekiel · 30/08/2023 10:36

Oat milk is lovely. Cows are beautiful creatures who suffer for a cup of tea. I wouldn't want a famer putting his arm up my arse and removing my calf.

Papillon23 · 30/08/2023 10:39

I sometimes get gold top (or gold smooth) if they are in the yellow sticker section. Those are definitely still lovely and creamy!

Different farms have different systems. Some farms milk twice a day. Some farms have robot systems where the cows can go to be milked when they choose. Some cows are housed all year long. Some cows go out to the grass in the middle part of the year. If you want creamier milk buy milk from Jersey cows

Cowlover89 · 30/08/2023 10:47

I haven't noticed. Still tastes the same

I'd rather have cows milk in my tea

I buy local organic milk from cows that choose their own milking schedule. If there has been a lot of rain then the milk naturally contains more water. In late Spring the milk is noticeably creamier as the new grass growth comes through. As most of Northern Europe has had a soggy summer it follows that milk will taste thinner.

User1659463 · 30/08/2023 10:51

A lot of oat milk is considered ultra processed

I doubt she does. Pretty sure supermarkets don't sell unpasteurised milk.
Really annoys me that milk is pretty much ask homogenised these days... and don't get me started on that cravendale filtered muck.
